Fox News is no stranger to hating on weed. In fact, the Free Thought Project has reported on their insane reefer madness several times before. However, on this Thursday’s episode of Fox New’s Outnumbered, the propaganda and utter ignorance hit a new high—no pun intended—as David Avella, the president of GOPAC, claimed that people are laying in the street “having just shot up with marijuana.” Seriously.

During the segment, Avella was discussing a recently proposed resolution that recommends convicted felons be referred to as “formerly incarcerated person” or former “justice-involved” person or “returning resident” — instead of felon.

“We don’t want people to be forever labeled for the worst things that they have done,” Supervisor Matt Haney said to the San Francisco Chronicle. “We want them ultimately to become contributing citizens, and referring to them as felons is like a scarlet letter that they can never get away from.”

This is certainly a worthy point, but making it an issue of semantics is plain silly. Instead of changing terminology how about we stop convicting people of felony “crimes” when there is no victim? That way, we won’t have to worry about them being “forever labeled.” But I digress.

During the segment on Fox News, Avella claimed that this attitude behind attempting to help those who’ve been incarcerated is leading to major problems — like people pooping in the street. While some of the folks pooping in the street may have been in jail before, many of them have not, making Avella’s point moot.

He then went on to make one of the most hilarious and utterly stupid claims we’ve ever reported on here at TFTP. The claim is so silly that it has long been the subject of internet memes for years — claiming people are shooting up marijuana.

“California has tried to clear out their prisons and yet every year they continue to have overcrowded prisons,” Avella said. “And the focus ought to be on a society that follows the law, not allowing people to defecate in the streets, not allowing individuals to lay on the street having just shot up with marijuana – or heroin and having a needle sticking out of them.”

Mediaite reporter Caleb Ecarma posted the clip to Twitter saying, “fox news is very worried about homeless people laying ‘in the street having just shot up with marijuana’”

There is no doubt that California is experiencing a homelessness and addiction crisis. In certain parts of the state, the homeless problem has turned into a public health issue as well, as many homeless people struggling with addiction have resorted to using public sidewalks as personal toilets.

However, it appears that instead of addressing it with actual solutions like the construction of tiny homes or rehabilitation centers or allowing free market solutions, authorities have turned to the police state. They are now promising to arrest homeless people for merely being in the wrong part of the town—a “solution” Avella would likely advocate for as a means of removing those dirty marijuana injectors from the streets.

This type of reefer madness from folks at Fox is and has been extremely entertaining over the years. However, it shows just how propagandized some people are.

In December, TFTP reported on Fox and Friends claiming that marijuana is “killing people every day.”

Fox and Friends was covering the story out of Mulberry, Florida in which a 12-year-old kid handed out THC gummies in a gym class at his middle school. At least five of his classmates went to the hospital with symptoms one would expect from a child ingesting marijuana—such as stomach pain, dizziness, and nausea.

Local media ran with the story, claiming all the kids were hospitalized and made it seem like it was the end of the world. And, while it is certainly a terrible idea for a child to eat a THC gummy, it is most assuredly not the end of the world—as marijuana has never killed anyone, ever. All the kids are now fine and the child who gave them the gummies faces seven felony charges for possessing and distributing marijuana.

After hyping up fear about the kids eating gummies, the folks at Fox & Friends went on to demonize marijuana in general. As if he had channeled the ghost of Henry Anslinger, Fox & Friends co-host, Brian Kilmeade began spewing ignorant lies and assertions, straight out of the 1930s.

“No one talks about this — THC is addicting,” Kilmeade said. “I know so many people, they say they were told one thing and they end up getting addicted to it. That is an addicting substance. There is a price to pay for pot.”

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd then expressed his agreement and went further—claiming that marijuana is literally “killing people every day.”

You can’t make this up.

Months before they claimed marijuana was killing people, Fox News’ Medical ‘Expert’ and A-Team member, Dr. Marc Siegel went on a rant on how “regular marijuana use carries significant health risks.” Out of the gate, the “expert” falsely claimed that fatal car accidents involving pot have doubled since legalization.

As TFTP reported at the time, a study published by the American Public Health Association found that states with legal medical cannabis have lower rates of traffic fatalities than states with full prohibition. The researchers analyzed 29 years of data in the Fatality Analysis Reporting System.

Nevertheless, this “expert” continued to make false claims.

Toward the end of the show, the host showed just how ridiculous their propaganda piece was by talking about having some Catholic bishop who claimed to be addicted to marijuana. Listening to the host explain the addiction was outright hilarious.

“He (the bishop) would smoke marijuana and he wouldn’t get a high off of it,” said the host before becoming the subject of one of the most hilarious anti-reefer madness memes to ever make it on to the internet.

“So he’d have to smoke another ONE,” she said. “And another one, and another one. And, he’d smoked four (marijuanas) in one sitting.”



Perhaps if the bishop would’ve been injecting those four marijuanas instead of smoking them, he’d be just fine.

Here we go again with more Russia hysteria, courtesy of the Washington Post.

Any time a story comes out of Washington Post, readers should realize three things. First, WAPO is a regular attendee at the secretive elite Bilderberg annual conference, has been for decades. Two, so is WAPO’s relatively new owner, Amazon mogul Jeff Bezos. Three, Bezos literally works with the CIA, having taken contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars from the agency to provide its cloud data storage.

When those three facts are taken into account, it’s a lot easier to consider the possible agendas at play when you hear that the paper was forced to retract an unfounded story scaremongering that Russian hackers penetrated the US electric grid.

The original story was that a virus was found in a laptop at a Burlington, Vermont electric company, and that virus was proof that a Russian hacking operation penetrated America’s power grid.

Turns out, the infected laptop was never hooked into the power grid. Also, there’s apparently no actual proof Russians hacked said laptop.

WAPO was forced to retract, adding this editor’s note:

“An earlier version of this story incorrectly said that Russian hackers had penetrated the U.S. electric grid. Authorities say there is no indication of that so far. The computer at Burlington Electric that was hacked was not attached to the grid,” the editor’s note read.

Do you really think an accusation like this was just a casual “mistake”? Do you think a paper like the Washington Post doesn’t have an editing and vetting process for what goes to print?

The editor’s note comes a little late, as the Cold War-like panic over Russia hacking what we’ve been told over and over for years now is our extremely vulnerable power grid already occurred. The original story prompted a flurry of angry accusations, with Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin calling Russian President Vladimir Putin a “thug” in a written statement quoted excessively all over the mainstream media.

“Vermonters and all Americans should be both alarmed and outraged that one of the world’s leading thugs, Vladimir Putin, has been attempting to hack our electric grid, which we rely upon to support our quality-of-life, economy, health, and safety,” said Shumlin in a written statement.

The damage the story caused has already been done, which seems to be the whole point of Russian hysteria “stories” like this.

The propaganda war against Russia (and the American people) is in full swing. We should also keep in mind two more things: A) domestic propaganda dissemination by the U.S. government against its own citizens is now officially legal (here’s why) and B) Obama just signed the “Countering Disinformation and Propaganda Act” into law, also called the Countering Information Warfare Act of 2016.

A new project has been announced by Arizona State University’s Center on the Future of War and think tank New America. This collaboration has created a subset within ASU titled, “The Weaponized Narrative Initiative.” Two Co-directors, Brad Allenby and Joel Garreau, have penned a must-read opinion piece at Defense One, wherein they have employed the Orwellian catchphrase of “weaponized narrative” to replace what’s commonly known as propaganda.

The two authors center their piece with a premise of apocalyptic concern about foreign State actors and influence peddling, saying that “in the hands of professionals” the emotional techniques of narrative are a cornerstone of perception control over the target populace.

In the hands of professionals, the powerful emotions of anger and fear can be used to control adversaries, limit their options, and disrupt their functional capabilities.

Ironically their justifications for the U.S. government to make propaganda Mission #1 begin with two embedded links to dubious claims and outright falsehoods stemming from the discredited Washington Post promoting the idea that the Russians hacked the U.S. election and are supposedly employing a battery of alternative news outlets, to produce “fake news.”

Other motives cited by the authors for taking extreme action are everything from Brexit to Ukraine and basically anything else that would see people awakening en masse to the gross mismanagement of their feudal leaders. These populist uprisings are instead seen as coordinated efforts by a cadre of mind terrorists who apparently want to “undermine an opponent’s civilization, identity, and will by generating complexity, confusion, and political and social schisms.”

While I suppose that it makes perfect sense to utilize duplicity in a missive about the value of propaganda, it doesn’t portend an ease of finding truth in the future. This initiative essentially argues for exactly what the establishment has been seeking – the co-opting of all forms of communication under the all-consuming directive of National Security. Moreover, it is also part of the ongoing (official) change of position from utilizing propaganda overseas to permitting it at home by eliminating in 2013 the ban upon that activity. This fact demands us to revisit the above quote about using anger and fear as a form of control if we are to be the designated recipients as well.

Weaponized Narrative Is The New Battlespace

Conventional military dominance is still critical to the superpower status of the United States. But even in a military sense, it is no longer enough: if an American election can be controlled by an adversarial power, then stealth aircraft and special forces are not the answer. With lawmakers poised to authorize $160 million to counter Russian “fake news” and disinformation, and the CIA and the Congress examining meddling in the U.S. election and democracies around the world, it’s time to see weaponized narrative for what it is: a deep threat to national security.

Weaponized narrative seeks to undermine an opponent’s civilization, identity, and will by generating complexity, confusion, and political and social schisms. It can be used tactically, as part of explicit military or geopolitical conflict; or strategically, as a way to reduce, neutralize, and defeat a civilization, state, or organization. Done well, it limits or even eliminates the need for armed force to achieve political and military aims.

The efforts to muscle into the affairs of the American presidency, Brexit, the Ukraine, the Baltics, and NATO reflect a shift to a “post-factual” political and cultural environment that is vulnerable to weaponized narrative. This begs three deeper questions:

• How global is this phenomenon?


• Are the underlying drivers temporary or systemic?


• What are the implications for an American military used to technological dominance?

Far from being simply a U.S. or U.K. phenomenon, shifts to “post-factualism” can be seen in Poland, Hungary, Turkey, France, and the Philippines, among other democracies. Russia, whose own political culture is deeply post-factual and indeed post-modern, is now ably constructing ironic, highly cynical, weaponized narratives that were effective in the Ukrainian invasion, and are now destabilizing the Baltic states and the U.S. election process.

Such a large and varied shift to weaponized narrative implies that the enablers are indeed systemic. One fundamental underpinning – often overlooked – is the accelerating volume and velocity of information. Cultures, institutions, and individuals are, among many other things, information-processing mechanisms. As they become overwhelmed with information complexity, the tendency to retreat into simpler narratives becomes stronger.

Under this stress, cultures fragment. Institutions are stretched until they become ineffective or even dysfunctional. Individuals who define their identity primarily through the state – such as Americans, Russians, Chinese, or Europeans – retreat to a mythic Golden Age nationalism, while those who prioritize cultural and religious bonds retreat to fundamentalism.

Narrative is as old as tribes.  Humans are pattern-seeking storytelling animals.  We cannot endure an absence of meaning.  Rather than look up at the distribution of lights in the night sky and deal with randomness, we will eagerly connect those dots and adorn them with the most elaborate – even poetic – tales of heroes and princesses and bears and dippers.   We have a hard-wired need for myth.  Narrative is basic to what it means to be human.

What’s new is the extraordinary power of today’s weaponized narrative. It attacks our group identity – our sense of who we are, our privilege of not being identified as “other.” The rise of the Connected Age allows attacks that tear down old identities that have bound us together. But it also allows the creation of narratives that define the new differences between “us” and “them” that are worth fighting for.

Weaponized narrative comes at a critical juncture. The speed of upheaval in our lives is unprecedented. It will be filled by something. We are desperate for something to hang on to.

By offering cheap passage through a complex world, weaponized narrative furnishes emotional certainty at the cost of rational understanding. The emotionally satisfying decision to accept a weaponized narrative — to believe, to have faith — inoculates cultures, institutions, and individuals against counterarguments and inconvenient facts.

This departure from rationality opens such ring-fenced belief communities to manipulation and their societies to attack. These communities can be strengthened through media tools and messages that reinforce the narrative — crucially, by demonizing outsiders. Trust is extended only to those who believe, leaving other institutional and social structures to erode.

In the hands of professionals, the powerful emotions of anger and fear can be used to control adversaries, limit their options, and disrupt their functional capabilities. This is a unique form of soft power. In such campaigns, facts are not necessary because – contrary to the old memes of the Enlightenment – truth does not necessarily prevail. It can be overwhelmed with constantly repeated and replenished falsehood. Especially powerful are falsehoods or simplifications that the target cohort has been primed to believe by the underlying narratives with which they are also being supplied.

It’s a self-reinforcing loop. This process was clear in Ukraine, in Brexit, in creation of alt-right and other far right and left communities in many countries, and in the American presidential election. All of these campaigns combine indigenous factors with known or suspected Russian deployment of weaponized narrative, achieving significant benefits for Russia with low risk of conventional military responses by the West. Indeed, the response by America, NATO, and European states has been confused, sporadic, and ineffective.

In the short term, then, weaponized narrative challenges existing Western military and security institutions grown comfortable in their post-Cold War conventional-force dominance. At least one major adversary now has a capability – and indeed a new battlespace – that is not just unfamiliar. It is one where institutional, historical, and cultural factors put the U.S. at a significant disadvantage.

A final note for those who might assume that the rantings of university types and think tanks are not always listened to in the halls of true power, it is worth remembering that Arizona State was the site of a secret mind control program that was revealed to Activist Post by a whistleblower in 2013. Although funding for the project was allegedly halted following this revelation, we have seen the science of direct mind control that they had been working on being verified now in mainstream media and being pushed for in establishment medicine.

At the very least, it seems that the military-industrial complex continues to expect its citizens to pay for their own enslavement.

The ability for technology and innovations to transform global economics and geopolitics is often underestimated, even sidelined in retrospect.

However, from the technological achievements that gave the British Empire mastery over the seas, to the industrial revolution that eventually disrupted and unraveled the empire’s carefully constructed global system of mercantilism, the march of technological progress literally governors the rise and fall of global centers of power and the empires built around them.

Disruptive Information Technology

With the advent of information technology (IT), what once required immense capital and a substantial workforce to disseminate information across large segments of the population can now be done by a single individual for virtually no cost at all.

It is no longer necessarily the amount of resources one has at their disposal, but rather the power of their ideas and words that determine the efficacy of their message and the impact it has on society.

IT has leveled the playing field. The United States and Europe for decades, monopolized the flow of information across various forms of media. During World War II, the Allies easily outsmarted Axis powers and their less sophisticated, clumsy propaganda efforts. Between World War II and the Cold War, the US and British ruling circles not only held uncontested influence over their own populations, but through Voice of America and the BBC, they were able to project that influence abroad.

The cost of opening a radio station, a television studio, or a printing press to produce newspapers was prohibitive for the vast majority of people who may have disagreed with the “consensus” created by those who had the resources to produce mass media.

However today, not only does IT allow states once targeted by Western propaganda to better protect political and economic stability within their borders, they are able to get their side of the story out to Western audiences.

Beyond that, independent activists, journalists, and analysts can now write and speak before audiences of millions, contesting “mainstream” narratives promoted by circles of political and economic power worldwide.

The effects of this are evident everywhere we look.

The “alternative media,” has already significantly disrupted manufactured “consensus” across a wide variety of interests from big-agriculture and big-pharmaceuticals, to agendas surrounding geopolitical conflicts everywhere from Ukraine to Syria.

Re-centralizing and Reasserting Control

Independent news, analysis, and activist networks have flourished on the Internet, primarily through blogs, websites, and video channels. However, special interests have invested much in reasserting control over narratives and information in general by re-centralizing media platforms.

This is being done in particular with social media, and especially Facebook. Facebook boasts nearly 1.8 billion users. Virtually every person one passes on the streets using their mobile device, is using Facebook to connect with their friends and to access news and information. Facebook’s popularity has all but centralized the majority of online users’ activities, thus reasserting control over information has begun here.

Facebook has used many different pretexts to roll out this system of control. In 2014, it claimed that it was changing the way it displays posts in user news feeds because:

Rather than showing people all possible content, News Feed is designed to show each person on Facebook the content that’s most relevant to them. Of the 1,500+ stories a person might see whenever they log onto Facebook, News Feed displays approximately 300. To choose which stories to show, News Feed ranks each possible story (from more to less important) by looking at thousands of factors relative to each person.

However, it is not the user that determines what is most relevant to them, but rather an algorithm created by Facebook. In reality, the change meant that those disseminating information through Facebook and reaching large numbers of people now suddenly found their reach significantly shortened. To reach people that have already consciously decided to follow certain users, it is now necessary to pay Facebook money to “promote” posts.

In essence, the very obstacles of capital in relation to public reach dismantled by the advent of IT, have been reintroduced through Facebook’s monopoly over social media.

In 2016, Facebook would tighten the screws further – this time under the pretext of combating “fake news.” “Fake news” is a term created by the very monopolies slowly diminishing in the face of expanding and ever sophisticated alternative media.

While hysteria is being created by linking “fake news” with “Russian propaganda” and “white nationalists,” in reality the measures being put in place to “fact check” and subsequently censor information deemed “fake news” will target everything that contradicts narratives promoted by US and European special interests – everything from promoting wars, to promoting and expanding big-business.

Time For Another Disruption

In any struggle, adaptation is required. With Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms joining the so-called war on “fake news,” those who seek to maintain the rise of the alternative media and a balance of power across information space must identify the special interests driving this agenda, as well as various means to undermine and overcome it.

Russia, for example, has VKontakte (VK), which competes with Facebook and is widely popular across Russia. It diminishes Facebook’s monopoly over social media and gives Russia the ability to control social media within its borders. VK is also a profitable company.

China, likewise, has its own domestic tech-giants that allow it to control media within its borders and among its population.

This creates a balance of power between nations within information space. To create a balance of power within nations, there are other alternatives.

Just like cryptocurrencies are disrupting traditional financial institutions and the control they exercise over global monetary systems, peer-to-peer (P2P) social media platforms may help solve the problem of monopolies like Facebook exercising control over the information we receive – or don’t receive.

Alternatives like FreeNet are not centrally controlled. Users download a free program onto their computer and it connects them directly with others using FreeNet around the world. There is no centralized administrator. Rather than a hub to which all users connect like Facebook – P2P networks resemble a mesh in which everyone serves as a node.

Users are anonymous if they wish to be, and content cannot be controlled or censored, nor can access to information be throttled back as Facebook’s news feed algorithms do.

Enterprising states or individuals dedicated to establishing a balance of power across information space could make and promote their own P2P social media platforms. While they are not capable of being controlled like Facebook, VK, or China’s centralized alternatives, they still help undermine foreign control – and in the long term, help states adjust to technological decentralization that will inevitably unfold regardless.

While money will not be made in the same way as Facebook’s founders are profiting from their control over social media, another form of profit results for the individuals or states that create such a platform.

Geopolitically, a successful, widely used, and disruptive P2P social networking platform that undermines or entirely breaks Facebook’s control over social media evens the playing field and allows individuals and states to once again get their side of the story out to the public on equal footing to the “fact checkers” seeking to combat “fake news” on Facebook, Twitter, and other centralized platforms dominated by Western tech-giants.

P2P will not make billions in profits for its creators, but it could help avert a war, disrupt a foreign monopoly from undermining and destroying a nation’s economy, or allow a socioeconomic alternative to take root and flourish that otherwise would be hindered by the West’s attempts to reassert control over information space and eliminate competition both politically and economically.

When we think of things like social media, we may not immediately link it to the profound impact it has on geopolitics, economics, and the rise and fall of nation states and even regions of the world. But if Facebook’s role in the 2011 US-engineered “Arab Spring” serves as any kind of example or warning, it is that uncontested domination over information space can literally destroy not just an entire nation, but an entire region of the planet.

Creating alternatives to Facebook, then, is as essential to a state or individual’s security as any traditional weapon system. To face the modern age without such alternatives is to take the battlefield unarmed, unprotected, and entirely unprepared.

Last week, WikiLeaks dumped what seems to be authentic CIA documents which revealed, among other things, that the spy agency has a way of hacking into smart TVs in order to spy on targeted persons of interest. The data dump, known as the Vault 7 release, also showed the CIA has the ability to hack into Apple phones as well. While the conjugation of the verb is apparently incorrect, when Buzzfeed News recently posted a tweet with an attached story which stated Apple had patched its IOS vulnerabilities described in Vault 7, WikiLeaks responded with a tweet of its own.

The agency, committed to forcing governments to operate with transparency, called Buzzfeed “fakenews” and stated Apple had not been able to patch those weaknesses in its operating system.

In Buzzfeed’s own article Apple states: “…our initial analysis indicates that many of the issues leaked today were already patched in the latest iOS…” — not all the issues, as Buzzfeed implied.

At one point, the FBI admitted it had not developed the capability to get into the Apple IOS. Readers may recall James Comey had actually petitioned Congress to force Apple to cooperate with the FBI and help the investigative bureau unlock one of the San Bernardino terrorist’s iPhones. Then, abruptly, Comey withdrew his request to mandate Apple to cooperate. As a result, those who were following the story began to speculate the FBI had found another way to get inside the phone.

With the WikiLeaks data dump last week, the world now knows that Apple’s proprietary operating system is vulnerable to attack, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. For years, iPhone and Apple users have been under the impression their operating system was not vulnerable to attack from viruses, spyware, or malware. And for decades now, there’ve been very few issues to cause concern or alarm. But that all changed last week with the revelation the government can penetrate their defenses at will.

According to WikiLeaks, there are 14 exploits the CIA can and does use to gain access to IOS data. The hacking tools have eclectic names as well. Three are named Sal, Rhino, and Ironic, and the archive demonstrates the CIA was in the business of paying certain entities for the rights to the program and its uses.

Even Wired reiterated what Buzzfeed stated, that the company (Apple) had fixed the problems which the world’s most powerful spy agency exploited.

In the iOS documents: the security issues detailed are all given codenames, such as the Elderpiggy, Juggernaut, and Winterspy. Listed in the details are the types of exploit (e.g. API); the types of access the code run (kernel and remote exploits are featured); what version of iOS the flaw works for; descriptions of the issues; and who it was found by (GCHQ, the NSA, and more are featured). Apple has since said the flaws highlighted in the documents had already been fixed in past patches.

The government’s spin machine was in full force over the weekend, with the former CIA deputy director, Mike Morrell, calling it an “inside job” and said Americans should, “be proud that their intelligence agency has developed these capabilities to collect intelligence on our adversaries who are trying to undermine our security and in some cases kill Americans. So I think that is how the average American should think about it.” He also said earlier that Americans shouldn’t be worried about the CIA’s hacking operations, saying they’re not permitted to target American nationals.

Well, Mr. Morrell, if that’s your real name, and if you’re no longer with the agency, it makes no difference to any free thinker. We don’t want any intelligence agency operative, former or not, telling us how we should think, especially one which is a part of an intelligence community which has reportedly been known to spy on all Americans.
