Social breakdown: Philly residents throw objects at, shove, physically confront officers responding to police ambush (Video)
By Jon Dougherty
(NationalSentinel) As Philadelphia police officers responded to an ambush of their fellow officers Wednesday afternoon, residents of the City of Brotherly Love pelted some of them with objects, in what has become the latest sign of social breakdown and resistance to authority in another major American city.
Officers under fire, meanwhile, were struggling to gain control of the situation involving an armed suspect, even as some Philly residents were also seen impeding officers, confronting them in an aggressive manner, and shoving them.
Police officers came under fire as they attempted to serve an arrest warrant at a home in Philly’s Nicetown neighborhood. When it all over, six cops were wounded by a single suspect — Maurice Hill, 36, now in custody — who, reports said, was likely wanted for drug-related offenses.
Philly PD finally managed to subdue the suspect after calling in SWAT, but only after a lengthy showdown between officers and the shooter.
Police sources identified the shooter in a standoff at a Nicetown apartment building that left six police officers injured as Maurice Hill, 36 — a Philadelphia man with a lengthy history of gun convictions and of resisting attempts to bring him to justice. https://t.co/pWxf7kAuGf

Philadelphia police had been fired upon when serving an arrest warrant at a home in the city’s Nicetown neighborhood. Up to 6 officers were shot by a single individual, who may have been wanted for drug-related crimes.
A lengthy showdown ensued between Philadelphia police and the shooter. The authorities were ultimately able to bring the suspect into custody after calling in a SWAT team.
Watch:
It’s unclear why residents were upset with officers who were responding to a shootout, though there have been problems between police and residents in Philadelphia for several years.

Still, it’s becoming obvious to many social observers that portions of our major cities are steadily becoming “no-go zones” for police and other authorities as they seek to bring justice and order to increasingly restive — and distrustful — communities.
CBS Philadelphia reported:
At least six Philadelphia police officers were shot during a gun battle in Philadelphia’s Nicetown-Tioga section and rushed to the hospital on Wednesday afternoon, authorities say. Two officers and three others who were trapped inside the home with the shooter were safely evacuated several hours after the standoff began. The gunman surrendered just after midnight.
All six officers wounded in the shooting have been released from the hospital. Another officer injured in a car crash on the way to the scene still remains hospitalized.
“It’s nothing short of a miracle that we don’t have multiple officers killed today,” Police Commissioner Richard Ross said.
