As a new study finds that an ingredient in Monsanto’s popular herbicide is harming honey bees the corporation is seeking to have a recent $289 million jury award thrown out of court.

A newly published study from researchers at the University of Texas at Austin points to the popular chemical glyphosate as a culprit for harming special gut bacteria in honey bees. The study, “Glyphosate perturbs the gut microbiota of honey bees”, was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and points to exposure to glyphosate as disrupting the gut bacteria and making bees more susceptible to illness. Glyphosate is the main ingredient in Monsanto’s popular herbicide Roundup.

“Bees rely on a specialized gut microbiota that benefits growth and provides defense against pathogens,” the researchers write. “Exposing bees to glyphosate alters the bee gut community and increases susceptibility to infection by opportunistic pathogens.”  The researchers investigated the effects of glyphosate exposure on specific sizes and composition of honey bee gut bacteria. “We found the microbiome was affected by glyphosate exposure during and after gut colonization, and that glyphosate exposure during early gut colonization increased mortality of bees exposed to an opportunistic pathogen.”

Further, the researchers note that some species in the bee gut can handle higher concentrations of glyphosate due to the presence of a specific enzyme while others are sensitive due to the presence of another enzyme.

Bayer AG, the newly minted parent company of Monsanto Co, released their own statement claiming the study was unreliable due to the small sample of individual bees and that the study does not meet international guidelines on pesticide research. The chemical company also stated that it was “questionable whether the concentrations of the substance tested could at all be absorbed by bee populations in the open over a relevant period of time.”

The study comes as Bayer and Monsanto continue to fight claims that their products cause cancer in humans.

In early August, a California jury found that Monsanto failed to notify Dewayne Johnson and other consumers of the dangers of the company’s chemical concoctions. The jury handed down a $289 million award to Dewayne Johnson, a former school groundskeeper who claimed Monsanto’s glyphosate-based weed-killers gave him cancer. Johnson told the jury he had been involved in two accidents during his work in which he was doused with the Monsanto’s RoundUp, the first of which happened in 2012. By 2014 Johnson had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Now Monsanto is claiming there is insufficient evidence available to support Johnson’s claims.

The company said in motions filed in San Francisco’s Superior Court of California that the jury’s decision was insufficiently supported by the evidence presented at trial by school groundskeeper Dewayne Johnson. Reuters reports that Monsanto called on San Francisco Superior Court Judge Suzanne Bolanos to either throw the verdict out, reduce the award, or grant the company a new trial. The motion will be heard on October 10.  Monsanto is also facing a reported 8,000 similar lawsuits across the United States and the government of Vietnam recently discussed taking legal actions against the much-maligned company.

Bayer  released a statement stating that Johnson’s evidence during his trial “fell well below the causation standard required under California law.”

“The jury’s decision is wholly at odds with over 40 years of real-world use, an extensive body of scientific data and analysis … which support the conclusion that glyphosate-based herbicides are safe for use and do not cause cancer in humans,” Bayer said in a statement on Tuesday.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in September 2017 released an assessment of glyphosate risks and concluded the chemical is not a likely carcinogen to humans. The EPA’s decision conflicts with a March 2015 report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer that found that glyphosate “probably” contributes to non-Hodgkin lymphoma in humans and classified it as a ‘Group 2A’ carcinogen.

The IARC report was published in The Lancet Oncology and detailed evaluations of organophosphate pesticides and herbicides. The report concluded that there was “limited evidence of carcinogenicity in humans for non-Hodgkin lymphoma.” The evidence for this conclusion was pulled from studies of exposure to the chemical in the US, Canada, and Sweden published since 2001. The researchers found “convincing evidence that glyphosate can also cause cancer in laboratory animals.”

Shortly after the IARC review, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), an independent agency funded by the European Union, shot back with their own study, claiming glyphosate is “unlikely to pose a carcinogenic hazard to humans.” Those studies were followed by research from experts with the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The FAO released a statement claiming glyphosate is “unlikely to pose a carcinogenic risk to humans” exposed to it through food. The WHO co-signed the statement with the FAO. The organizations also found that glyphosate is not likely to be genotoxic — destructive to cell’s genetic material — in humans.

As of 2018 the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Health Organization, the European Food Safety Authority, and the United Nations say glyphosate does not pose a risk of cancer to humans. On the other end of the spectrum, the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer IARC states that it could be linked to cancer.

The latest neo-conservative warmonger to join the Trump Administration does not bode well for the people of Iran.

On Thursday Donald Trump announced that John Bolton, a former official in George W. Bush’s administration and former ambassador to the UN, would be his new National Security Advisor. Bolton is a warhawk who called for the invasion of Iraq in search of non-existent weapons of mass destruction and has for years called for the invasion of Iran.

Middle East Eye collected a number of quotes from Bolton over the years that indicate his plans for Iran and other nations viewed as a threat to national security of the U.S. government. And by that I mean the people who secretly wield control of corporate and state power. In 2009, Bolton said that regime change is “ultimately, the only thing that will stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons.” As recent as 2015 Bolton call for a U.S./Israel joint bombing campaign.“Such action should be combined with vigorous American support for Iran’s opposition, aimed at regime change in Tehran.”

Meanwhile, Senator Rand Paul questioned the appointment. “It concerns me that Trump would put someone in charge who is unhinged as far as believing in absolute and total intervention,” Paul stated. Bolton’s appointment was also criticized by Trita Parsi, leader of the National Iranian American Council.

Further, it seems that Bolton and former Mayor of New York Rudy Giuliani have already promised the regime change would be happening within the next year. “Just eight months ago, at a Paris gathering, Bolton told members of the Iranian exile group, known as the Mujahedeen Khalq, MEK, or People’s Mujahedeen, that the Trump administration should embrace their goal of immediate regime change in Iran and recognize their group as a ‘viable’ alternative,” The Intercept reports.

“The behavior and the objectives of the regime are not going to change and, therefore, the only solution is to change the regime itself,” newly appointed National Security Advisor John Bolton told the crowd. The Intercept also noted that Iranian expatriate journalist Bahman Kalbasi reported that Bolton ended his talk by promising, “And that’s why, before 2019, we here will celebrate in Tehran!”

At a recent celebration of the Persian New Year, Rudy Giuliani promised the audience that “if anything, John Bolton has become more determined that there needs to be regime change in Iran, that the nuclear agreement needs to be burned, and that you need to be in charge of that country.” Disturbingly, Giuliani reportedly led the crowd in a chant of “regime change!”.

It should also be noted that Bolton is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, an organization whose members have influenced the state of geopolitics for the last few generations. Bolton was also a member of the neo-conservative, warhawk think tank, “Project for the New American Century,” which was enthusiastically promoting the lie about Saddam Hussein possessing weapons of mass destruction.

In 2000, PNAC released a report titled Rebuilding America’s Defenses which outlined a strategy of regime change in Iraq and beyond. Under a section titled “Creating Tomorrow’s Dominant Force,” the think tank wrote the following controversial line:

Further, the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event – like a new Pearl Harbor.

Less than a year later, 10 of the 18 men who signed the paper became members of the Bush administration. The attacks of 9/11 would come soon after and the neocons had their “catastrophic and catalyzing event” and an excuse to invade Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, and soon possibly, Iran. The men included Bush’s Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz, Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, John Bolton, Zalmay Khalilzad, the White House liaison to the Iraqi opposition; William Kristol, editor of the conservative Weekly Standard magazine, and Richard Perle, chairman of the advisory Defense Science Board.

In addition to the well-known Pearl Harbor quote, the paper goes on to describe the eventual outcome of the initial regime change. “Thus, this report advocates a two-stage process of change – transition and transformation – over the coming decades.” If the last 15 years of war, violence, and death in the Middle East have been the “transition” phase, John Bolton and Trump may be preparing to shift gears and move into the “transformation” phase – beginning with the invasion of Iran. However, based on PNAC’s track record, they might be looking for a new catastrophic event to generate support for intervention in Iran.

So much for draining the swamp…

On Wednesday the American Civil Liberties Union filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the Federal Bureau of Investigations in an effort to find out details on a little known tool the Bureau uses to assist the National Security Agency in gathering data about Americans.

The tool, known as “port readers”, are capable of copying emails and instant messages in real time. The tool is supposed to delete the contents of the emails and leave only the “metadata” for the government. The FBI is currently working to install port readers on the networks of large telecommunications companies. In the ACLU’s request they asked for more information on the port readers. Specifically, the civil liberties group is seeking information on what metadata is being collected, how many Internet and phone service providers have installed them, how much information is collected so far, and whether or not the FBI can guarantee that information is not permanently stored by the government.

While the ACLU attempts to force the government to release pertinent information on the technology, we can gather a sense of what is being collected. The port readers were first described in August 2013 when CNET reported that a former government official stated that within the Bureau the software was known as a “harvesting program”. Another industry insider told CNET that the readers were “an interception device by definition.”  AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Comcast, and Sprint declined to comment on the topic.

Foreign Policy also reported on the readers , stating that the FBI collects 13 separate fields of metadata. The exact fields and types of information are publicly unknown. We do know that the data can include the route a message takes over a network, IP addresses, and port numbers.

Hanni Fakhoury of the Electronic Frontier Foundation said, “The biggest fear is that the boxes are secretly storing something, or that they’re doing more than just simply allowing traffic to sift through and pulling out the routing information.”

So how do the port readers and the data collection happen without even a secret FISA court approval?

Using what are known as pen register and trap and trace orders large amounts of data can be intercepted with very little judicial oversight. The only requirement of a law enforcement officer making such an order is that the officer certify the results will be “relevant” to an investigation. Judges have stated in the past that they have almost no ability to deny pen register and trap and trace requests, and instead act as a rubber stamp for whatever is being requested.

The metadata collected can include IP addresses, Facebook correspondence, web site history, and more. However, with a pen register not all metadata is LEGALLY accessible. Although federal law says law enforcement can grab only “dialing, routing, addressing, or signaling information” without getting a court-approved wiretap, industry sources state that the FBI has configured its port reader to collect all metadata. This data collection would then render the programs, likely, illegal. This is yet another precarious legal gray area where data collection is concerned.

Although not much is known about port readers themselves there is some available data on the branch of the FBI carrying out the collection of information. Located at the Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia is the home of the FBI’s Operational Technology Division. Inside this compound is a mysterious organization called the Data Intercept Technology Unit or DITU. DITU handles the interception of data using the port readers.

Another interesting note is how the FBI and DITU assist the NSA with spying on Americans. The NSA is officially supposed to focus on international threats and not monitor activities of Americans. Whistleblower Edward Snowden obviously destroyed that myth last summer. However, DITU and the FBI still provide access to information that the NSA may not be able to access “legally”. Once the FBI’s port readers do their job, and DITU dissects the information, anything seen to be helpful can then be passed along to the NSA for further dissection and dissemination. All this seems to be operating under the guise of barely legal or outright flaunting of the law, both public law and leaked secret proceedings.
 

We live in an age where governments and private entities are becoming more and more engaged in monitoring and cataloguing of all aspects of daily life. Recent revelations have made it glaringly obvious to anyone paying attention that very little of our lives are “private” anymore. Free people should not be forced to sacrifice privacy in order to live and participate in the modern world. Stay vigilant and continue to spread awareness on the growing Surveillance State.

Earlier this month, the Electronic Frontier Foundation launched a new project designed to help educate communities about the growing list of surveillance tools deployed against the unsuspecting public. The EFF calls the new project the Street-Level Surveillance Project (SLS), which it describes as “a Web portal loaded with comprehensive, easy-to-access information on police spying tools like license plate readers, biometric collection devices, and ‘Stingrays.’”

The EFF has been involved in the fight against surveillance for 25 years, but with a massive influx of military equipment and surveillance tools to local police departments, it has never been more important to be aware of the growing Surveillance State. EFF Senior Staff Attorney Jennifer Lynch says the project “provides a simple but in-depth look at how these surveillance technologies work, who makes and uses them, and what kind of data they are collecting. We hope that community groups, advocacy organizations, defense attorneys, and individuals all take advantage of the information we’ve gathered.”

The SLS project hopes to educate users about the dangers of spying from law enforcement agencies at the federal, state, and local level. The privacy invasions include tracking cell phone calls, photographing our vehicles and following our driving patterns, taking our pictures in public places, and collecting our fingerprints and DNA.

“The public has heard or read so much about NSA spying, but there’s a real need for information and resources about surveillance tools being used by local law enforcement on our home turf. These technologies are often adopted in a shroud of secrecy, but communities deserve to understand these technologies and how they may be violating our rights,’’ said EFF activist Nadia Kayyali.

The Anti-Media works diligently to keep readers aware of the looming Surveillance State and any possible solutions. The Street Level Surveillance Project is one of those solutions. The website currently includes information on biometric technologies, which collect fingerprints, DNA, and face prints. It also details the use of automated license plate readers (ALPRs) — cameras mounted on patrol cars and on city streets that scan and record the plates of millions of cars across the country. In the coming months, more information will be added regarding cell site simulators, also known as “Stingrays.”

The website also includes explainers, FAQs, infographics, and links to EFF’s legal work in courts and legislatures. Under the “Resources” tab, there is also information for defense attorneys fighting surveillance cases, information on how to file a Freedom of Information (FOIA) request, and resources for community members fighting surveillance.

In the fight against oppression it is paramount that each individual find a method to contribute to the global awakening. Organizations like the EFF help fight the legal battles and provide resources such as the Street Level Surveillance project. At the same time, journalists at The Anti-Media and other organizations help spread the word. Now it is your turn, brothers and sisters. A report from the North Star Post has revealed the existence of a fleet of surveillance aircraft operated by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) that has been flying over various locations within the United States, as well as foreign destinations (the North Star Post is the publication started by journalist Sam Richards, who originally broke the story about the Federal Bureau of Investigations operating similar surveillance flights).

According to the North Star Post, the DEA does not obtain warrants for surveillance of public locations within the United States or in “foreign environments.”

The Post reports:

“The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is operating a fleet of surveillance aircraft over locations within the United States as well as ‘foreign environments,’” according to Jeffrey Stramm, a special agent in charge of DEA aviation division.

The Administration does not “get warrants for public space surveillance,” Stramm said in a phone call with The Post. He went on to say this surveillance program is “in accordance with Title 21 United States Code.”

Although Stramm would not confirm the number of aircraft that make up the fleet, The Post’s investigation identified 92 aircraft as of 2011. According to an Office of the Inspector General (OIG) report, the FY2010 budget for DEA aviation operations was $47.6 million. The report also stated that the DEA employed 108 Special Agent Pilots as of June 2011.

The report found the DEA has registered 30 aircraft to a post office box in Houston, Texas under the corporation “Silver Creek Aviation Services.” Other than the P.O. box and the registration, there is no proof the company actually exists. This would match previous reports that revealed the FBI was also operating surveillance flights registered under fake company names such as “FVX Research.”

Following the revelations on FBI surveillance flights, the bureau held a confidential briefing with Congress to explain the program. Government officials present at the briefing told the AP the operation was standard operating procedure and had only been used five times in five years. Despite the program being unclassified, the FBI declined to release details on how many spy planes are in operation. The bureau did reveal that around 85 percent of the aircraft use infrared cameras. The remaining 15 percent use binoculars for surveillance.

Regarding the DEA flights, Stramm told the Post that registering planes under fake companies provides “a level of protection” against “the bad guys.” Unfortunately, the DEA’s aviation division does not allow their aircraft information to be tracked by air traffic sites, so the locations of the flights are relatively unknown. Because of this, it is relatively difficult to ascertain what type of surveillance equipment was attached to the planes. The Post did report that photos of DEA planes appear to show cell site simulator technology, or advanced imaging technology, attached to the body of the aircraft. This would confirm suspicions that these aircraft are outfitted with cell phone surveillance tools known as “Stingrays” or “Dirt Boxes.”

In late 2014, the Wall Street Journal revealed the existence of a cell phone monitoring program operated by the U.S. Marshals Service using small planes. The program involved the Marshals using Cessna planes mounted with Stingrays (for more information check out this Guide to Stingray Technology).

In response to the spy plane revelations, the ACLU filed a Freedom of Information request with the FBI, DEA, and U.S. Marshals Service seeking information about these flights. They also filed a FOIA request with the FAA to attempt to obtain the flight plans.

While the public remains largely ignorant of the extreme level of surveillance in the United States, the situation seems to be escalating quickly. Jay Stanley of the American Civil Liberties Union believes the technology could already be used in tandem with drone aircraft. The results he said, would be a “nightmare scenario for drones: wide-area mass surveillance and location tracking of entire cities and towns.”

“I wrote recently about ARGUS, the high-flying drone technology capable of capturing super-high-definition video of a 15-square mile area and automatically tracking all moving vehicles and people within that area,” he said.

Now that the DEA’s surveillance flights have been revealed, Americans have an even clearer picture of the Surveillance State. Planes operated by federal agencies using fake companies are flying above American skies, possibly using infrared imaging, stingrays, or drones to monitor the movements and gather cellphone information from the unaware public below. Following the first ever congressional hearing on “Stingray” cellphone surveillance, new details reveal the Secret Service and the Internal Revenue Service are also using the controversial spying devices.

At a congressional hearing last Wednesday, officials with the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security released new details about the federal government’s use of “Stingray” cellphone surveillance. Stingrays, also known as cell site simulators, constitute another example of military tools finding their way into the hands of federal agencies and local police departments across the United States.

According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation:

The Stingray is a brand name of an IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) Catcher targeted and sold to law enforcement. A Stingray works by masquerading as a cellphone tower – to which your mobile phone sends signals to every 7 to 15 seconds whether you are on a call or not – and tricks your phone into connecting to it.  As a result, the government can figure out who, when and to where you are calling, the precise location of every device within the range, and with some devices, even capture the content of your conversations.

Elana Tyrangiel, a deputy assistant attorney at the Justice Department, told lawmakers the particular cell site simulators employed by the DOJ do not collect the content of calls. The devices do, however, collect location and the number being dialed.

Much of the discussion at the hearing centered around the use of warrants. In early September, the Justice Department announced rules about how the department will handle the use of Stingrays, including new warrant requirements. After the rules were announced, Senator Patrick Leahy, the ranking member on the Senate’s Judiciary Committee, challenged the warrant exemptions and the overall effectiveness of the rules.  According to the District Sentinel, Leahy stated, “I will press the Department to justify them.”

As of last week, the Department of Homeland Security is now following similar rules. Officials warned Congress the devices would be used without obtaining warrants in “time-sensitive, emergency situations.”

California Congressman Ted Lieu, a member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, told CNN he believes “The mass surveillance of peoples’ [sic] cell phone signals requires a warrant.”

The AP reports that during the hearing, Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Seth M. Stodder revealed a new policy that allows the Secret Service to use cell site simulators without a warrant if they believe there is a “nonspecific threat to the president or another protected person.”

Stodder stated that under “exceptional circumstances,” exceptions would be made and use of the device would only require approval from “executive-level personnel” at Secret Service headquarters and the U.S. attorney for the relevant jurisdiction. Despite the exemption, Stodder said the Secret Service would not use the devices in routine criminal investigations.

Just days after the congressional hearing, The Guardian has revealed the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is also making use of the Stingray devices. The Guardian reports:

Invoices obtained following a request under the Freedom of Information Act show purchases made in 2009 and 2012 by the federal tax agency with Harris Corporation, one of a number of companies that manufacture the devices. Privacy advocates said the revelation “shows the wide proliferation of this very invasive surveillance technology.

The 2009 IRS/Harris Corp invoice is mostly redacted under section B(4) of the Freedom of Information Act, which is intended to protect trade secrets and privileged information. However, an invoice from 2012, which is also partially redacted, reports that the agency spent $65,652 on upgrading a Stingray II to a HailStorm, a more powerful version of the same device, as well as $6,000 on training from Harris Corporation.

The HailStorm is an upgraded version of the Stingray, which is capable of gathering the actual contents of conversations and images in addition to gathering location and numbers dialed.

The history of the use of Stingrays is filled with secrecy, lies, and redacted documents. The FBI, the Harris Corporation, and local police departments continue to hide the details of how exactly the devices are being used. Should we trust government officials when they tell us they will get a warrant unless “exceptional circumstances” arise? Who defines what exactly “exceptional” means anyway? It would be wise for all those who value privacy and freedom to begin challenging the official narrative and investing in technologies that can counter the State’s surveillance.

We should also take a moment to acknowledge all the activists and journalists who have been working to expose this issue for the last several years. As Christopher Soghoian, an ACLU technologist, pointed out, “This is the first ever congressional hearing on Stingrays. This is a device the FBI started using in 1995. It shouldn’t take 20 years to get a hearing on a surveillance technology.”

It is through the work of the awakened masses that the collective springs into action. Without YOU spreading information through the internet and in the streets, this important topic would not have become part of the national dialogue. However, we must not rest. According to a new study published in the journal General Dentistry infants are at risk of dental fluorosis due to overexposure from fluoride in commercially available infant foods.

The researchers analyzed 360 different samples of 20 different foods ranging from fruits and vegetables, chicken, turkey, beef, and vegetarian dinners. All of the foods tested had detectable amounts of fluoride ranging from .007-4.13 micrograms of fluoride per gram of food. Chicken products had the highest concentrations of fluoride, followed by turkey.

The New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation (NYSCOF) reports that the fluoride levels were due to pesticides, fertilizers, soil, groundwater, and/or fluoridated water. The high levels found in the chicken and turkey can be attributed to “fluoride-saturated bone dust” involved in the process of mechanically separating the meat.

Based on the study, consuming more than one serving per day of the high fluoride concentration foods would put children beyond the recommended daily fluoride intake. Babies given high amounts of fluoride can experience white spotted, yellow, brown or pitted teeth, known as dental fluorosis. An excessive intake of fluoride can also lead to acute fluoride toxicity. Since the symptoms of toxicity mimic other common illnesses such as the flu or upset stomach many people may not recognize fluoride as the culprit.

According to the Journal of Public Health Dentistry:

Estimating the incidence of toxic fluoride exposures nationwide also is complicated by the existence of biases. Parents or caregivers may not notice the symptoms associated with mild fluoride toxicity or may attribute them to colic or gastroenteritis, particularly if they did not see the child ingest fluoride. Similarly, because of the nonspecific nature of mild to moderate symptoms, a physician’s differential diagnosis is unlikely to include fluoride toxicity without a history of fluoride ingestion. Shulman JD, Wells LM. (1997). Acute fluoride toxicity from ingesting home-use dental products in children, birth to 6 years of age. Journal of Public Health Dentistry 57: 150-8.

The Institute of Medicine recommends children 2 to 3 years old only receive fluoride up to .7 mg from all sources. Even if a parent does give their child less than .7 mg of fluoride through their toothpaste (assuming no more is swallowed) it would be rather difficult to avoid the many other sources of fluoride presently found in the United States, primarily through municipal water supplies.

As soon as a parent washes their child’s mouth with sink water they have just increased their child’s chance of acute fluoride toxicity. Add a soda, canned food, shower, or infant food into the mix (all sources of fluoride) and you have an overexposure to the substance and possibility of acute fluoride toxicity. With the American Dental Association recently recommending fluoride toothpaste to children at the first sight of a tooth, it would seem difficult for a parent to guarantee amount of fluoride their child is receiving from such varied sources.

The substances added to municipal water supplies known by the name fluoride are actually a combination of unpurified by products of phosphate mining, namely hydrofluorosilicic acid, sodium fluorosilicate, and sodium fluoride. In the United States thousands of tons of fluorosilicic acid is recovered from phosphoric acid plants and then used for water fluoridation. During this process the fluoride ion is created.

This process of taking waste from the phosphate industry and putting it into drinking water has long been criticized for it’s effects on human health, and that of the environment. It is well known that water fluoridation has led to dental fluorosis for millions of children. This discoloring of the teeth was called “cosmetically objectionable” by the Centers for Disease Control. Beyond the cosmetic effect there have been a number of studies indicating health issues ranging from arthritis, brain problems, reduced thyroid or overactive thyroid, kidney problems and bone cancers.

While proponents of water fluoridation have long pointed to an apparent drop in tooth decay in fluoridated nations as proof of it’s validity, those claims have been proven wrong by the World Health Organization. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has stated the fluoride in the water is directly related to better teeth quality however, the WHO released it’s own study showing that tooth decay rates have dropped in all western nations, whether fluoridated or not.

In early November, our friends at The Free Thought Project ran an article titled, “Groundbreaking Discovery: Man Solves Tesla’s Secret To Amplifying Power By Nearly 5,000%.” This piece generated a reasonable amount of traffic — and controversy.

TFTP interviewed Jim Murray, a man who claimed to have saved the secrets of Nikola Tesla’s technology. Murray is an engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur who has had a lifelong interest in science, radios, and rocket technology. According to TFTP:

It was not long after graduation that Jim began seriously examining the work of Nikola Tesla. He was fascinated by Tesla’s incredible claims concerning power generation and transmission, and he vowed to rediscover the great scientist’s undisclosed secrets. Jim’s efforts eventually led him to individuals like Otis T. Carr, who claimed to have known Tesla personally. They also gave him a greater understanding of several lost Tesla secrets.

During his professional life, Jim has conducted research and experimentation on a variety of different technological applications all of which eventually contributed to the development of his SERPS (Switched Energy Resonance Power Supply) device. This highly specialized electronic circuit has the ability to “Magnify” the effective power applied to it by nearly 50 times. When Jim coupled his device with his friend Paul Babcock’s patented ultra fast 5 nanosecond switching technology, they achieved a 4790% increase in electrical power compared to the input. This type of performance, if commercialized, would cause the largest electric utility companies to shake in their boots.

Once TFTP’s initial story broke, I reached out to their team to see if I could arrange an interview with Jim Murray regarding some of the questions supporters and critics were asking.

In an update to the story, TFTP wrote:

The underground sewers of the interwebz drudged up an obituary of another man named ‘James Murray,’ who had recently died. The internet warriors claimed that since the man was from Oklahoma and had worked for an electric company, it had to be the same Jim Murray. Therefore, our website had published a ‘lie.’ Since we had set up a GoFundMe for Jim to raise money to publish his next book, it meant that our crowdfunding efforts were actually a scam and a ‘money grab.’

The obituary of James Murray did, indeed, cause quite a stir, and was one of the main reasons I personally wanted to speak with him. As my interview confirms, Jim Murray is alive and well. One consequence of this rumor was that a crowdfunding page in support of Jim Murray was taken down after the accusations of fraud spread across the Internet. The page had been launched by TFTP to support Jim Murray’s efforts to write a book about his experience and the technology.

“Instead of contacting me, and saying ‘Hey, are you really dead?’ They just unceremoniously took it down,” Murray said. “I’ll get the book done one way or another, it’s just that a few bucks would have helped.”

Murray also explained why some of Tesla’s ideas are not accepted by the current scientific establishment. The engineer previously gave TFTP a look at his new technology, but I wanted him to discuss the public and establishment’s reluctance to believe in alternative forms of power.

“Ultimately, what needs to be done is somebody has to put up enough money, and we’re talking millions, to really break through the restraints of the existing paradigm when it comes to understanding energy and nonlinear physics,” Murray told Anti-Media.

“The government doesn’t have any problem doing it themselves, but the vested interests don’t want the general public to get ahold of this because the resulting paradigm shift would be pretty excruciating, at least for those who are doing well with the current arrangement.” Murray also said he would not be surprised to find out “certain factions” of either the U.S. government or other governments are already working on this technology but “keeping a lid on it.”

Despite the first crowdfunding campaign’s removal, a second campaign has been launched. Jim Murray says he has independently secured funding for his technology and is now trying to obtain resources to publish a book that will explain to everyone how it works.

For the skeptics out there, I recommend watching my interview, as well as the interview with The Free Thought Project before drawing any conclusions. I will admit that personally, I am not 100% convinced, though that may only be because a lack of understanding. I would also like to add that Jim Murray seems open to communication. If you have questions for him, I recommend reaching out to him and asking for yourself.

Regardless of whether you think Murray is the new Tesla or another snake oil salesman trying to make a buck, it should be perfectly obvious that the world’s current energy practices are unsustainable. Alternative fuels and energy projects are rarely taken seriously. Instead, the world continues to march down an unsustainable path of environmental destruction and degradation; but this is not necessarily the will of the people.

This is the design of corporate and state power, which benefits by shackling the world to the current energy paradigm. If we wish to break free of these chains, we must continue to pursue knowledge and tread in areas deemed “crazy” or “conspiratorial” in order to sift through the lies in search of the truth. Only by being willing to challenge the status quo will we create new systems that honor the individual, respect the planet, and allow freedom and happiness to flourish.

On Monday the Supreme Court declined to hear a petition from the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) that sought to force the Department of Homeland Security to release details of a secret “killswitch” protocol to shut down cellphone and Internet service during emergencies.

EPIC has been fighting since 2011 to release the details of the program, which is known as Standard Operating Procedure 303. EPIC writes, “On March 9, 2006, the National Communications System (‘NCS’) approved SOP 303, however it was never released to the public. This secret document codifies a ‘shutdown and restoration process for use by commercial and private wireless networks during national crisis.’”

EPIC continues, “In a 2006-2007 Report, the President’s National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (‘NSTAC’) indicated that SOP 303 would be implemented under the coordination of the National Coordinating Center (‘NCC’) of the NSTAC, while the decision to shut down service would be made by state Homeland Security Advisors or individuals at DHS. The report indicates that NCC will determine if a shutdown is necessary based on a ‘series of questions.’”

Despite EPIC’s defeat at the hands of the Supreme Court, the four-year court battle yielded a heavily redacted copy of Standard Operating Procedure 303.

The fight for transparency regarding SOP 303 began shortly after a Bay Area Rapid Transit (“BART”) officer in San Francisco shot and killed a homeless man named Charles Hill on July 3, 2011. The shooting sparked massive protests against BART throughout July and August 2011. During one of these protests, BART officials cut off cell phone service inside four transit stations for three hours. This kept anyone on the station platform from sending or receiving phone calls, messages, or other data.

In July 2012, EPIC submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the DHS seeking the full text of Standard Operating Procedure 303; the full text of the predetermined “series of questions” that determines if a shutdown is necessary; and any executing protocols related to the implementation of Standard Operating Procedure 303, distributed to DHS, other federal agencies, or private companies.

After the DHS fought the FOIA releases, a district court in Washington, D.C. ruled in EPIC’s favor, but that ruling was later overturned by the court of appeals. The appeals court told EPIC the government was free to withhold details of the plan under the Freedom of Information Act because the information might “endanger” the public.  In 2015, the digital rights group asked the Supreme Court to review the ruling by the federal appeals court.

With the Supreme Court’s refusal to address EPIC’s petition, the issue seems to have reached a dead-end. The American people are (once again) left in the dark regarding the inner-workings of another dangerous and intrusive government program. It is only through the hard work of activists and groups like EPIC that we are at least aware of the existence of this program — but knowing bits and pieces about the protocol is not enough. In order to combat such heavy-handed measures, we need to have access to the government’s own documents. Hopefully, there is already a whistleblower preparing to release these details.

What we do with the information we do have is up to each of us as individuals. We can sit back and watch the United States further devolve into a militarized police and surveillance state — or we can spread this information, get involved locally, and create new systems outside of the current paradigm of control and exploitation.

In a rare victory against the secrecy that often shrouds state surveillance, a Cook County, Illinois judge has ordered the Chicago Police Department to allow her to review documents related to cellphone surveillance tools, which are sometimes known as “Stingrays.”

The ruling comes after Chicago activist Freddy Martinez filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with the CPD in 2014. Martinez was attempting to gain information regarding when, where, how, and why Chicago police deploy the Stingrays. Martinez is also attempting to reveal what type of legal authorization is required to use the devices, as well as what happens once cellphone data is collected.

Anti-Media has reported extensively on Stingray, the brand name of a popular cell-site simulator manufactured by the Harris Corporation. The Electronic Frontier Foundation describes Stingray as “a brand name of an IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) Catcher targeted and sold to law enforcement. A Stingray works by masquerading as a cellphone tower – to which your mobile phone sends signals to every 7 to 15 seconds whether you are on a call or not – and tricks your phone into connecting to it.”

As a result, whoever is in possession of a Stingray can figure out who, when, and where a target is calling, as well as the precise location of every device within the range. With some devices, it can even capture the content of conversations.

Both Harris Corp. and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) require police to sign non-disclosure agreements (NDA) related to the use of the devices. Through these NDAs, local police departments have become subordinate to Harris, and even in court cases in front of a judge, they are not allowed to speak about the details of their arrangements.

Due to this secrecy, very little has been known about how exactly the Stingrays work. Last month, Anti-Media reported on the release of Stingray manuals from an unknown whistleblower. The leak has helped shine a light on how the devices operate, but there is still very little information available. The little we do know was disclosed through open records requests and lawsuits filed by journalists and researchers like Freddy Martinez.

After Martinez filed his FOIA request, the CPD refused to provide any information, claiming revealing the data would give criminals critical information on the technology. CPD also said releasing information could possibly justify law enforcement investigations. Thankfully, Judge Kathleen Kennedy disagreed.

On Monday, Judge Kennedy ruled the CPD’s argument was too vague. Judge Kennedy wrote:

In his affidavit, SSA [Supervisory Special Agent Bradley] Morrison details FBI policy regarding the protection of any information regarding cell site simulators and issues why the disclosure of ‘even minor details’ about the use of cell site simulators can be detrimental to law enforcement efforts and public safety. However, SSA Morrison fails to mention specifically any of the documents or materials at issue in this case, nor does he profess to know any specifics about defendant’s use of this technology.

Judge Kennedy also rejected the CPD’s argument that cell site simulators should be treated like traditional pen register or trap-and-trace devices, which log incoming and outgoing numbers — but not the detailed information the Stingrays are capable of gathering. Judge Kennedy continued:

The record reflects that IMSI [international mobile subscriber identity] catchers, also known as cell site simulators or Stingrays, can capture a cellphone’s unique serial number, its location, and the content of calls, text messages, and webpages visited. Because IMSI catchers’ capabilities are broader, it is improper to equate them to and treat them as pen registers and trap and trace devices.

The judge ordered the CPD to turn over the requested documents for an “in camera review” by January 25. At that point, she will decide if any of the records are eligible for public release or if the Chicago police can maintain their secrecy.

Freddy Martinez spoke with Ars Technica via encrypted chat about the documents he is seeking and what he expects from Judge Kennedy’s ruling. “Last time we started with eight and got 200 but this one I expect will be much bigger,” Martinez said.

A new report detailing the possibility of voter fraud during the Minnesota primary is creating quite a stir among various Internet forums and social media sites.

An anonymous poster on Medium has released a controversial, and possibly damning report, which details a number of unexplained phenomena related to the “Super Tuesday” Minnesota primary results.

“Simple summary, I’ve found evidence that I believe points to rigged machines casting votes according to numbers decided before polls even opened, which gave Rubio his win. I really hope I’m wrong, and can post that this was all a mistake. Read on for details,” the author writes.

Much of the details of this particular theory require knowledge of computer programming that might be beyond comprehension for the average person but please push through and read this story. If there is yet more evidence that elections in America can be rigged or altered in some way we must work to expose it.

First, our writer points out that the Minnesota Republican Party released the results of the primary as a PDF which contained the phrase “Operation Malayan Water Monitor.” Certain corners of the Internet have speculated that this phrase could have been code for “Marco Wins Minnesota,” as presidential candidate Marco Rubio defeated Donald Trump in Minnesota despite Trump being the predicted winner.

This incident alone is not enough to indicate any wrongdoing but the situation gets even more odd. As the author points out, a Google search of “Operation Malayan Water Monitor” shows a PDF that does link back to the Minnesota Primary results. The author continues with some more interesting details:

Now, some of you may be asking me why the hell I’m making a big deal out of election results posted on a party’s website. After all, that’s basically the point of Super Tuesday, and it was my question, too. Until I noticed that the WordPress URL contained the string “/2016/02/”. That means that these files, including the 92% turnout one, were all uploaded in February.

Super Tuesday is on the first day of March.

Another example of timing not matching up is the fact that the Minnesota GOP website shows the Preliminary Results posted as of February 29, 2016, a full day before the results were supposed to come in. Now, some of you may be thinking, “Well, perhaps the Minnesota GOP created the file in February to be prepared for the results.” It does make sense that the web page would be built and ready ahead of the March 1st primary instead of the actual day, but this situation keeps getting weirder.

I should note that the rest of the author’s piece delves into speculation and theory but even without the hard evidence needed to make a case in a court of law, we can absolutely draw some conclusions based on the available information.

The author writes, “So, back on MN GOP’s website, there’s an embedded YouTube video explaining how to caucus. Pretty basic stuff, but there’s something in the background that’s important.” The email address in the video is steve@hotmail.com. The author does a good job of establishing that the email address is in fact in use and has been for at least three years. This is where it gets interesting.

Steve at hotmail dot com posted a question on a forum ran by a company called KoreLogic. “KoreLogic, the company running this forum, is a well known cyber-security contractor, and no unfamiliar name to me, I watch talks where their researchers present and I’ve seen their name on paper,” the author wrote.

The author was able to find a presentation given by KoreLogic. KoreLogic has worked closely with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). DARPA is well known for investing in and creating covert intelligence gathering technologies, as well as the next generation of war weapons. As the slides from the presentation show, KoreLogic is totally capable of hacking and exploiting computer programs like the ones used for counting votes.

This slide actually lists Diebold voting machines under servers that have been compromised.

The author continues,

Now, I don’t know how many caucuses use machines or how the votes are counted, or how many steps it takes to get from a caucus ballot to a computerized result, but I assume there’s a machine somewhere along the way. My primary cause for concern here is that Minnesota’s secretary of state asked for new voting machines this year, and Diebold likely picked up the contract.

Perhaps there are too many “what-ifs” and speculation for you to believe in “Operation Malayan Water Monitor,” but at the least this story reminds us how vulnerable electronic voting is to hacking and manipulation. Minnesota is running voting machines that are capable of being exploited by hacking firms like KoreLogic, as well as any other independent actor with the skills. This should be a reminder to all Americans that not only is the political system corrupt beyond repair or reform, but the entire process of voting for a president is likely a highly orchestrated charade.
