New Research Finds Cancer Risk Elevated in Old Gold Mining Towns

Gold has brought prosperity to many and has created copious amounts of wealth. The mining, extraction and sale of gold has given rise to great nations and created many fortunes. Sadly, there is a darker side to gold, as new research has found that living near an old gold mine could be detrimental to your health.

New research published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology from the University of Melbourne has revealed that exposure to arsenic that is commonly found in mine waste dramatically increased the risk of cancer for residents living in gold field regions.

The study looked at 20 years of data from the Victorian Cancer Registry (Australia) and a measure of soil arsenic from the University of Ballarat and GeoScience Victoria. The paper found that between 1984 and 2003 there was an increase in cancer risk.

The author, Dr. Pearce, said that “because arsenic is naturally occurring where gold mineralization occurs, when people mine they bring up the gold ore containing arsenic and it is concentrated in large dumps of waste.”

Dr. Pearce then went on to say that “people most at risk of exposure were children playing in mine waste dumps and gardeners who could stir up dust in the soil”.

Dr. Pearce also said the Government should “fund soil and water testing for residents so they could determine their exposure levels and suggested parents reduce children’s exposure to high-risk areas and that gardeners bring in clean topsoil for vegetable plots”.

The biggest question we need to ask ourselves is how much gold mining waste has been dumped near residential areas around the world without the knowledge of residents, and what levels of testing for arsenic and other cancer-causing elements has occurred and been documented?
