Mueller issues subpoena to Trump Organization; demands ‘Russia’ documents

(National SentinelBaseless: Special counsel Robert Mueller expanded his investigation into alleged ‘collusion’ between the 2106 Trump campaign and Russia by issuing a subpoena to the Trump Organization for all Russia-related documents.

According to information leaked to The New York Times, this “is the first known instance of the special counsel demanding documents directly related to President Trump’s businesses, bringing the investigation closer to the president.”

The paper reported that the breadth and scope of the subpoena was not known. The Times also said it wasn’t known why Mueller issued a subpoena rather than simply requesting documents from an entity that oversees all of President Donald J. Trump’s former businesses.

The subpoena was issued “in recent weeks,” according to the paper, which added that it orders the Trump Organization “to hand over all documents related to Russia and other topics he is investigating.”

The demand for the documents likely means that Mueller’s investigation will likely last at least several more weeks, the Times said, despite assurances from Trump’s lawyers earlier this year that it would be winding down soon.

The paper said the demand for Russia-related documents appears to indicate that Mueller’s investigation is expanding to include what role, if any, foreign money played in Trump’s campaign.

The Trump Organization has routinely provided documents to various congressional committees conducting their own collusion investigation. The Times reported that there was no indication the Trump Organization would oppose Mueller’s subpoena.

Trump said in an interview with The New York Times in July that the special counsel would be crossing a “red line” if he probed his family’s finances beyond any relationship with Russia.

As to the collusion angle — the initial reason why Mueller was appointed special counsel by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein — there does not appear to be any evidence to support that allegation.

The House Intelligence Committee’s Republican majority has produced a report that says after 14 months no evidence of collusion can be found. It has been sent to the Democratic minority for approval. From there, it must be cleared by the Intelligence Community before it is released to the public.

The report also disagrees with a previous conclusion by U.S. intelligence agencies that Russian President Vladimir Putin sought to assist Trump and hurt Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, though Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-N.C., disagrees with that part of the report.

Trump has routinely called the collusion claim a hoax and a “witch hunt.”
