Did the bird “tweet” its gratitude before flying away?

The Maryland Heights Fire Protection District in Missouri shared photos this week of a hummingbird on its Facebook page.

A firefighter paramedic, the district revealed in the Tuesday post, had taken care of the winged creature.

“Firefighter Paramedic Schurwan nursed this ruby throated hummingbird back to health after finding it unresponsive on the engine bay floor,” it explained in the post, which received hundreds of likes.

The post, which received hundreds of likes, added that “Dave used a syringe filled with sugar water to coax the bird to drink until it became more alert and flew out of his palm.”

Captain Robert Daus, a public information officer, told Fox News in a message that Schurwan “treated the hummingbird for approximately 10 min.” 

“When he first arrived at the lifeless bird it was too weak to lift its head up,” he explained. “Before feeding the bird with a syringe he first put his finger in sugar water and rubbed its beak till it perked up enough to drink from the syringe. He continued to feed the hummingbird till it took to flight from his hand.”

Two dogs who were missing for 10 days in the chaos of volcano evacuations in Hawaii were pulled to safety on Sunday morning —after the animals were "surrounded by lava," rescuers said.

Carol Hosley, the owner of the dogs named Brus and Little Dude, was evacuating from her apartment in Leilani Estates when the two dogs ran off in fear, Hawaii News Now reported.

Hosley and Aloha Ilio Rescue, the local nonprofit from which the pups were adopted six months ago, searched for the dogs — Brus, a jack russell terrier-pug mix, and Little Dude, a terrier mix — for more than a week as volcanic fissures continue to open up on Hawaii's Big Island.

"We've been looking for him for 10 days," Daylynn Kyles, president of Aloha Ilio Dog Rescue, told the news outlet. "We've just kept going back, and going back."

Kyles, along with two friends, discovered the two dogs on Sunday in lower Puna, the rescue group wrote on Facebook.

The animal rescuers crawled through grass to the fence line to get to the dogs, which were covered in red ant bites, according to Hawaii News Now.

"We just knew this dog was probably just terrified, he was truly stuck, he couldn't get out," Kyles said. The group later learned they were near the 17th fissure, which opened over the weekend and, as of Monday, is still active.

The dogs' owner said she was "thrilled to death" her furry friends were rescued, telling the news outlet: "The other stuff is stuff, but I got the dogs."

Brus and Little Dude are currently staying with Aloha Ilio Rescue while Hosley looks for a place to stay amid the ongoing volcanic activity.

A sheriff’s deputy in Florida helped save a baby’s life after a mother said her son was “unresponsive,” authorities said.

K9 Deputy Jeremie Nix was driving home after work Wednesday evening when he was “flagged down” by another driver, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook.

Nix soon learned from the 3-month-old’s mother that baby Kingston “was completely unresponsive,” the sheriff’s office said, after which the deputy pulled his car to the side of the road and tried to help.

“After performing several life-saving measures on the child and not seeing any improvement, Deputy Nix decided to put the child in his own patrol car and rush him to Ocala Regional Medical Center,” the sheriff’s office said.

Dashcam video shared by the sheriff’s office caught the incident and showed two women get out of the car, one of whom was holding the baby before she was seen handing him over to Nix, who immediately jumped to action. The deputy is seen shortly after heading back to his car and heard saying over the radio that he was “not waiting on medics” and was going to the “emergency room with the baby.”

“I heard this one breath that was very faint,” Nix recalled, according to the Ocala Star-Banner. “I turned and I remember thinking, ‘I don’t hear sirens. I don’t hear nobody coming. I don’t have time.’”

“I just gripped him as tight as I could and I put it in drive and just went,” he added.

The baby’s mother, Nechole Crowell said Nix “just took off and he left us there and I just followed suit,” the outlet reported.

Shortly after, Nix arrived at the hospital with the baby, and hospital staff started treating him, the sheriff’s office said.

“We are happy to report that Baby Kingston is doing very well and doctors say he will make a full recovery!!” the post said. “Doctors also said that because of K9 Deputy Nix's actions, Baby Kingston is alive today.”

“We are tremendously proud of Deputy Nix and we can already see that he and Baby Kingston will have a deep connection that will last a lifetime!!” the sheriff's office continued.

An update to the post said that Kingston had been released from the hospital and “is happy and healthy!!”

It was unclear what caused the child to initially become unresponsive.

A group of Kansas kids are sprinkling around kindness and gratitude and making life a bit sweeter for first responders.

The youths, who participate in Girls on the Run, an after-school program at Clear Creek Elementary in Shawnee, Kan., baked, frosted and decorated 500 cupcakes for their local heroes.

Ainsley Gale, a fourth-grader involved in the program, told FOX 4 Kansas City that the first responders deserved a treat for all of their hard work.

“They help a lot of people because they’re the first ones to get the call,” Ainsley said.

Girls on the Run is a non-profit organization that helps “teach life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games,” the organization's website states. The program is nationwide and inspires girls to make the impossible, possible.

Kendall Herman heads the organization at Clear Creek Elementary, which consists of 34 members.

“Some really love the lessons that we discuss, and some are here for the running -- and some are here for both,” Herman said.

2 CYCLISTS STRUCK AND KILLED IN SOUTHEAST KANSAS

The girls presented their homemade goods to first responders in Johnson County.

Lt. Lisa Hemphill of Johnson County said she received a cupcake on Tuesday.

“It makes me feel like I could be a good role model for girls,” Hemphill said. “Hopefully, one day they can do something like what I’m doing, whether it’s in EMS or being teachers or whatever work they want to do.”

Ainsley said despite having a large amount of respect for first responders, she sees herself working in a different building when she grows up -- the White House.

“I want to be president,” she said.

A teenager was caught on camera gallantly rescuing a runaway horse along a busy Maryland road Sunday - and the video immediately went viral.

Caroline Shoults was at a riding competition at De Novo Farms in Anne Arundel County when one of the horses broke free from a barn and took off.

Shoults did not hesitate and took off after the horse on horseback while other riders got in a car to help shield the two from other cars, FOX 5 DC reported.

“A brave 16-year-old getting ready to compete stopped to help try to catch her,” Jeannette Newland, a spectator, wrote in a Facebook post sharing a video taken by Julia Young, 13.

In the video, the runaway horse named Ice can be seen galloping on the road’s shoulder as Shoults is spotted trying to catch up.

Young is heard off camera shouting at the fellow teen, telling her to push the runaway horse towards the grass.

“The only thing that kept me sane was just talking to my horse. I can’t quite say I was scared,” Shoults told FOX 5 DC via Skype. “I think I was just so focused on a positive outcome I didn’t have time to be scared, especially in a situation like that and then adrenaline definitely masked a lot of emotions as well.”

After about three miles, Ice eventually tired out and was stopped without harm.

“It was pretty intense with the traffic and [it] could have turned bad in so many ways, but she kept her cool and helped keep the horse safe until she tired herself out,” Newland told the station. “We kept the traffic from trying to pass her and spooking the horses.”

Shoults, who was riding Tinkerbell, went on to win third place after the whole ordeal.

A 2-year-old English mastiff named Gidget was rescued Monday after escaping its home in Colorado and finding itself stuck in a Colorado wastewater treatment plant.

Gidget and her partner-in-crime, a walker coonhound named Buddy, escaped from a house in Pueblo West on Sunday. Buddy returned home midday Monday, but without his friend.

"We have a hound dog that likes to play escape artist with the front door," said Mandi Smith, the dogs’ owner. "When he gets out, Gidget, of course, follows."

An employee found Gidget at an aeriation pond at the wastewater treatment plant, about 6 miles from Smith’s house. The pond makes it impossible for anything to float, Pueblo West Fire Division Chief Brad Davidson said.

Fire crews used a ladder to get to Gidget. The dog was hosed off and turned over to Pueblo Animal Services, where the dog got two decontamination baths at the shelter before being brought back to her owners.

"Gidget is just ecstatic to be home," Smith said. "Out of all the dogs, she's the baby of the house."

Smith said she’s doing her best to try and get rid of the stench the dogs brought home.

"They have gotten so many baths and they still smell," Smith said. "The poor bulldog is keeping her distance."

A Florida feline had one of its nine lives saved by quick-thinking firefighters Sunday.

Palm Bay Fire Rescue was responding to a house fire when firefighters found out the homeowner was still inside the building trying to save her cats.

After safely evacuating the woman, firefighter Jacob Couture went back into the home to rescue the two kittens.

"I'm just happy to have been at the right place at the right time," he told FOX35 Orlando.

One of the kittens had to be resuscitated using an oxygen mask in a moment captured on video by firefighters.

MISSING DOG 'MIRACULOUSLY' RESCUED FROM KENTUCKY RIVER IN DRAMATIC VIDEO

The cat, now affectionately named "Smokey," was scared at the time but was able to be calmed down and warmed up in a blanket held by Couture.

"I'm sure he likes the help," he told FOX35.

The resident of the home was transported to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, according to the fire department. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

A dog that was missing for several days happened to howl at the right time last Wednesday as a man was getting into his truck nearby, triggering a dramatic rescue caught on video.

The dog, named Ginger, had ended up trapped in the mud on a riverbank in Ulysses, Ky. when Darrell Perkins heard her cries for help.

"I was getting in my van to go to work and I hear a lot of howling. It sounded like it was coming from the other side of the river but by knowing that Ginger was missing I thought I would investigate," Perkins said on a Facebook post. "As I walked the River Bank I found Ginger stuck in the mud and in Creek Water next to the river[. She] had been there since Friday."

Perkins said he was "thankful" the river did not rise by a couple feet or the dog would have drowned.

He then called his neighbor and Lawrence County Dog Warden Johnny Rickman to help rescue the dog, as the hill was too steep and muddy for him to venture down alone.

"I didn't think, I just put the harness on and went down and got her," Rickman told WSAZ-TV.

Perkins recorded the rescue, which showed Rickman slowing heading down the muddy hill then slowly helping to bring Ginger back up. He told WSAZ he thinks she fell down the bank, perhaps on Saturday, hurt her leg and has been stuck ever since.

NEGLECTED DOG BORN WITH DEFORMED FACE FINDS HAPPY HOME

The dog's owner, Brenda Osborne, said she left her three dogs out on Friday morning before heading away for the weekend. She didn't realize anything was wrong until last Monday when Ginger was still missing.

"She's like one of the grandkids I guess you'd say," she told the television station.

The 12-year-old dog has since been taken to a veterinarian where she's now eating and drinking, but still is too weak for X-rays.

"It's a miracle we got out in time," Rickman said.

A Good Samaritan is getting praised for his fancy footwork after he literally stuck out his leg to help Ohio cops catch an armed suspect.

Officials said a grandfather, only identified as “Bill,” was waiting outside a Columbus library with his daughter April 3 when police sirens began blaring in the distance.

“Bill,” who was using a walking cane, told police that when he saw a man with his hand in his waistband running toward him trying to escape cops, he had to make a quick decision.

Bill stuck out his back leg to trip the suspect running behind him – giving police just enough time to catch up to the man and apprehend him.

“That move likely saved the 18-year-old suspect’s life,” police wrote in a Facebook post.

The whole exchange was caught on surveillance video and body cameras, and police released the footage Thursday.

“Community involvement, be it by courage, bravery and/or fancy footwork, helped take a criminal off the streets of Columbus,” officials said. “Thank you ‘Bill’ for sticking your leg out for us.”

Police said the suspect was arrested carrying a Glock .09mm pistol with a high capacity extended clip containing 29 rounds.
