During Trump’s campaign in 2015 and 2016, he frequently promised to build a “big, beautiful wall” along the southwest border with Mexico as a means of shoring up border security, stopping illegal immigration and drug smuggling.

Many were quick to blame Trump for signing the legislation but the president said before he affixed he signature that the bill contains substantial funding increases for the U.S. military, which is vital to the nation’s security.

Military readiness has suffered under a decade’s worth of continuing resolutions, mostly during the Obama administration, as key weapons development programs were pushed back due to unreliable funding.

Trump also pledged on Friday that he would never again sign a massive spending bill “that nobody’s even read.”
