(ANTIMEDIA) — Two days ago Hurricane Harvey was a tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico. On Friday night, it strengthened to a Category 4 storm, with sustained with of 130 mph, only hours before making landfall in Texas. Harvey is the first major hurricane to hit the United States in 12 years.
Hurricane Harvey is the first Category 4 storm to hit Texas since Hurricane Carla in 1961.
Harvey made landfall in Texas as a Category 4 hurricane around 11pm EST.
The effects of the hurricane will hover over the area for several days, with rainfall amounts estimated to be as high as 40 inches in some areas through next week. Hurricane force winds are projected to stick around through the weekend and life-threatening storm surge waters could reach up to 13 feet above ground level in some areas overnight Friday into Saturday.
