Nikolas Cruz, the teen accused of killing 17 people during a Florida high school shooting on Feb. 14, reportedly threatened to shoot his brother and mother during separate past incidents.

The violent revelations came during an interview with Zachary Cruz, the younger brother of the suspect, who spoke to the Miami Herald.

Zachary, 18, told the outlet his brother once pointed a loaded gun at him after a spat when their mother came home from food shopping. Zachary said he’d knocked a jar of Nutella from his brother’s hands after he saw Nikolas stick his fingers in it.

Nikolas, 19, allegedly ran up to his room and retrieved his gun, loaded it when he came down and then held it up to his younger brother as their mother watched, according to the report.

"If you're gonna shoot me, shoot me!" Zachary said he yelled at his brother.

The moment deescalated quickly, with Nikolas allegedly putting the gun away and returning to watch TV, he told the Herald. But Zachary said the moment stuck with him and he “never messed with him again.”

During a separate incident in September, Zachary told the Herald about a fight between his brother and their mother, Lynda.

"Nik got his AR-15 and put it to my mom's head," Zachary said. "He was yelling at her because she wouldn't take him to a cabin." It wasn’t clear if the weapon was loaded. He said their mother ran to her car and drove away.

"He was in the middle of the driveway, in the middle of the street with his AR-15," Zachary told the Herald. "I had 911 ready to go on my phone. I was scared. I think he just came up and he put his gun away and I hung up."

Zachary told the Herald that his older brother was depressed and cut himself, recalling one time where he claimed he saw Nikolas in the bathroom with his wrists bleeding.

"He was listening to music really loud," Zachary said. "He said something about demons. I hate saying it but I shrugged it off."

Zachary told the outlet about his brother’s love of guns, as well as how he liked to kill birds, lizards and squirrels, the latter of which he said Nikolas would “preserve its tail.”

"He was mentally ill, and in hindsight, his actions were a cry for help," Zachary said of his brother.

Nikolas was also often secluded from other students due to his autism, Zachary told the Herald. He said his brother “just stood out” because of his appearance and tendencies.

“My heart still feels heavy because of all of it,” Zachary said. “I should have stepped up. He had nobody.”

“A lot of people failed him,” he later said. “Including me.”

The Herald said they interviewed Zachary shortly before he moved to Virginia, where he'd been offered a job with a nonprofit organization. The move came after he pleaded no contest to misdemeanor trespassing at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the site of the deadly massacre, for riding his skateboard on campus about a month after the shooting.

Scot Peterson, a former deputy with the Broward County Sheriff's Office, has reportedly started to receive a hefty pension — three months after he retired amid the aftermath of the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida.

Peterson, a 33-year law enforcement veteran, was the resource deputy stationed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14 when 17 people were killed by gunfire.

As one of the largest mass shootings in modern U.S. history unfolded, Peterson never entered the building where alleged gunman Nikolas Cruz was opening fire and instead took up a position outside the building that was under attack.

Peterson, 55, was widely criticized for his actions and Broward Sheriff Scott Israel opened an internal investigation. The deputy resigned and retired on Feb. 23, "rather than face possible termination."

Peterson, the Sun-Sentinel reported, has received a monthly state pension of $8,702.35 since April. He was paid $101,879.03 last year, according to the news outlet, which cited sheriff's office records.

The former deputy stood by his actions after the shooting. His lawyer said in a statement at the time that "the allegations that Mr. Peterson was a coward and that his performance, under the circumstances, failed to meet the standards of police officers are patently untrue."

Peterson hasn't been criminally charged in relation to the shooting, but his pension benefits could possibly be forefeited, according to the Sentinel, pending a Florida state inquiry into how police responded to the shooting.

Peterson was named in a wrongful death suit last month by Andrew Pollack, father of shooting victim Meadow, who tweeted the former cop "let those children and teachers die."

A new report is questioning whether a “culture of leniency” at Broward County schools in Florida allowed Parkland school massacre suspect Nikolas Cruz to slip through the cracks.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported that Cruz was suspended at least 67 days over less than a year and a half at Westglades Middle School; his infractions continued at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, until he finally was forced to leave.

Cruz, 19, is charged with 17 counts of murder and 17 counts of attempted murder for the Valentine’s Day shooting. His lawyers repeatedly have said Cruz would plead guilty if guaranteed a sentence of life without parole, but prosecutors have sought the death penalty.

Broward County School Superintendent Robert Runcie didn’t immediately return Fox News’ request for comment.

Florida school officials said last week that Cruz was referred during middle school to a mentoring program aimed at steering children away from the criminal justice system.

The school district last week clarified that Cruz was referred to the program while at middle school in 2013 but he didn’t fully participate, and that he did not participate in the program at all while at Stoneman Douglas.

Runcie told the Sun Sentinel that Cruz had been referred to the program in 2013 for vandalizing a bathroom. Cruz did not complete the three-day stint, the district told the Sun Sentinel, but administrators haven’t said why.

Hunter Pollack, whose sister Meadow Pollack was killed in the shooting, said in a Tweet last week: “the PROMISE program you implemented in our schools allowed 18-1958 stay to in the @browardschools. It cost 17 lives. Our school board is filled with compulsive liars. This must stop.”

The PROMISE program was aimed at reducing recidivism rates for students who commit non-violent misdemeanors and keeping them out of the juvenile justice system. The program helps students develop pro-social and resiliency skills, improve academics and may address family and community struggles that may be contributing to behavior issues, according to the school district’s website.

School officials said the program can last for as little as two days. Each case varies.

According to the Sun Sentinel, the school system’s lenient discipline was an added public-relations benefit to showcase lower suspensions, expulsions and arrests along with rising graduation rates.

The program, according to the paper, allows a student to commit a subsequent infraction without being considered a repeat offender as long as it’s not the exact same violation in the exact same year. A clean slate is started the following year.

“It’s extremely problematic,” Tim Sternberg, a former assistant principal at Pine Ridge Educational Center who administered the PROMISE program, told the Sun Sentinel. “You can develop a psyche that it is OK to commit crime because you can refresh the clock every year.”

More than five years ago, for instance, according to the Sun Sentinel, a high school student who used profanity toward a staff member would receive a three- to 10-day suspension. That was reduced to one to two days in recent years. The first violation for disruptive classroom behavior called for an in-school suspension of one to five days. In recent years, it was reduced to a suspension of under one day, the paper reported.

According to the Sun Sentinel, Mary Fitzgerald taught for 37 years in the district before retiring from Sunrise Middle in Fort Lauderdale in 2016 because of her concerns about student discipline.

“It was so many things. I had three students bring knives to my classroom. One was out of the classroom for one day. Another had so many things on his record, he was gone for five days. None were expelled,” she told the Sun Sentinel. “My principal basically would tell me it was his job to market the school. He was adamant about not looking bad.”

Several major gun manufacturers said they were severing ties with Dick’s Sporting Goods in response to the company's February announcement it would no longer sell assault-style weapons due to the deadly Parkland school shooting.

O.F. Mossberg & Sons Inc., the parent company of Mossberg guns, announced Wednesday they would no longer be doing business with the sports retailer. Mossberg & Sons ended its association with Dick's after Dick’s hired three Washington, D.C., lobbyists to push for gun control efforts, the National Review reported.

“It has come to our attention that Dick’s Sporting Goods recently hired lobbyists on Capitol Hill to promote additional gun control,” Mossberg & Sons CEO Iver Mossberg wrote in a press release. “Make no mistake, Mossberg is a staunch supporter of the U.S. Constitution and our Second Amendment rights, and we fully disagree with Dick’s Sporting Goods’ recent anti-Second Amendment actions.”

The manufacturer called on customers to “visit one of the thousands of pro-Second Amendment firearm retailers” instead.

The Mossberg announcement came just one day after MKS Supply, which makes Hi-Point firearms, also announced it would pull out of Dick's. Last week, gun manufacturer Springfield Armory said it was halting business with the sport’s supply company, too.

“We believe that refusing to sell long guns to adults under age 21, while many young adults in our military are not similarly restricted, is wrong. We believe that villainizing modern sporting rifles in response to pressure from uninformed, anti-gun voices is wrong,” MKS Supply president Charles Brown wrote a statement. “We believe that hiring lobbyists to oppose American citizens’ freedoms secured by the Second Amendment is wrong. Dick’s Sporting Goods and Field & Stream, in purportedly doing all of these things, have demonstrated that they do not share our values. [We’re] standing by the American people by refusing any further sales to Dick’s Sporting Goods & Field & Stream.”

On Feb. 28, Dick’s announced it would immediately stop selling assault-style rifles and ban the sales of all guns to anyone under 21. The Pittsburgh-based company announced last month it would destroy all unsold firearms pulled off the shelves. The sports retailer decided to make the changes after the Valentine’s Day shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The accused gunman, Nikolas Cruz, shot and killed 17 students and faculty with an AR-15. Cruz legally purchased the firearm.

Following the massacre, shooting survivors called on Congress to pass stricter gun laws. The company previously pulled sporting rifles from its shelves after the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

The sporting goods store is currently facing two lawsuits due to the imposed age limit on purchasing firearms.

Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz was referred to a controversial Broward School District discipline program known as PROMISE -- which he never completed, newly released documents show.

Despite repeated denials in the months following the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Superintendent Robert Runcie tweeted Monday morning that “additional information” would be revealed as part of an independent review underway.

Broward School District issued a clarifying statement, explaining Runcie was correct in his earlier assertions, as Cruz was not in PROMISE during High School, but rather was referred while in middle school, and ultimately did not complete the program for reasons that are still unclear.

“Late Friday evening, after diligently analyzing data from multiple sources and systems, we confirmed that while attending Westglades Middle School in 2013, there was a disciplinary infraction (“Vandalism/Destruction of Property less than $1,000” offense on November 25, 2013, in a bathroom at Westglades Middle School), that could have been a PROMISE eligible offense," the district said. "However, while our records indicate that Cruz underwent an intake interview/process at Pine Ridge on November 26, 2013, it does not appear that Cruz completed the recommended three-day assignment/placement.”

Alex Arreaza, attorney for the family of Parkland victim Anthony Borges, says his team is investigating the entire discipline matrix at Broward Schools and the behavior intervention programs Cruz may have been a part of. They want to know, if Cruz never completed the PROMISE diversionary program, why he wasn't arrested.

“This demonstrates what we’ve been arguing all along...that the school board is playing fast and loose with people that are dangerous like Nikolas Cruz...what other intervention programs was he part of?" Arreaza said.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., announced last week he asked the Department of Justice and Department of Education to look at Broward’s discipline protocols and the district’s PROMISE agreement.

"I was repeatedly told that the Parkland shooter was never in the Promise Program I was asking questions about. Now it turns out that in fact he was," Rubio tweeted Monday.

The independent review being conducted regarding Cruz’s school history is expected to be completed in June.

A separate statewide commission investigating the shooting is expecting to have their findings and summary report in January.
