Late Justice Antonin Scalia on Trump candidacy: ‘REFRESHING’; was ‘FASCINATED’

(National SentinelOriginalist: The late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia spoke approvingly of then-GOP presidential nominee Donald J. Trump, noting it was nice to see a candidate who spoke in frank, unfiltered terms, according to a biographer.

“Justice Scalia thought it was most refreshing to have a candidate who was pretty much unfiltered and utterly frank,” said the late jurist’s literary collaborator, Bryan Garner, a legal dictionary editor who spent two weeks in 2016 traveling with Justice Scalia through several Asian countries.

In addition to Trump, Garner — whose book “Nino and Me,” a memoir of his 10-year friendship with Scalia, is set for release on Tuesday — said that the late justice was also a fan of conservative Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker before his campaign stalled.

“But he was fascinated by the fact that Trump was so outspoken in an unfiltered way, and therefore we were seeing something a little more genuine than a candidate whose every utterance is airbrushed,” Garner told The Wall Street Journal.

Garner said it was likely that Scalia would have approved of Trump’s conservative judicial nominees, but he declined to speculate on how the justice would have felt about other aspects of Trump’s presidency.

“These [were] early days in the campaign. It shouldn’t be looked at through the lens of everything that’s happened since,” he said.
