Editor's Note: Michael Lewendon, and his wife witnessed an enormous, saucer-shaped UFO near the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE), a nuclear weapons manufacturing facility, located in Burghfield , West Berkshire, England on September 11th, 2004. Given the size of the object, and that the sighting occurred during the day in clear skies, the couple assumed that there certainly would have been other witnesses, as well as being captured on “traffic cameras,” along with “the myriad of security cameras around the AWE.”

Much to their chagrin repeated inquiries to government officials fell on deaf ears; however, finally through their persistence, and the assistance of researcher, Ananda Sirisena, their MP (Member of Parliament) acted on their behalf and made an official inquiry to AWE; below is their response. (Pertinent names have been redacted).–FW

The original report can be found here, and below is the addendum, originally published in April of last year:

Met the witnesses again in December 2016 and revisited the site of the observation of the massive object near and above the AWE (Atomic Weapons Establishment) on 11th. September 2004. The witness ML – Michael Lewendon, stated that, "The thunderous-looking clouds were rushing through the object, as if it was a form of camouflage. But the sky was blue - not a cloud anywhere. The rushing clouds gave the impression, together with the pastel coloured lights, that the object was spinning. There must have been over 40 or more lights around the object, so huge was the UFO. "I felt privileged, felt as if I was gifted to see such an event. Phew, from being scared one minute to amazement in my heart. The craft was hovering 50 yards away, about 200 feet in the air."

By Ananda Sirisena The UFO Chronicles Copyright © Ananda Sirisena 2010-2018

Michael estimated the craft to be 100 -200 metres across and 30 metres deep, with a hint of a dome on top. It could have been larger he estimates, being conservative. After getting out of his van, observing the saucer-shaped object for a full five to seven minutes, during which time he tooted the horn several times to try and awaken nearby residents, the object started to move. No one else came to view and no other cars passed during those few minutes.

"I decided to tell myself to remember every detail, as I was seeing something that was going to be investigated and my information could be of great significance" I had time to place an article by a road sign, which I recovered a few days later, just in case we were somewhere else; the article was still there. "The ship moved off in an arc shape to our left, going up as it moved. Its path took it straight over the atomic research base, 500 yards away and then it went parallel to the M4 motorway, towards London. That is where we lost sight of the ship. I drove up the road to the bridge which goes over the M4 and parked the van again to see if there was anything I could add to this UFO sighting."

Michael is perplexed at the lack of investigation by the authorities. He wrote to the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, hoping to receive some acknowledgement of his report. He received no reply. He even wrote to the Gracious Queen of England, hoping to hear about some sort of investigation by some official body. He is convinced that the traffic cameras covering the motorway would have picked up the object, as well as the myriad of security cameras around the AWE. He asks, "What about weather stations, the BBC, satellite imagery and Google Earth?"

He tells me,

"I do really want any report to concentrate on the reluctance of the government to investigate. This was no little light in the sky at night. It was not for a few seconds, this "thing" was huge and massive, larger than Wembley stadium. It could have been occupied by hundreds of thousands of people. In total my wife and I observed this "spaceship" for over 8 minutes. I need your write-up of our sighting to confront the powers that have the ability to investigate, to go through official archives and come up with an answer. It will be the same results, as if we saw this yesterday. We need to tell the people that I have tried to get an investigation - but who has the power to initiate this?"

"This goes down in history as the biggest missed chance to reproduce that day's events. They came here to do something, change something, leave something. They never bothered about me and Betty, they never harmed us. The whole point about this is that it never got investigated. There must be evidence in official archives that indicate we might have been in some sort of "time warp". Instruments in and around this area will show distortions of time and space, some kind of a tunnel. If they look, they will find all we saw. There's a national security risk for one thing because this "spaceship" was hovering over the AWE. This has implications for space travel, this knowledge belongs to mankind and our children's children; these archives will show that space travel exists."

Michael's frustration about the lack of an official response led him to write a children's story about their encounter, which he sent to Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace. He hopes the Prince of Wales will read the story to his grandchildren. I checked with the British UFO Research Association - they have no reports from Reading for that day. ML remembers that on this bright morning, before sunrise, he saw the crescent of the moon, with a "very bright" light, like a bright star, close to it. Initially he thought that bright light was the International Space Station but now he is sure it was Venus.

PRINCE Philip's uncle Lord Mountbatten was a UFO enthusiast and even wrote an official report about an alien in a silver spaceship landing on his estate, historical documents show. [...] "The object was shaped like a child's huge humming-top and half way between 20ft or 30ft in diameter," the official report states.

By Emma Parry The Sun 9-28-17

"Its colour was like dull aluminium, rather like a kitchen saucepan. It was shaped like the sketch which I have endeavoured to make, and had portholes all around the middle, rather like a steamer has."

It went on: "While I was watching, a column, about the thickness of a man, descended from the centre of the saucer and I suddenly noticed on it, what appeared to be a man, presumably standing on a small platform on the end.

"He did not appear to be holding on to anything. He seemed to be dressed in a dark suit of overalls and was wearing a close fitting hat or helmet."

For decades, the U.S. government has been accused of not only secretly investigating the existence of extra-terrestrials on and around our planet, but of conducting a generation-spanning cover up aimed at keeping the public at large in the dark about such visitors. For many

Americans, these accusations are little more than a plotline in some of the loftier episodes of the X-Files, but in certain circles, these accusations come with dire concern, if not a bit of dramatic exaggeration.

As we’ve covered before on SOFREP, in truth, the U.S. government did devote both personnel and resources to getting to the bottom of the rash of UFO sightings that occurred around the country in the 1950s and 60s, and even the infamously secretive CIA is willing to admit that not all of the occurrences the government investigated could be readily explained. ...

The NSA has released in full the document UFOs and the Intelligence Community Blind Spot to Surprise or Deceptive Data, following an FOIA request to review redacted sections for further declassification. In a letter dated July 17, 2017, the Agency responded that the previously partially published document was processed as a Mandatory Declassification Review and subsequently released. The letter and accompanying file may be viewed and downloaded at the link above. We first explored the doc, composed at some point prior to 1979 by an unnamed author, here at The UFO Trail in the January blog post,

By Jack Brewer ufotrail.blogspot.com 8-10-17

NSA UFO Docs. Two redacted sections of the seven-page file were noted. The first section provided an example of how human response to perceived unusual phenomena can be detrimental, particularly from a military perspective. Images below show previously redacted pages on the left, with the now fully disclosed pages on the right.

Offering an example of detrimental responses, the author explained how a USAF technician "was engaged in first level traffic analysis and intercept processing against Soviet Bloc countries," when one of the countries began to report an unusual radar track. It was described as "a high flying fast moving object with an erratic flight pattern." Although identified as occasionally moving against the wind, the Bloc "began reporting the object as a balloon."

"The next Bloc nation picked up the object and continued the designation of balloon despite the erratic flight pattern, high speed, and against the wind maneuvers," the author continued.

It was further explained that the airman noted a variety of emotional reactions taking place among personnel within the American processing facility. Such reactions included "everyone was more edgy and silent than usual," as well as "aggressive and distracted responses" to requests for clarification of some of the data.

The author concluded human flaws leave us blinded to unusual or surprising material. Some people, however, it was suggested, "are less affected by strange phenomena than others, though still frightened by it, they remain capable of reporting it with a fair degree of objectivity."

The second redacted section was the author's recommendations to effectively address such challenges, which included training intelligence analysts "to be able to deal with unusual phenomena." It was also suggested:

Select a group of analysts and evaluators who have the natural capability to see unusual phenomena and be able to process it. Form these analysts into a special surprise alert team responsible directly to the JCS and the highest levels of the intelligence community and intensively train them further in the art of processing surprise material.

Further recommendations included providing intensive training to high level military officers responsible for strategic decisions. Such training included "the objective handling and analysis of surprise material."

The document offers some intriguing points for consideration. Among them is the author's interest in Air Force personnel reactions to surprise data. Also noteworthy, in my opinion, is the author's seemingly at times uncritical interpretations of reported UFO phenomena and ways to conduct investigation.

For instance, an event can be "so shockingly unusual," the author reports, it "is buried in the unconscious of the person where it is only accessible to hypnosis" or other carefully conducted modes of communication. Such views show how deeper, more accurate understandings of the unreliability of hypnosis as a memory retrieval tool have evolved in the scientific community and presumably among NSA assets. We periodically see similar outdated views reflected in IC Cold War era docs concerning other UFO and paranormal topics, as well.

Related dynamics and NSA historic willingness to explore the fringe were considered in a March blog post titled, NSA Interest in the Paranormal. In a manner of speaking, the Gulf Breeze Six episode - whatever it may have ultimately involved - was not an anomaly as much a part of the natural progression of topics explored and activities regularly conducted by the Agency. That doesn't necessarily make it any less interesting, but should be clearly understood as the context is relevant: NSA and other agencies, such as DARPA and CIA, are as historically involved in exploring the fringe as debunking it, if not more so. That creates many potential options for the IC from one era and project to the next, as well as lines of research for those of us following along.

A secret database filled with UFO incidents reported by airline crews is being kept away from prying eyes

THE public may never learn of the recent UFO sightings made by pilots in our skies thanks to a piece of EU legislation, it has emerged. Airline staff report a number of strange sightings to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) every year, it is understood.

By Margi Murphy The Sun 7-5-17

Since the MoD closed its UFO desk in 2009, the CAA has become the last British government organisation to retain an interest in UFOs and keep files on incidents involving civilian aircrews.

But it has decided not to release a dossier detailing sightings or incidents between 2011 and 2017.

An Unidentified Flying Object (UFO), spotted near the Lithuanian border on 25 June by two duty motor police patrol officers, Jaunius Poera and Laimis Kraujalis placed the whole Vilius police on the alert.

By Itar-Tass 6-26-1996

Vehicle loads of soldiers from the ARAS Rapid Reaction Force, sniffer dogs and police reinforcements immediately arrived on scene of the emergency.

According to eyewitness accounts ... they noticed a spherical object hanging and "pulsing," alternately shrinking and expanding. At the same time, they heard what they described as "a strange sound like an electric or electronic crackle,"wanting to take a closer look at the UFO, the policemen moved toward it. When they advanced about 50 meters through the long grass, the police said the sphere moved away, rose higher and rapidly departed in the direction of Vilnius.

"[T]here didn't seem to be an official reason for the CIA to pay any attention to UFO research. Then, in 1990, Ron [Pandolfi] told me the official reason: the possibility of espionage. He said that in the 1970's, the CIA had obtained 'firm evidence' that the KGB had devised a plan to use US citizens, including UFOlogists, to penetrate the US defense program." - Bruce Maccabee, PhD, The FBI-CIA-UFO Connection: The Hidden UFO Activities of USA Intelligence Agencies (p. 354)

Please understand when people holding security clearances start whispering around water coolers about classified information they think should be published, it tends to attract attention. More on that shortly, but first let's take a look courtesy of The Black Vault at an investigation launched by the FBI into the activities of Boyd Bushman.

A 1999 FBI memo established Bushman was indeed employed at Lockheed Martin (LM). The man's claims of holding Top Secret clearance while working as a Senior Specialist were also verified. Please note, however, LM expressed concerns to the Bureau of what "may be an ongoing attempt to elicit LM proprietary or USG classified information" surrounding Bushman:

During his tour in the Far East, Mr. Wallace Bush, Electronics Engineer, Classified Reconnaissance Branch, Director of Intelligence, Headquarters, Far East Air Forces, had collected information on UFO radar incidents, re-interviewed witnesses, produced updated Air Intelligence Information Reports on some cases, kept records of meetings in which UFOs were discussed, and evaluated UFO radar reports. He turned the collected information over to Air Technical Intelligence Liaison Office, Far East Air Force.

Ottawa as though he were a special guest. The possibility of some afternoon rain showers that Wednesday was in the forecast. Journalist Valentín García was among those who looked at the sky that day, but it seems he saw more than just a storm warning.

This is what a document declassified by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) attests. It forms part of a series of documents disclosed last February, a considerable part of them related to the likelihood of unidentified flying object sightings.

Valentín García, as the CIA reports, was crossing Avenida de Jose Antonio - the modern Gran Via de les Cortes Catalanes - on the way to his newsroom when he saw something strange - too strange - up in the sky. "I saw a strange object flying at high speed from the Prat Airport, some 2000 meters over the ground, leaving a broad plume of smoke in his wake," the journalist told the news agency. García even made some inquiries about the object and ascertained that it was not an aircraft of which the El Prat and Sabadell Airports were aware. He also noted that there were differences with the so-called flying saucers because it did not emit "flashes or light, nor did it spin on an axis."

The reporter was not alone in seeing that craft, according to what is presented in the CIA's declassified pages. "My colleagues at the office saw the smoke, but not the object," said one document. A curious item of information is that when it was already over Badalona, the craft or whatever it was stopped expelling the eye-catching smoke and "vanished for a few seconds, reappearing once again kilometers later, issuing smoke. Telephones started ringing at the paper's newsroom, with people claiming having seen the same smoking vehicle that Valentín García mentioned.

There is something more, although all we have is a reference in the CIA papers. A photograph is known to exist, but unfortunately, it appears to remain classified because it does not appear in the raft of documents released on 21 February. It was taken by Francisco Andreu and according to the note, [the object] "presented a diagonal stripe." Oddly, it is said that the photo was taken on 17 May, even though the information is from the 21st of that month. Clerical error?

What is indeed certain is that this incident, whose existence is known thanks to a journalist in contact with the CIA, caught the attention of the U.S. intelligence services.

Every few months, the document crops up on some corner of the Internet. The NSA has a document on its site that seems to confirm that, in 1969, an extraterrestrial transmission came in. The document, labelled "Key to The Extraterrestrial Messages," is a follow-on to two 1966 documents called "Extraterrestrial Intelligence" and "Communications with Extraterrestrial Intelligence."

"Communications" is more an assessment of how we might someday hear from aliens, including the idea of a "neutrino beam" rather than radio signals. It also demonstrates how we might try to reach out to any potential alien intelligence. Author Lambros D. Callimahos, a former U.S. Army codebreaker, suggests that advanced mathematical equations could provide a galactic "Rosetta stone" for future contact.

But the "Key to the Extraterrestrial Messages" assumes that, in three short years, we had already found that contact. It makes reference to the original NSA doc, which states, "Recently a series of radio messages was heard coming from outer space. The transmission was not continuous but was cut by pauses into pieces which could be taken as units, for they were repeated over and over again." The "Key to the Extraterrestrial Messages" was the solution to those problems. [...]
