Former Sen. Bob Dole is bound to a wheelchair, but when the National Anthem began…

(National Sentinel) Respectful: Former Republican senator from Kansas and presidential nominee Bob Dole, who is 94 and bound to a wheelchair, sent the NFL a not-so-subtle message on Wednesday when he was honored on Capitol Hill.

Dole, who is also a U.S. Army World War II veteran, was wounded so badly by German machine gun fire in 1945 he permanently lost the use of his right arm. Nevertheless, after a slow and painful recovery, he went to law school and spent more than four decades in politics, rising to the position of Senate Minority and Senate Majority Leader.

The long-serving senator received the Congressional Gold Medal in a ceremony that included Republican and Democratic leaders, as well as President Donald J. Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

The former Kansas Senator was also honored for being particularly instrumental in the commissioning of the World War II Veterans Memorial.

Though he can no longer walk and remained in his wheelchair for the majority of the ceremony, when the Color Guard walked in hoisting the American flag and the flags of the military services, Dole was seen on camera waiving for an aide.

A young man responded and then helped Dole stand so that he could properly honor the American flag.

“In an America where standing for the national anthem is a controversial act, Bob Dole should be an example to us all,” The Daily Caller reported.

NBC is broadcasting this year’s Super Bowl. Executives said they planned to show any kneeling, protesting players during the broadcast.
