It is a circumstance unparalleled in American history.

Two weeks after a gunman started pouring down fire from a 32nd floor window in Las Vegas on people at a country music festival, police and the FBI remain in the dark over why he did it—and why he stopped.

The tragedy hit with no warning and took fifty-nine of our number. And despite being recorded in real time on thousands of cellphones, there is still no explanation for it.

The motivation of the shooter (or shooters’) remains a mystery. Hopefully it was more than petulance.

But we don’t know.

Given the circumstances, you don’t need to be a “conspiracy theorist” to sense something hinky about the official investigation into the Las Vegas Massacre.

In the absence of any sort of coherent narrative, both concerned citizens and ‘conspiracy theorists’—and good luck telling them apart—are attempting to augment the official FBI investigation, such as it is, by crowd-sourcing clues with friends on the internet.

Admittedly, it isn’t much. But, at the moment, it’s all we’ve got.

The airport where three of the four terrorist pilots in the 9/11 attack learned to fly was a hub of operations in the 1970’s and early ‘80’s for “The Company,” an international drug smuggling organization headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky and Mena, Arkansas.

Led by a mysterious Cuban exile, who used the alias “Frank Guzman,” The Company’s contingent at the Venice Airport numbered as many as a dozen pilots and associates. The Company began receiving national attention in the early 1980’s.

“The Company,” whose name is a commonly-used euphemism for the CIA, was profiled in Sally Denton’s best-selling book “The Blue-Grass Conspiracy,” which raised pointed questions about the involvement of the CIA with the group.

The DEA carried out no investigation into two American-registered planes busted in Mexico’s Yucatan carrying more than ten tons of cocaine. The reason, a top DEA official in Miami told us, was that the planes belonged to a “rogue” U.S. Customs operation, and any investigation would rightly be the purview of the Office of the Inspector General of the Cabinet Department under which U.S. Customs operates, the Dept. of Homeland Security.

The name of the operation in question is Operation Blue Lightning.

A U.S. Customs Agent on duty when controversial drug pilot and “soldier of fortune” Michael Brassington attempted to re-enter the US through Fort Lauderdale International Airport in April of 2004 was instructed by a Supervisor at Immigrations & Customs Enforcement (ICE) to treat Brassington — a long-time employee and business associate of Wallace J. Hilliard, owner of the flight school that taught Mohamed Atta to fly - as a “grave threat to national security.” The news comes as the former Guyanese military pilot prepares to go on trial in a Federal Courthouse in Newark next month for recklessly endangering the lives of passengers, whose number includes ex-Presidents George Herbert Walker Bush and Bill Clinton as well as numerous celebrities. The disclosure, from a soon-to-be-released documentary, “The New American Drug Lords,” is a reminder, more than eight years later, of the unfinished nature of the investigation into the 9/11 attack.

Just as he said he would, Ruth got rich after returning from Cuba, where a report from the Sheriff of Sarasota County to the Tampa office of the FBI said he took part in the assassination of one of “four or five” men involved in the assassination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

How Stephen Ruth went from being a hired assassin for the CIA to owing back taxes of almost $1 million is the story of the uncontested and uncontrolled growth of the National Security State in the United States of America.

How Ruth made big bucks didn't take a genius, just someone connected, and comes as no big surprise. Like Barry Seal before him he merely applied military cargo-type aircraft to the logistical problem of transporting illegal narcotics from areas of production to areas of consumption.

He provided, in other words, a service which no one but CIA-connected individuals was able to offer without the constant risk of discovery.

In other words, Gary Webb was right.

Eight years after terrorist ringleader Mohamed Atta practiced ‘touch & go’s’ off the runway at the Venice Municipal Airport, the men he did business with there have not been called to account for running a continuing criminal enterprise at the same time their two flight schools, in Naples and Venice FL, were being used to teach a still-unknown number of suspected terrorists to fly.

The continuing criminal enterprise at the Venice Airport helmed by Rudi Dekkers and Wallace J. Hilliard has been an open secret, according to numerous Southwest Florida aviation executives.

Should they ever be exposed to full public view, they would utterly discredit the official story being told about why the terrorist pilots were in Venice Florida, and what they were doing while they were there.

Few, however, think either man will ever be called to account.

A fierce war being waged for control of the Venice Municipal Airport has led to the discovery of covert CIA and military operations, dating back to at least 1959, which go well beyond what was previously known to have taken place there.

Operations at the Venice Airport have involved individuals whose names figure prominently in the Kennedy Assassination, for example Texas oilman General D. H. (Harry) Byrd, owner of a defense contractor which in the late 50's and early 60's built and launched Regulus II cruise missiles from the beach directly in front of the Venice Airport in a program run out of at Eglin AFB in Florida’s panhandle.

General Byrd, of course, was the owner of the Texas School Book Depository in Dallas, where the Warren Commission alleged Lee Harvey Oswald fired the shots which killed President John F. Kennedy.

Byrd also ran the Texas and Louisiana Civil Air Patrol, at the same time cadets Barry Seal and Lee Harvey Oswald were meeting Kennedy assassination conspirator Capt. David Ferrie at a two-week summer camp of the Louisiana Civil Air Patrol at Barksdale Air Force Base in July of 1955.
