White House says prez is NOT considering firing Mueller
(National Sentinel) Executive Branch: The White House is pushing back against reports on Tuesday that President Donald J. Trump was considering firing independent counsel Robert Mueller, which he has the constitutional authority to do.
The pushback came after long-time Trump friend Chris Ruddy, CEO of Newsmax Media, claimed in an interview with PBS that the president was considering axing Mueller, a former FBI director who is close with James Comey, whom the president fired. Mueller was appointed by the Justice Department to look into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election, but many Trump supporters fear he will expand his investigation in an attempt to ensnare someone in the current administration.
“I think he’s considering perhaps terminating the special counsel,” Ruddy said. “I think he’s weighing that option. I think it’s pretty clear by what one of his lawyers said on television recently.”
“I personally think it would be a very significant mistake, even though I don’t think there’s a justification,” he added, as reported by The Daily Caller.
Ruddy also claimed the president interviewed Mueller for FBI director days before he was appointed to be special counsel: “The president did talk with him in the days before he was named special counsel. I think there’s a conflict there.”
The White House denied all.
“Mr. Ruddy never spoke to the President regarding this issue. With respect to this subject, only the President or his attorneys are authorized to comment,” spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters.
“Chris speaks for himself,” a second senior administration official told The Daily Caller. “He did not meet or speak with POTUS today.”
Ruddy would not comment to The Daily Caller.
