Mexico independent presidential candidate Zavala withdraws: aide

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican independent presidential candidate Margarita Zavala has decided to withdraw from the campaign and will not be supporting any other contender, a senior aide said on Wednesday.

Jorge Guajardo, a close advisor to Zavala and former Mexican ambassador to China, said she would not be throwing her support behind any of the remaining candidates.

The Mexican peso firmed 0.7 percent against the dollar after news of Zavala's withdrawal became public.

Zavala, the wife of former Mexican president Felipe Calderon, left her husband's conservative National Action Party to run as an independent. The election will be held on July 1.
