Their turn: Top DEM threatens govt. shutdown if illegal alien DACA recipients aren’t given PATH to citizenship

(National SentinelThreat: During President Obama’s tenure, Democrats once chastised Republicans for allegedly being responsible for a government shutdown over their refusal to agree to spending increases.

GOP lawmakers were widely criticized by Democrats and the establishment media over the 16-day shutdown, receiving the lion’s share of the blame.

Now, a top Democrat is threatening another government closure if an immigration reform bill lawmakers are debating does not contain a provision to legalize some 800,000-1 million illegal aliens protected from deportation under an Obama-era executive order.

Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., told ABC News‘ “This Week” on Sunday, “I, for one, will not vote on government funding until we get a deal for DACA,” the acronym for the Obama program, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.

In September, President Donald J. Trump rescinded the order and gave Congress six months to fix it.

Last week, a federal court in the U.S. Ninth District issued a temporary order barring Trump’s rescinding order from taking effect, but that decision is widely expected to be overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court at some point.

Here is Lewis on yesterday’s This Week program:

DACA was initiated via executive order by Obama in June 2012. At the time it was heavily criticized by Republicans and a number of state attorneys general as an unconstitutional move by the Executive Branch to unilaterally change immigration law.

But several Democrat-run states sued the administration over its lifting of DACA, and last week, U.S. District Judge William Alsup in San Francisco, part of the oft-overturned Ninth Circuit, blocked the order.

A recently leaked memo from the Democratic Party indicates that party strategy moving forward is to ensure that as many illegal aliens as possible receive citizenship because it is believed most of them will vote for Democratic candidates.

The memo, co-written by former Clinton communications director Jennifer Palmieri, was distributed to allies who are calling on congressional Democrats to “refuse to offer any votes for Republican spending bills that do not offer a fix for Dreamers and instead appropriate funds to deport them.”

“The fight to protect Dreamers is not only a moral imperative, it is also a critical component of the Democratic Party’s future electoral success,” reads Palmieri’s memo.
