As reported by the local Citizen Times, in addition to the graffiti, which was painted across the front of the building, the vandal also damaged the on-site security camera, broke the windows out of a lodge van, and removed the meeting site’s U.S. flag, then “ran it back up upside down.”

The incident occurred around 4 a.m., according to police spokesperson Christina Hallingse, the paper reported.

A lone white male suspect was caught on security camera despite his efforts to destroy it. Local police now have the video.

“I pulled up here this morning and was just taken aback,” Rondell Lance, a retired police officer and president of the lodge told the paper. “I wondered who would do this and why would they do this to our lodge?”

Officials estimate about $5,000 worth of damage was done to the property.

“I’m thinking it’s more of an ANTIFA or anti-government-type person rather than somebody that’s involved with Black Lives Matter,” said Lance. “It’s someone just trying to keep the community upset and trying to stir up strife in the community.”

He explained that he doesn’t believe it the damage was done by a Black Lives Matter supporter because he maintains ties with the leader of a local BLM chapter and the Asheville NAACP.

The police department has faced a backlash in recent weeks following an incident involving a former officer.

Chris Hickman was caught on camera in August violently arresting a man named Johnnie Jermaine Rush. He resigned in January but has been charged with felony assault by strangulation, misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury and misdemeanor communicating threats last week.

Lance, along with several current Asheville PD officers, have condemned what they say on the video of Rush’s arrest.

“From our standpoint, we just hope there’s one guy responsible,” Lance said regarding the damage done to the FOP building and vehicle.

“We think it’s just one person for whatever reason and they chose when there’s all this turmoil in the community to do this crime.”
