America Just Gave Kevin Spacey a Sobering Taste of His Post-#MeToo Reality
(ANTIMEDIA) — The #MeToo movement launched nearly a year ago to fight back against sexual harassment in Hollywood and beyond continues to have ramifications.
The once beloved actor Kevin Spacey, who was accused of sexual harassment against both teenage boys and men — and drew additional backlash for responding to the first allegation by coming out as a gay man — just experienced his lowest grossing film of all time. The Hollywood Reporter noted that the film opened in eight theaters across the country this weekend and grossed only $126 Friday and $162 for a total of $287.
The outlet reported:
“For the full weekend, Billionaire Boys Club looks to have earned just $618 from a total of 11 theaters (the additional locations didn’t report any grosses on Friday and Saturday).
Though the numbers make more sense considering the small number of theaters involved, the Hollywood Reporter explained just how bad the box office figures actually are:
“Put another way, that’s a per location average of roughly $56 for the weekend. If going by the average ticket price to date of $9.27, that means about six people showed up in each cinema on average. And it’s by far the worst showing [of] Spacey’s career.”
The film was available last month on VOD (Video on Demand), and though the outlet acknowledges that “films released there aren’t generally big draws at the box office,” they clarify that “Billionaire Boys Club is faring particularly poorly.”
House of Cards, Kevin Spacey’s hit Netflix show that launched the streaming outlet’s immense success with original programming, also took a hit following the allegations against the actor. He was cut from the show’s sixth and final season entirely.
Netflix further asserted it would no longer work with the actor on any projects, shelving a biopic on author Gore Vidal he was set to star in.
