ICE chief hammers California Democrats for attacks against immigration agents

(National SentinelLawless: The head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement heavily criticized California Democrats for supporting state efforts to circumvent immigration law while attacking the agents charged with enforcing it.

Acting ICE Director Thomas Homan also accused Democrats of purposely distorting the nature of a recent operation by the agency to identify and remove illegal aliens from the state, many of whom were convicted criminals.

As reported by The Daily Caller, Homan singled out House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who in February said a targeted ICE operation in northern California was a “bigoted” attempt to “terrorize innocent immigrant families.”

He described her comments as “beyond the pale.”

“Our ICE officers are protecting immigrant communities” by arresting criminal aliens who live among law-abiding immigrants, Homan told reporters.

ICE officers “don’t arrest innocent people” during targeted operations, Homan continued, adding that they arrest only those with previous criminal convictions or pending orders of removal.

Homan also criticized Gov. Jerry Brown (D) for signing legislation designating California a “sanctuary” state for illegal immigrants, while noting that another Democratic critic of ICE, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, voted for the immigration laws his agents are attempting to enforce.

“She voted for the very laws we’re enforcing,” he said, referring Feinstein’s support of the Immigration Control and Financial Responsibility Act of 1996, which increased penalties for some immigration-related offenses.

Last week the federal government sued the state over its sanctuary law. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said that California’s actions amounted to blatant violations of federal law and would not be tolerated.

“There is no nullification; there is no secession,” Sessions said. “Federal law is the supreme law of the land. A refusal to apprehend and deport those, especially the criminal element, effectively rejects all immigration law and creates an open borders system.”

“Open borders is a radical, irrational idea that cannot be accepted,” Sessions added.

Last week, President Donald J. Trump, who is traveling to California Tuesday to view border wall prototypes and attend a high-dollar fundraiser — his first trip to the state since taking office — warned Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf after she tipped off her community to the ICE operation earlier this month.

“She warned them all, ‘Scatter.’ So instead of taking in a 1,000 they took in a fraction of that,” he said of a pre-planned sweep of illegal aliens by agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“What the mayor of Oakland did the other day was a disgrace. They had close to 1,000 people..ready to be taken off the streets, 80 percent with criminal records,” said the president.

“After her warning, they took in about 150… With respect to her, what she did is incredible,” Trump continued. “It’s dangerous in respect to ICE and border patrol. She made law enforcement much more dangerous than it had to be. So we’re looking at that situation very carefully.”
