THE LEAD STORY - ROBERT MUELLER'S RUSSIA PROBE, YEAR ONE: The long and winding special counsel Russia investigation that President Trump has routinely decried as a “witch hunt” hit the one-year mark on Thursday, giving Trump’s legal team an opening to renew criticism of the probe’s focus and its investigators ... Legal team member Rudy Giuliani told Fox News on Wednesday that Mueller already has assured them the president can't be indicted. And he said earlier this week that the president's lawyers would use the "anniversary" to double down on calls to wrap up the investigation. Expect vocal reminders from the president's team Thursday that the past year has yielded no collusion-related charges.

'INGRAHAM ANGLE' EXCLUSIVE: GIULIANI SAYS MUELLER SHOULD END PROBE TODAY: President Trump's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, told Fox News' Laura Ingraham Wednesday night that Special Counsel Robert Mueller should wrap up his investigation into alleged collusion with Russia by the Trump campaign, saying that Mueller "has nothing." ... "It's been a year, he’s gotten more than 1.4 million documents, he’s interviewed 28 witnesses, and he has nothing," Giuliani said, "which is why he wants to bring the president into an interview." 

Giuliani spoke to Ingraham the same day he said that Mueller told Trump's legal team he would follow Justice Department guidelines and not indict the sitting president. "They have only exculpatory information about us," he said. "I've been through the documents. So it's about time to get the darn thing over with. It's about time to say, 'Enough. We've tortured this president enough.'" Giuliani said the president's legal team wants Mueller's investigators to "tell us what you have to get from an interview that you don't already have, because he has all the facts to make a decision.

SINGLE LINE CONFIRMATION: President Trump’s newly filed financial disclosure form includes confirmation that the president reimbursed attorney Michael Cohen last year for unspecified “expenses” – apparently the hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election ... The single line, included at the bottom of a page in the middle of the latest financial report, helps explain why Trump legal team member Rudy Giuliani publicly acknowledged the payment for the first time earlier this month, during a Fox News interview. 

At the time, Giuliani told host Sean Hannity that Trump reimbursed Cohen the $130,000 he paid to Daniels in exchange for her silence about an alleged sexual encounter with Trump in 2006. While Trump has denied the underlying allegations, a source told Fox News on Wednesday that Giuliani came forward regarding the payment because he knew it would be in the next financial disclosure report to the Office of Government Ethics.

TRUMP-ENDORSED 'REBELLION': President Trump praised local California leaders for standing up to “deadly and unconstitutional sanctuary state laws” and hailed what he called a “rebellion” against the state’s immigration policies ... “Each of you has bravely resisted California’s deadly and unconstitutional sanctuary state laws,” Trump said at the White House roundtable of local officials on the issue. “You’ve gone through a lot, too, although it’s become quite popular what you do.” The roundtable featured a number of California Republican lawmakers and law enforcement officials who have pushed back against the state’s sanctuary laws which limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown was unimpressed by the roundtable and accused Trump of lying about what is going on in California.

IS A DEAL A DEAL WITH NORTH KOREA? - A day after North Korea canceled a high-level meeting with their southern neighbor, South Korean officials urged them to carry out the denuclearization agreements made during their historic summit last month, Yonhap News reported ... 

The remarks from the south came from their National Security Council (NSC) which met on Thursday, the report said, during which they talked about “future steps” regarding the called off meeting. Following the meeting in late April, a joint announcement from the two Koreas said that they would strive for a “nuclear-free Korean Peninsula” and try to officially end the Korean War. 

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in attended the historic summit.

THE LEAD STORY - NORTH KOREA PREDICTABLY UNPREDICTABLE: North Korea threw potential doubt onto next month's highly anticipated summit between President Trump and dictator Kim Jong Un as the regime reportedly said the United States must stop insisting it “unilaterally” abandon its nuclear program ... The warning, issued by former North Korean nuclear negotiator Kim Gye Gwan, came hours after North Korea canceled a high-level summit with South Korea and threatened to cancel its meeting with the United States over American military drills with South Korea. KCNA, North Korea's state media outlet, claimed that the military drills were a rehearsal for a potential invasion of the country. Trump announced last week that the meeting with Kim would take place in Singapore on June 12. State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said they had not received any "formal or even informal notification of anything," and are continuing to plan the summit.

PRIMARY TUESDAY ROUNDUP: President Trump backed two successful U.S. Senate nominees in Pennsylvania and Nebraska, which were among four states holding primaries Tuesday ...  Four-term U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta, R-Pa., a staunch supporter of Trump, won the Republican nomination. Trump-backed U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer notched an easy Republican primary victory in Nebraska, despite challenges from four GOP candidates who sought to take her seat. Oregon state Rep. Knute Buehler won the GOP gubernatorial primary, besting a crowded field vying to compete against incumbent Democrat Kate Brown in November. Social worker and political newcomer Kara Eastman won the Democratic nomination for Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District, defeating former Rep. Brad Ashford in a close race. She will face first-term Republican Rep. Don Bacon, who was unopposed in his primary.

HEADED FOR CONFIRMATION: President Trump's pick to lead the CIA, Gina Haspel, appeared headed for confirmation as she picked up endorsements from key Democrats ahead of the pivotal vote expected later this week ... Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee Mark Warner, D-Va., Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., and Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., all offered support to Haspel on Tuesday afternoon. These endorsements follow Haspel support from Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin and Joe Donnelly. All but Warner are facing tough re-election races this year. Haspel was nominated to replace former CIA director and now-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said her confirmation vote will be held this week. A Senate Intelligence Committee vote is expected Wednesday.

RED ALERT IN HAWAII: Hawaii residents are facing the highest volcanic activity alert after officials warned that the Big Island's Kilauea volcano is growing more explosive -- as a massive ash cloud grows in the sky ... The U.S. Geological Survey upgraded its previous volcano warning from "orange" to "red," signifying that an "eruption is forecasted to be imminent with significant emission of ash into the atmosphere likely," or that an eruption is already underway. Nearly 20 fissures have opened since the Kilauea volcano started erupting 12 days ago. On Monday, another fissure spewing lava and unhealthy gas opened up, and a crack in the Earth that emerged a day earlier was sending molten rock on a slow run for the ocean, officials said.

THE LEAD STORY - PAPER OF DISTORTED RECORD? - Critics on social media accused the New York Times of anti-Israel bias in the newspaper's reporting on riots in the Gaza Strip that left dozens of Palestinians dead Monday ... At the height of the violence, the headline on the Times' website read: "Israel Kills 58 and Injures Over 1,300 by Gunfire at Gaza Border." On Monday evening, the slightly edited headline read: "Israeli Soldiers Kill Scores at Gaza Border; Thousands Hurt." A subhead described "[a] mass attempt by Palestinians to cross the border fence" that "quickly turned violent, as Israeli soldiers responded with rifle fire." An Israeli military spokesman said protesters carried out "concerted, coordinated" attacks on the border fence separating Gaza from Israel, causing "significant damage." Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus also told the Associated Press that Hamas militants disguised as protesters tried to infiltrate, and there were at least three instances of armed Hamas gunmen trying to carry out attacks. The Times did not mention those claims until the 42nd paragraph of its main story Monday night. Some Twitter users accused the Times of ignoring the Hamas angle.

MELANIA ON THE MEND: First lady Melania Trump is expected to remain hospitalized for the rest of the week following a "long-planned" procedure to treat a benign kidney condition, White House officials said ...  Mrs. Trump had an embolization procedure Monday morning at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center outside Washington, her staff said. President Trump visited her and tweeted that the procedure was "successful" and that she was in "good spirits."

'ERODING' TRUST IN THE DOJ: Senior House Republicans Reps. Trey Gowdy and Devin Nunes are accusing the Justice Department of being behind “anonymous attacks” in the press targeting a House Intelligence Committee GOP staffer who helped author the committee’s well-publicized memo alleging surveillance abuse by the FBI and DOJ during the 2016 election. The same House staffer is also a driving force behind the latest Russia records standoff ... "I would have a lot more respect for DOJ or House committee Democrats if they would take out their frustrations on members of Congress, and leave staffers alone,” Gowdy, the Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee, told Fox News. “The members make the final decision and are responsible for them, not staffers." Nunes and Gowdy were reacting to a weekend New York Times report that cited anonymous sources in detailing growing tension between the Justice Department and Gowdy and Nunes.

ATTEMPTING TO PLUG THE LEAKS: Kellyanne Conway said there will likely be changes at the White House after an aide made a disparaging comment about ailing Sen. John McCain that was leaked to the media ... During a private discussion about CIA nominee Gina Haspel, aide Kelly Riddell Sadler said not to be concerned about McCain's possible "nay'" vote because "he's dying anyway." The conversation was leaked to the press, and Sadler received a barrage of criticism, including from McCain's wife, Cindy. Conway, the counselor to President Trump blasted the leaker or leakers, telling "The Story with Martha MacCallum" that all White House employees serve "at the pleasure of the president" and should conduct themselves accordingly. Trump called West Wing leakers "traitors and cowards" and said in a tweet that the "leaks coming out of the White House are a massive over exaggeration put out by the Fake News Media in order to make us look as bad as possible."

FANTASY SPORTS COMPANIES LOOKING TO CASH IN: It's not just sports fans celebrating the Supreme Court decision to allow states to legalize sports gambling as fantasy brands DraftKings and FanDuel look to cash in on the ruling ... Matt Kalish, co-founder of DraftKings, the Boston-based fantasy sports company, told Fox Business earlier this month that it has been developing a sports-betting platform since 2017. “We’ve been working on our readiness for something like this, and it’s certainly something that we will offer whenever it’s available in the U.S.,” Kalish said. Kalish, who is now chief revenue officer at DraftKings, said the company already has a technology platform in place that can help it transform easily into a sportsbook.
