Radiation intensifies at Fukushima AGAIN Wiki image

Things are suddenly heating up again with Fukushima. As we reported yesterday, the southern wall of Fukushima reactor #4 apparently collapsed over the past few days, calling into question the structural integrity of the remainder of the containment building.

The mainstream media has said absolutely nothing about this development, continuing its pattern of downplaying news involving Fukushima, radiation or the flawed structure of nuclear power plants. This is hardly surprising, given that many of the largest media outlets (such as NBC and MSNBC) are owned by corporations such as General Electric, the designer of many of the world’s nuclear power plants.

Photos of the failed structure have emerged on Enenews.com, where a report explains that a once-intact wall is now essentially “missing” and that further degradation of the structure could lead to mass evacuations in Japan. As this report is still not confirmed by other sources, we continue to take this with a sense of caution here at NaturalNews. We will continue to monitor the situation and report any relevant developments.

50 million times higher radiation levels

What has hit the mainstream media, however, is a report entitled Impacts of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plants on Marine Radioactivity, authored by Ken Buesseler, Michio Aoyama, and Masao Fukasawa.

This report, published in Environmental Science & Technology, reveals that levels of radioactive cesium reached 50 million times normal levels in the ocean water off the coast of the Fukushima Dai-ichi facility. Even more concerning, the abstract of this paper concludes, “…the concentrations through the end of July remain higher than expected implying continued releases from the reactors or other contaminated sources, such as groundwater or coastal sediments.”

This, of course, contradicts mainstream media reports which for the most part stated that the radiation was “contained” and was not leaking directly into the environment. Only the alternative press has covered the real story on Fukushima, which has now become the worst radiological accident in the history of human civilization.

This same study ultimately concludes that this level of radiation contamination of the ocean is essentially harmless, stating, “…dose calculations suggest minimal impact on marine biota or humans due to direct exposure in surrounding ocean waters, though considerations for biological uptake and consumption of seafood are discussed and further study is warranted.” That’s a conclusion to be viewed with skepticism and caution, of course, as it says on one hand that “it’s no problem” and yet on the other hand, maybe you shouldn’t eat the seafood because we really don’t know what quantity and concentration of radioactive elements may be ingested and concentrated by seafood sources.

Radioactive strontium admittedly leaked into the ocean

Another important development now surfacing is that TEPCO has finally admitted that alarming quantities of radioactive strontium (which has roughly a 30-year half life) have leaked into the ocean — and that the leaks are ongoing!

According to TEPCO, which has repeatedly and deliberately lied to the public in order to downplay any “bad news” about radiological leaks, “26 billion becquerels of radioactive materials” have leaked into the ocean due to the Fukushima accident.

“This suggests that the releases have not ended, so that is of concern,” said Ken Buesseler from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. “If the contaminants end up in the marine sediments / muds, then they will remain there for decades to come, and thus potentially be of concern for benthic biota and consumers of benthic fish/shell fish, i.e. any local filter feeders near the source waters at the coast.”

The worst may be yet to come

What’s clear from all this is that:

• The Fukushima facility remains highly unstable and could dramatically worsen, especially if another earthquake or tsunami strikes the area and causes further degradation of the structural integrity of containment buildings which still house nuclear fuel rods.

• The Fukushima catastrophe is, without question, the most massive radiological disaster ever recorded in human history.

• The mainstream media has consistently (intentionally?) downplayed the severity of the Fukushima disaster, perhaps to try to calm fears by denying the true extent of the problem.

• TEPCO routinely and habitually lied about the status of Fukushima during the meltdown and in the days and weeks following that meltdown.

• We therefore cannot rely upon official sources to accurately inform us of the actual status of the Fukushima facility. The risk of being misled by those official sources is very high.

Under such circumstances, the wise thing to do is stay informed and get prepared in case the Fukushima situation suddenly worsens. Hopefully everyone in North America knows by now that another release of radiation from Fukushima could widely contaminate the West Coast of the United States with radioactive fallout.

Given that government agencies in both the United States and Japan have altered the definitions of allowable radiation exposure limits, it hardly seems reasonable to think that these government are erring on the side of caution. In fact, by all accounts these governments are proactively working to downplay the severity of any future radiological event by claiming that levels of contamination previously considered poisoning are now suddenly “within safe limits.”

But within whose definition of safe limits? After all, the U.S. government also thinks it’s perfectly safe for you to drink fluoride, microwave your body at TSA checkpoints, eat genetically modified organisms, get yourself repeatedly injected with chemical adjuvants in vaccines and drink aspartame.

Aw, c’mon. What’s a little radiation on top of all that?

Aljazeera reported in September that the radiation emitted from Fukushima would rival or surpass Chernobyl in only the weeks following the disaster.

According to Aljazeera:

Experts say that the total radiation leaked will eventually exceed the amounts released from the Chernobyl disaster that the Ukraine in April 1986. This amount would make Fukushima the worst nuclear disaster in history.

This news was from 2011, but the current news isn’t much better. After officials said they were going to perform a ‘cold shutdown’ to prevent any further issues, its now come out that the Fukushima reactor temperature now surpasses 752 degrees — whereas 100 degrees Celsius was required for the cold shutdown.

Tepco, the operators of the plant, say the thermometer is conveniently broken, but they have been known to conceal the truth from the public in the past. It took a report months after the initial Fukushima disaster to state that the amount of radiation released exceeds twice what experts claimed, and that report is actually very conservative. Researchers stated:

Significantly more radioactive cesium was released into the atmosphere as a result of the Fukushima explosion than many experts previously stated. A new study challenges the official explanations of the Fukushima explosion, stating that the amount of radioactive isotope caesium-137 released at the height of the crisis was equivalent to 42% of that from Chernobyl.

The researchers also explain how the plant operating company completely covered it up.

In fact, this statement came with a big delay. The operating company deliberately concealed this information. The explanation is simple – the company is afraid that any checking by competent experts would reveal its inability to save the situation. Only recently, foreign experts founded a consultative body for the clean-up of the accident’s consequences. Moreover, the company is concealing the information about the amount of pollution of the environment.

Dr. Chris Busby, who is a known authority on the Fukushima disaster, actually said that the disaster could lead to 200,000 deaths. Amazingly, reports have already shown that the disaster is killing thousands of individuals. One peer-reviewed study found that radioactive fallout from Fukushima has already killed an estimated 14,000 individuals in the United States — most under age one.

It was also found that radioactive cesium was contaminating San Francisco-area milk with 150% of the EPA’s maximum contamination limit.

Beyond that, you’re also being exposed to a number of other sources of radiation throughout your day that increase the total percentage. What’s more is that some reports have also tied Fukushima radiation to an increase in heart disease. And it’s not going anywhere fast, as cesium-137 has a 30-year half-life. In fact, the land seriously contaminated by the Fukushima disaster will remain dangerously radioactive for up to 300 years.

Food grown in these regions is contaminated with cesium-137, and sadly most of the children living there who eat this food have become unhealthy. The Belrad Institute, after nine years of research and hundreds of autopsies, found that cesium-137 concentrates in the vital organs, particularly the heart and endocrine system. Professor Yuri Bandazhevsky discovered that children contaminated with cesium-137 that produced 50 atomic disintegrations per second (beck-rells) per kilogram of body weight caused irreversible heart damage in a child.

So it’s causing irreversible heart damage. And this is not an isolated issue, either. While radiation is certainly spiking throughout Tokyo, it is really affecting the entire globe. United States researchers are have revealed that radioactive cesium has been detected in US soil in levels that indicate a severe threat to human health.

In a video about the coming effects of Fukushima radiation on US health, one part of the transcript reads:

It is a public health issue and not a personal health issue. What that means is that we will never know who is the individual who got cancer from Fukushima. But we can be sure that the radiation did reach here and that there will be an increase in cancers, especially on the West Coast where the Rocky Mountains stopped most of the radiation and deposited it on the ground.

According to a Japanese news outlet, Iza, on July 1st, 2011 63-year-old Mr. Takashi Kabayama was found dead with a plastic bag over his head in his home office.

Kabayama was a member of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly for the Liberal Democratic Party and had been measuring radiation in an assortment of locations throughout Tokyo. He would then upload his findings to his blog for the world to read, and on the day before he died (June 30, 2011) he measured 0.25 microSv/h in Mizumoto Park in the Katsushika ward located in Tokyo.

Fukushima Diary reported on February 22, 2012 via Gendai that ludicrously high levels of cesium contamination were discovered, also in Mizumoto Park. These levels were so high that they “turned out to be the same level of [the] ‘off-limits zone’ in Chernobyl.”

It is strange that this hasn’t been brought to the public’s attention sooner, because the fact that he was found at 3 AM July 1, 2011, meaning just a short while after he posted his update, is quite unusual.

Why would someone be taking radiation readings and updating their website the day that they were planning to kill themselves?

According to Fukushima Diary, none of his blog posts suggested that he might be suicidal and “he sounded motivated to measure around Tokyo,” something which hardly seems befitting of someone on the verge of taking their own life.

This is not the only anti-nuclear official who has died recently. In fact, it was reported on January 3, 2012 that 64-year-old Uemura Yasuhiro, town councilor of Kowaura Minamiise Machi Mie was found dead in his car with a shotgun wound to the chest.

Yasuhiro was reportedly taking his shotgun to his farm to keep away crows. Police thought it was suicide or a gun accident, even though the shotgun was reportedly placed outside of the car.

He was an outspoken opponent of the construction of the Ashihama nuclear plant of Chubu Electric Power, and after the Fukushima incident he began traveling around Japan lecturing about the dangers of nuclear power.

If only one official who came out against the horrors of Fukushima had perished in mysterious circumstances I would be more ready to discount the possibility of foul play.

However, when multiple bodies start piling up, all of which are connected to bringing the dangers of nuclear power into the sphere of public debate, I have to start wondering.

I don’t know how it is in Japan, but here in the United States we have what I call a “dual justice system” which treats certain sectors of society completely different than others.

On one side there is the ludicrously wealthy along with police, most politicians, most so-called officials, etc. and on the other side is the rest of us.

This allows for police to literally get away with murdering innocent tourists and brutally assault elderly people (with dementia no less) for no apparent reason only to get a written reprimand among other horrors.

Hopefully Japan is a little different and proper investigations into these mysterious incidents can be launched.

I really wish this subject would just go away and that we could just go on with life and have a good time. There are actually so many things to enjoy on Mother Earth—there are the spiritual realms all around us such as the “above beings” (Native American spirituality expression) that that we may dance, intermingle and communicate with (pray to).

Fortunately we know for sure that one day we will join up with those who live beyond their bodies, meaning we are going to die whether we like it or not. It is our spiritual destiny to lose our bodies and let them go back to the dust from whence they came. The bad news is that it is going to happen a whole lot faster for the lot of us humans who will have to learn to survive on an increasingly contaminated planet. It wasn’t enough to cover the globe with lead, then mercury, plastic and a host of other chemicals.

We have now made it more difficult to live on earth and that situation is going to get much worse. There have been severe nuclear accidents before, several very bad ones in Russia and farmers are still feeling the effects of Chernobyl. Hundreds of British sheep farmers still have to obtain a license every time they want to move sheep. Before anything moves off the farm it has to be inspected and scanned with a Geiger counter. That contamination has not gone away; it is still burning people’s and animals’ bodies and will continue to do that for a long time.

Fukushima will start burning radioactive debris containing up to 100,000 becquerels of radioactive cesium per kilogram.[1]

Radioactive hell gets hotter depending on who and where you are, with babies and fetuses suffering the most. As today’s essay develops, the story does get worse. No one talks about Fukushima much anymore, but it is one of the most dangerous and significant events in our history. How many of us are going to come down with cancer, go sterile? And what are we going to say to our kids? The world’s schools are certainly not teaching their students about it, but that’s not surprising since schools do not really educate but instead indoctrinate the young in our civilizations failed ways.

Radioactive Rain-Outs

Nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen is saying that radioactive rain-outs will continue for a year—even in Western U.S. and Canada—because the Japanese are burning radioactive materials. Gundersen says that this radioactivity ends up not only in neighboring prefectures, but also in Hawaii, British Columbia, Oregon, Washington and California. Meteorologically, snow and rain will accelerate local fallout. Local rain showers that originate above radioactive clouds intensify radioactive contamination in certain areas. Contamination tends to be greater in drainage systems, on low ground, and in flat, poorly drained areas.[2] 

Scientists with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute have confirmed that a wave of highly radioactive waste is headed directly for the U.S. west coast.

Now for the really bad news—and if this does not make you sick nothing will. Japan’s former Ambassador to Switzerland, Mr. Mitsuhei Murata, spoke at the public hearing of the Budgetary Committee of the House of Councilors on March 22, 2012 on the Fukushima nuclear power plants accident. Before the Committee, Ambassador Murata strongly stated that, if the crippled building of reactor unit 4—with 1,535 fuel rods in the spent-fuel pool 100 feet (30 meters) above the ground—collapses, not only will it cause a shutdown of all six reactors but it will also affect the common spent-fuel pool containing 6,375 fuel rods, located some 50 meters from reactor 4. In both cases the radioactive rods are not protected by a containment vessel; dangerously, they are open to the air.

This would certainly cause a global catastrophe like we have never before experienced. He stressed that the responsibility of Japan to the rest of the world is immeasurable. Such a catastrophe would affect us all for centuries. Ambassador Murata informed us that the total number of the spent-fuel rods at the Fukushima Daiichi site excluding the rods in the pressure vessel is 11,421 (396+615+566+1,535+994+940+6375).

The No. 4 pool is about 100 feet above ground, is structurally damaged and is exposed to the open elements. If an earthquake or other event were to cause this pool to drain this could result in a catastrophic radiological fire involving nearly 10 times the amount of Cs-137 released by the Chernobyl accident.

Based on U.S. Energy Department data, assuming a total of 11,138 spent-fuel assemblies are being stored at the Dai-Ichi site, nearly all, which is in pools. They contain roughly 336 million curies (~1.2 E+19 Bq) of long-lived radioactivity. About 134 million curies is Cesium-137—roughly 85 times the amount of Cs-137 released at the Chernobyl accident as estimated by the U.S. National Council on Radiation Protection (NCRP).

Reactors that have been operating for decades, such as those at the Fukushima-Dai-Ichi site, have generated some of the largest concentrations of radioactivity on the planet. A loss of coolant in the spent-fuel pool—whether by leakage, spillage, or boiling off of the cooling water—will lead to intense gamma radiation that would prevent human access for hundreds of meters in all directions around the spent-fuel pool, making it impossible to take corrective actions.

Under adverse circumstances there can even be a fuel meltdown in the spent-fuel pool if the temperature climbs to about 2800° C, which would vastly increase the radioactive releases and spread those releases over a much wider area.

Many will find it difficult to appreciate the actual meaning of these figures, yet we can grasp what 85 times more Cesium-137 than the Chernobyl would mean. It would destroy most of the world’s environment and our civilization. This is an issue of human survival.

Though the world’s 190-trillion-dollar indebtedness and the quadrillion in derivatives seem like weapons of mass destruction pointing down all our throats, these are trivial to the permanent destruction that our nuclear industry has provided for us. 

“Several thousand gallons” of water containing as much as five times the government’s “safe” level of radioactive tritium was accidentally released at Exelon Nuclear’s Limerick Generating Station last month and then flushed into the Schuylkill River, The Mercury learned Thursday.

Only those with no children and no plans to have any can shrug their shoulders and yawn; that’s how compromised biological life will be on this planet. Does the body adapt naturally to protect itself from radiation exposure? And if so can we calculate in this protective adaptability and relax about radiation exposures? Dr. Garry F. Gordon, who is considered the “father of chelation therapy,” thinks so, going so far as to say in a June 08, 2012 email to his FACT discussion group subscribers, “I have not been too concerned about the increased low-level exposure most of us might receive due to the nuclear power issues in Japan. I do not see a need to add anything to my personal program that is posted on my website just because there is some increase in low-level radiation exposure following the Japan nuclear power incident.”

Claudia French, RN (retired), the assistant director of the IMVA, wrote to me saying, “I was simply taken aback with shock when I saw this from the man who, above all else, warns us that toxicities are our daily companions and that we must constantly chelate to prevent the harm coming from these! Not to be worried about radiation from Fukushima due to hormesis (our bodies adapting to and automatically up regulating production of life-saving antioxidants) seemed in total opposition to what he has preached about lead and mercury… feeling that these heavy metals are harder to fight against than radiation?”

Claudia said, “He’s 77 years old now, and maybe if someone has been following his personal protocol for many years they might be more immune to the radiation than normal people, just like those of us who are up to par on iodine in our bodies won’t be so affected by I-131 radiation… but he seems to totally dismiss the common folk… in this recent email.” His protocol of supplementatiotn reportedly costs about $1,000 a month. Few can afford that!

Dr. Gordon is barking up the wrong tree when he asks, “Does low-dose radiation have a ‘hormesis’ effect whereby the body upregulates protective mechanisms for which the expected adverse effects are compensated?” Pointing to an article that suggests that glutathione is upregulated to deal with increased oxidative loads and using this point to suggest there’s no need to worry about heavy nucleotide particles is way off the scientific path.

Gordon said, “The body is less able to accommodate heavy metals from coal-burning power plants aggravated by dental fillings, GMO foods, vaccines, total burden of toxins and pathogens” than to the radiation coming from Japan. Sorry Gordon but you are swinging away from medical truth. Radioactive heavy metal particles are dangerous and of course nothing can compete with the toxicity of plutonium. There is enough plutonium in Japan to kill every person on this planet 10,000 times over and plenty of that was at Fukushima.

I would like to direct your and everyone’s attention to the teachings of Dr. Boyd Haley and some other heavyweight scientists who have already weighed in on this very important issue.

The medical profession as well as the public must wake up to what Dr. Haley said many years ago. His warning to the world’s scientists and doctors has mostly gone unnoticed, meaning we are left with a government, medical officials and doctors who have no idea of the real dangers all of humanity is facing as an entire nuclear plant with six reactors is abandoned (too hot to enter) and goes dangerously out of control.

In July of 2005 the National Academy of Sciences came to the conclusion that the preponderance of scientific evidence shows that even very low doses of radiation pose a risk of cancer or other health problems and there is no threshold below which exposure can be viewed as harmless.[1] Many scientists generally assumed that low levels of radiation are harmless since they produced no immediately observable effects.

However during the past few decades tremendously improved radiation measurement techniques, coupled with detailed laboratory studies, revealed many previously unsuspected hazards from low levels of ionized radiation. Some researchers have even added the view that chronic low-level exposure to radiation poses a greater risk than short-term high-level exposure.[2]

It was Dr. John Gofman[3] who promoted a linear no-threshold model for the dangers of radiation, suggesting that even small doses over time could prove harmful. His 1981 book, Radiation and Human Health, expounded on this and gave prediction tables for how much average life expectancy might be affected by radiation. He was professor emeritus of molecular and cell biology at UC Berkeley, he worked on the Manhattan Project on uranium effects, and he established the Biomedical Research Division for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.[4] His 1990 book says that “by any reasonable standard of biomedical proof” there is no threshold level (no harmless dose) of ionizing radiation with respect to radiation mutagenesis and carcinogenesis—a conclusion supported in 1995 by a government-funded radiation committee. His 1995/96 book provides evidence that medical radiation is a co-actor in about 75% of the recent and current breast cancer incidences.

“The results of surveys and biological monitoring of children and adults of Chernobyl point unambiguously to a steady, rapid and dramatic deterioration of health of all victims of the radiation impact of the Chernobyl accident,” wrote Drs. E. B. Burlakova and A. G. Nazarov of the Emanuel Institute of Biochemical Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow.[5] Most interestingly they go on to say, “The dose dependence of the radiation effect may be non-linear, non-monotonic and polymodal in character. Over certain dose ranges, low-level irradiation is more devastating with regard to the results of its action on an organism or a population than acute high-level radiation.”

Dr. Ernest J. Sternglass, professor emeritus of radiation physics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, in his book, Secret Fallout—Low-Level Radiation From Hiroshima To Three-Mile Island, indicated that the risk increased with each additional picture, as the studies of Alice Stewart indicated it did. This clearly implied that there was no significant healing of the damage and thus that the cancer-causing effects of radiation were cumulative.[6]

What few doctors and health officials recognize is that chemicals and radiation combine to act on the very same cellular enzyme pathways. One type of contamination reinforces and strengthens the others so medical treatments need to address both chemical toxicity and radiation poisoning simultaneously.

Exposure to radiation causes a cascade of free radicals that wreak havoc on the body. Radiation also decimates the body’s supply of glutathione, which allows free radicals to run rampant through our body’s tissues and organs. Though there might be some kind of hormesis effect with an uptick of glutathione body defenses, it is vital to understand that glutathione levels cannot be sustained without all the precursors being supplied—namely selenium, magnesium and sulfur.

The International Commission on Radiation Protection [ICRP] exists in practice largely to play down the effects of radiation on human health, and to shield the nuclear industry from compensation claims from the public.

Dr. Gordon we do not need anyone to go around being a mouthpiece for this insanity. To basic science, all radiation is dangerous and life-threatening though of course we do need the sun’s radiation and even the background radiation from the universe to support healthy life down here on earth. But according to modern medicine and the United States government there is nothing to worry about—radiation and heavy metals both are as safe as mother’s milk and that’s why dentists feel free to put mercury in people’s mouths and pediatricians feel it’s okay to inject mercury via vaccines directly into babies’ bloodstreams.

Dr. Gordon wrote saying, “Have you any access to the PBS documentary about the wolves over-running Chernobyl who have high reactivity but are entirely normal and healthy and did you know that there is a 900-pound fish in the pool at Chernobyl? This documentary did not set out to claim all is well; they just show you exactly how things are today at this abandoned facility and its surrounding areas. Did you know that atomic energy personnel exposed by accident to very high levels of radiation who for a while had no sperm later on had all sperm counts return and they had normal children?”

Garry I even know of a group of women who went back to live in the shadow of Chernobyl and they are doing pretty good. I also have read that childhood death rates are obscene and that they want to build lots more nuclear reactors no matter how dangerous they are over the long haul.

The paper you pointed to in your email suggested that, “Biochemical changes in response to radiation exposure among a small group of interventional cardiologists suggests that individuals might adapt to low doses of radiation by upregulating several processes, leading to the release of antioxidants and cellular apoptosis via higher levels of caspase-3 activity in the lymphocytes.”

We are not surprised to hear these researchers find that oxidative stress is actively countered by the body, which will stop at nothing to defend its own best interests. It will cannibalize scarce body resources to increase antioxidant response. The body of a being who has a strong will to live will rise to the occasion if their body is provided the basic resources of organic sulfur, magnesium, iodine, selenium, as well as bicarbonate, to ease everything along.

The strength of the cells’ adaptive capacity is directly related to nutritional sufficiency and proper cellular respiration that removes toxins and wastes through the cell wall. There is no secret or mysterious “hormesis” effect that should pacify us into relaxation about nuclear and heavy-metal contamination!

Cells can respond to stress in various ways ranging from the activation of survival pathways to the initiation of cell death that eventually eliminates damaged cells. Whether cells mount a protective or destructive stress response depends on different factors, but the most important is nutritional status. Bicarbonate deficiencies are also a key factor as is dehydration and the intake of compromised water (fluoride and chlorine) and or polluted air.

A large part of my work since Fukushima has been to put together the strongest protocol for radiation and heavy metal exposure. Both radioactive particles and heavy metals have the same or similar chemical toxicities. There are plenty of basic substances like magnesium, sulfur, sodium bicarbonate and iodine, not to mention medical marijuana, selenium and clay that are not on your personal list (and the magnesium in your protocol is too little and in the wrong form). These items should be on everyone’s list as inexpensive top-priority items for heavy metals and nuclear particles that must be neutralized if at all possible.

I think you have the trust of many doctors around the world as you have had my trust. You have said that I am one of the best health writers/researchers alive and I have said you are one of the most brilliant doctors on earth and these statements have been on my IMVA Publications site for years. Yes your protocol is excellent, even for radiation exposure, but you do not have the authority or the science behind you to belittle the threat. And about six billion people cannot afford your expensive protocol, so you are not covering the needs of humanity and you’re certainly not honing in on the radioactive iodine issue when you say you are not worried about radiation from Japan.

One thing that Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) can be relied upon for: a never ending stream of disinformation with cesium laden piles of putridity.

Firstly, there is the matter of the Unit 4 spent fuel pool, that many experts claim could collapse in a major earthquake leading to massive releases of radiation.

When I sent the story written by Japanese Diplomat, Akio Matsumura, to a Japanese professor I know whose focus is international relations, the tenure-track professor dismissed it as “tabloid journalism.” Talk about a nation with its focus on its own navel, they don’t even know what danger they are in despite the 3/11 catastrophe.

Can you imagine what respectable people who attend conferences and wear suits and ties would have said of someone like me if I went on a campaign to alert people of the disaster that awaited Japan pre-March 2011? I would have been completely ignored or laughed at as a Cassandra and conspiracy nut! So were many sincere anti-nuclear activists at the Citizens Nuclear Information Center in Tokyo.

Now we have to attend to the matter of Tepco’s arrogant stupidity, snideness and snottiness. On April 26, 2012, Tepco attempted to refute claims by Arnie Gunderson and other nuclear experts that the Unit 4 fuel pool building was tilting. Tepco stated that “[t]he No. 4 reactor building is not tilted and it, including the storage pool, will not be destroyed by a quake” (1).

Yet, very recently we learned from NHK and Tepco itself that the Unit 4 building is less stable than previously thought. NHK, the conservative government-run news station reports of “Tilted walls found at Fukushima No.4 reactor” which is different than the entire building being tilted, but does indicate serious problems (2).

Tepco itself has admitted that the Reactor 4 bulge is worse than previously announced. The Fukushima Diary website reports that “[t]he South-West corner of reactor 4 building turned out to be bulged” and leaning outward. This clearly contradicts Tepco’s earlier illogical stance quoted above and analyzed and debunked elsewhere (3; 4; 5).

There is more evidence of contradictions from Tepco (i.e., the Nuclear Village), who appear to run the Japanese government, based on statements made by Tepco in a recent news report, versus what the government has stated regarding the speed to which Tepco will remove the fuel rods from the badly damaged Unit 4 building. Perhaps international pressure along with vociferous anti-nuclear domestic protests are working to some extent, given the following report:

Workers at the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant will begin removing fuel rods from a damaged reactors a year ahead of schedule, a government minister said June 21, a move to address concerns about the risk of a new quake that could cause a further accident and scatter more radioactive debris. ‘We would like to start taking out undamaged fuel this year. Preparation is now under way,’ Japan’s nuclear crisis minister, Goshi Hosono, told Reuters in an interview (6).

However, in the recent news report aired on June 25, 2012, by ABC Australia (7), we learn from the Tepco spokesman that they have no plans to remove the fuel rods until 2013.

Perhaps the word did not get out, or there is a disconnect between what the government is trying to promote versus what Tepco is deciding to do. It’s another case of the Keystone Kops (Tepco) playing a game of tiddlywinks with the Larry, Curly and Moe Outfit (Japan Government).

It is worth noting that while the ABC Australia reporters did an excellent job ofhighlighting the dangers of the Unit 4 spent fuel pool issue, Australia itself is a major exporter of uranium to Japan and part of the global nuclear mafia which benefits from the incredibly expensive and fantastically dangerous nuclear energy scam (8).

In another matter of Tepco’s bad behavior we learn that just as in the case of the BP oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, when BP was actually put in charge of the disaster (i.e., the arsonist investigating the fire), so too has Tepco taken over jurisdiction of Japanese waters:

Many Japanese are wary of the government’s assurances about test results, and Tokyo Electric has made people more suspicious by refusing to let independent experts survey waters inside the roughly 12-mile exclusion zone around the plant. ‘I don’t think anyone now would lie about radiation levels, but in the end, it’s the consumer who will decide,’ said Yoshiaki Saito, a wholesaler who handles tuna, crab and other seafood at the Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo. If nothing else, fish caught near Fukushima would probably fetch far lower prices (9).

Whether or not “Fukushima sea food [is] ‘safe’ for eating” or not, (10), this government survey of sea water near the TEPCO Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant shows very low levels of radiation detected. Apparently the charts convey a contradictory reading of “ND” meaning not detectable; while at the same time recording levels of 1.3 becquerals of cesium 134 per liter of sea water (11).

Japan has allowed seafood caught off the coast near Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to be sold to consumers; although only octopus and marine snails were allowed to be put on the market.

Hirofumi Konno, Soma city’s official in charge of sales at the fishing co-operative, says that with consumers buying the seafood, it proves there is support for the industry. Konno said:

I was filled with both uncertainty and hope today, but I was so happy when I found out the local supermarket had sold out by 3pm.

Testing of the seafood sold for radioactive substances were negligible according to the co-operative. However radioactive cesium, which is a byproduct of the nuclear process, has been found in species of fish from Japan to the west coast of America.

Nobuyuki Yagi, professor of the University of Tokyo, said in regard to Japanese fishing industry: Fishing cannot survive unless people buy the fish. That may seem obvious, but Fukushima is facing up to this.

In April of this year, Steven Manley, professor of biology at California State University Long Beach, says samples from the American west coastline revealed radioactive iodine that could only have come from a nuclear reactor and that iodine 131 “has an eight-day half-life, so it’s pretty much all gone. But this shows what happens half a world away does affect what happens here. I don’t think these levels are harmful, but it’s better if we don’t have it at all.”

Records show that some places were up to 250 times higher in radioactive levels that were recorded prior to the Fukushima disaster.

In one study, researchers from Stanford’s Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific have found that the Pacific Bluefin tuna that migrated from Japan to California are contaminated with cesium, which is a compound found only in nuclear reactors.

The seafood industry has been hoping that the fish they procured were safe for human consumption because the fish were taken several thousand miles from Japanese coastal areas.

The fish was polluted with cesium – 134 and cesium – 137 isotopes. These isotopes do not occur in nature, but are products of nuclear explosions. The levels of cesium found were measured higher than previous years, yet the US government maintains that these radioactive levels are safe for human health.

To purvey disinformation into the social meme, UN’s International Atomic EnergyAgency (IAEA) claimed that their research confirms Japanese milk and vegetables are safe for human consumption. They reported that radiation levels are below cancer-causing levels.

The World Health Organization (WHO) claimed to have assessed the problem of radioactive levels at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant. WHO expounds that the rest of the world can breathe easy because the radioactive material that has been expelled into our biosphere is simply a negligible exposure level.

After the devastation at Fukushima, the Prime Minister of Japan Naoto Kan declared that Japan would become nuclear free. Kan announced that he was heading an initiative to introduce renewable energy sources and move Japan away from its nuclear dependence.

Recently, Japan’s PM has announced that Japan will be restarting idled nuclear reactors to ensure the “survival of society” amid safety fears from the public. The PM said:

Cheap and stable electricity is vital. If all the reactors that previously provided 30 percent of Japan’s electricity supply are halted, or kept idle, Japanese society cannot survive. 

It is my decision that Ohi reactors No.3 and No.4 should be restarted to protect the people’s livelihoods.

The PM’s turnaround on his decision to make Japan nuclear free might have something to do with the US government expressing concerns about Japan not using nuclear and sending the US minister of economy to speak with Japan’s PM to convince the governor of the area that they need to support nuclear power. If the PM and the Japanese government does not change his mind about restarting their nuclear reactors, the Fed has stated they will override the Japanese government’s decision and force them to use nuclear power, according to Kevin Camps, from the watchdog group BeyondNuclear.org.

In a damning 641-page report (the introduction to which is embedded below) produced by the Fukushima Nuclear Accident Independent Investigation Commission (NAIIC), investigators reveal that the horrific and ongoing nuclear disaster at Fukushima was “a profoundly man-made disaster that could and should have been foreseen and prevented.”

Unlike other entities associated with the Japanese government, the NAIIC came to some quite damning conclusions, not the least of which is the accusation that the Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, which continues to refuse to allow outside inspections of the reactor four building containing the dangerous spent fuel pool four, “betrayed the nation’s right to safety from nuclear accidents.”

The Fukushima NAIIC was formed by the statutory law enactment of Diet of Japan (the Japanese bicameral legislature made up of the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors) on October 7, 2011, although the Chairman and Members were appointed in December of 2011.

Unfortunately, it looks like the Japanese peoples’ “right to safety from nuclear accidents” will likely never be respected seeing as they just restarted a reactor amidst massive public protest and that, statistically speaking, nuclear disasters may occur once every 10 to 20 years.

From a purely rational standpoint, it is impossible to recognize a “nation’s right to safety from nuclear accidents” without recognizing their right to be safe from nuclear power entirely, and the Japanese government seems unwilling to do that.

While recognizing the deadly combination of the tsunami and earthquake in March 2011, the investigatory committee concluded that the disaster was in large part actually man-made.

This is because, according to their findings, the conduct and practices which came both before and after the natural disaster aspect of the tragedy actually compounded the problem and “was the result of collusion between the government, the regulators and TEPCO, and the lack of governance by said parties.”

If the report ended there in pointing to collusion between the government and industry, I would be cheering on the authors of this report. However, they don’t stop there and actually say that had the “most basic safety requirements” been addressed, the disaster would never have been of this magnitude.

Some of these safety requirements, which, “The operator (TEPCO), the regulatory bodies (NISA and NSC) and the government body promoting the nuclear power industry (METI), all failed to correctly develop,” include, “assessing the probability of damage, preparing for containing collateral damage from such a disaster, and developing evacuation plans for the public in the case of a serious radiation release.”

All of this and more is included in a brief but incredibly important “Conclusions” section, which I highly encourage everyone to read. Some of the conclusions are generally surveyed in a BBC report, although I would exhort people to actually do the reading for themselves instead of having it fed to them, especially by the BBC.

The chairman of the commission, Kiyoshi Kurokawa, former head of the Tokyo University Department of Medicine, noted in the introduction:

It was a profoundly man-made disaster that could and should have been foreseen and prevented. And its effects could have been mitigated by a more effective human response.

This is no baseless claim, mind you. Their investigation included interviews with some 1,167 people and over 900 hours of hearings.

Unsurprisingly, most of the conclusions and facts dug up by the investigators are in completely contradiction to the version of reality spun by TEPCO and the Japanese government. It is no surprise that they had to actually pay people to disseminate their misinformation.

However, the report did note that in order to pass down a truly comprehensive assessment, the team would have to gain increased access to the inner workings of the various reactors, which is not likely anytime soon.

The investigators determined that the earthquake – which was “more foreseeable” than the tsunami – did a great deal more damage than TEPCO and the government would like us to believe.

This is of vital importance because the constant line we’ve heard is that this was never accounted for because no one would expect such a massive earthquake and tsunami to hit at once.

Indeed, the report notes:

Fukushima Prefecture’s emergency response system was also built on the assumption that a nuclear disaster would not occur at the same time as an earthquake and tsunami.

If the report’s findings are accurate, this means, “the very assumptions informing the building codes governing reactor construction in Japan are open to question,” as Homeland Security News Wire pointed out.

The report is far from flowery in its language, pointing out that TEPCO, the government and regulators all “betrayed the nation’s right to safety from nuclear accidents.” Furthermore, TEPCO, “manipulated its cozy relationship with regulators to take the teeth out of regulations,” according to the report.

The commission also found that the government – especially Prime Minister Naoto Kan – TEPCO and the nuclear regulators were bumbling, inept, ill-informed and incapable of sharing information properly.

“What must be admitted, very painfully, is that this was a disaster ‘Made in Japan,’” said Kurokawa.

“Its fundamental causes are to be found in the ingrained conventions of Japanese culture: our reflexive obedience; our reluctance to question authority; our devotion to ‘sticking with the program;’ our groupism; and our insularity,” added chairman Kurokawa.

It’s incredible to see the quite hideously ugly truth finally emerging. This wasn’t pure accident. This was the product of cover-ups and corporatist relationships which should never exist in the first place.

Hopefully this will serve as the impetus for greater scrutiny and reform of the nuclear industry in every nation which still maintains these types of tight-knit and corrosive relationships with the industries they are supposed to keep in check in order to protect their people.

At least one politician in another country, in this case the United States, is stepping up to the task: Congressman Ed Markey. All we can do now is show our support, speak out, spread this information and hope this trend continues.
