Starbucks has apologized to a Latino customer in California after an employee was accused of printing a racial slur on his coffee cup.

The customer, who goes by Pedro (though a friend also refers to him as Peter in one report) had purchased an iced coffee from a Starbucks in the city of La Cañada Flintridge on his way to work Tuesday, KTLA reports.

Upon arriving at work, however, the man’s co-worker spotted the word “beaner” where his name should have been written on the cup.

Pedro’s co-worker, Priscilla Hernandez, said she called up Starbucks to complain on his behalf, only to be told the employee had not understood the name Pedro had given, The New York Post reports.

Hernandez then followed up on Twitter (the post has since been deleted) and the company responded by telling Hernandez they had reached out to her co-worker directly.

“Thank you for letting us know, Priscilla. This is not the welcoming experience we aim to provide, and we have reached out to this customer to apologize and make this right,” a Starbucks representative named Ryan tweeted in response.

A spokesperson for Starbucks further confirmed to Fox News that the company apologized to the customer in person.

"Our leadership team met with the customer Thursday morning at one of our local stores in the area and he accepted our apology," said Starbucks in a statement to Fox News. "This kind of mistake is unacceptable, and we will take additional steps to assess what happened here and how our partners can be better."

Hernandez later confirmed on Twitter that Starbucks has been in contact with her and her co-worker.

Meanwhile, a friend of Pedro’s tells KTLA he’s been “sad” about the issue.

The coffee cup controversy comes just over a month after two black men were arrested for trespassing at a Starbucks in Philadelphia while they were waiting for a friend. Starbucks has since apologized for the incident, and the city of Philadelphia settled with the men for the sum of $1, plus a grant for the funding of an entrepreneurship program in the mens' names.

In response, Starbucks will also be closing over 8,000 of its locations on the afternoon of May 29 to conduct “racial bias training.”

While Starbucks might seem like a staple in U.S., the Seattle-based coffee chain is about to become even more popular abroad, as the company just announced it plans to nearly double the number of stores in China over the next five years.  

Earlier this week, Starbucks Corporation held its first-ever China investors conference in Shanghai, where it unveiled plans to expand its presence in the country by 2022.

The fast-paced strategy entails opening a new store every 15 hours over the next five years, increasing the current number from 3,300 to 6,000 across 89 more cities.

Starbucks also hopes to more than triple revenue and double the operating income in China in the same time frame, according to a press release.

“No Western company or brand is better positioned to evolve with the rapidly expanding Chinese middle class – and we continue to mindfully evolve a coffee culture in China where the reward will be healthy, long-term, profitable growth for decades to come. We are committed to long-term investment in China,” Kevin Johnson, Starbucks president and chief executive officer, said in a statement.

To kick things off, next month the company plans to open a new multilevel flagship-style store in Beijing, which will be its largest store globally besides the so-called Starbucks Reserve Roasteries. One of such roasteries opened in Shanghai to great succes just six months ago.

A coffee chain in California is being praised on social media for its response to a man making Islamophobic comments to a woman wearing a headscarf.

The altercation reportedly took place at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf on Friday when a man made a racist remark to a Muslim woman standing behind him in line.

In a video recording of the incident, which was posted on Twitter by journalist CJ Werleman, the Muslim woman asks the man what he said.

“I said, is this Halloween or something?” the man repeated.

The woman asks him why he would say that, to which the man responds “Why do you think I would say that?”

The woman then asks the man if he knows she is Muslim, and if he has a problem with that.

“I don’t like it, that’s why. I don’t like your religion, it says to kill me, and I don’t want to be killed. How’s that?” he responds in the video.

The response leads to a hostile back-and-forth with the woman asking if the man has read the Koran, which he said he has “read enough of it.”

The two continue to yell as the man moves away, saying he doesn’t “want to talk” to the woman anymore as she paraphrases what seems to be Luke 19:27 from the Bible.

An employee tries to separate the two and eventually a woman, who identifies herself as the supervisor of the coffee shop, asks the man to leave.

“Why are you not serving him?” the woman asks the supervisor.

“Because he is disrupting a public place and being very racist,” she says.

The supervisor’s actions are now being hailed on Twitter.

Some have even compared the coffee house to Starbucks, where two black men were arrested last month while waiting for a business partner.

Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf was not immediately available for comment.

Two baristas at a Duke University coffee shop were fired for playing rap music that contained "offensive" lyrics and prompted a school official's complaint.

Britni Brown and Kevin Simmons were working at the campus location of Joe Van Gogh when Vice President for Student Affairs Larry Moneta came into the establishment. When he overheard the song "Get Paid" by Young Dolph, which includes the lyrics “Get paid, young n----, get paid” and “I f----d her so good,” he complained to Brown about the “inappropriate” song, Indy Week reports.

Brown reportedly apologized and turned off the music then offered Moneta a muffin on the house, though he insisted on paying. Simmons, who overheard the exchange between Brown and Moneta, said Moneta was “verbally harassing” his co-worker.

Shortly after Moneta left the shop, the baristas received a phone call from the store owner, who said Executive Director of Dining Services Robert Coffey had called him about the music.

On Monday morning, Brown and Simmons were called into a meeting with someone from HR who told themthey could either resign or be fired, according to an audio recording of the meeting obtained by Indy Week.

“We had gotten a call from Robert Coffey of Duke saying that the VP of the university had come into the shop and that there was vulgar music playing,” the HR rep, Amanda Wiley said on the recording. “Duke University has instructed us to terminate the employees that were working that day.”

Moneta told The Chronicle in an email that while he did complain about the music, he never ordered the employees be fired.

"The employees who chose to play the song in a business establishment on the Duke campus made a poor decision which was conveyed to the JVG management," Moneta wrote. "How they responded to the employees’ behavior was solely at their discretion."

"To those who feel that I’ve flipped on my positions on free expression, I say this. The artist who wrote, recorded and performed the music is absolutely entitled to do so, however offensive I might find the lyrics.”

"There are other options besides being terminated,” Brown said in the meeting with HR, according to Indy Week. “We could have just been moved to another shop. But Duke came in and took our livelihood.”

Something strange is brewing at this Starbucks location.

For the second time in less than two weeks, a hidden camera has been found in the bathroom at one of the coffee chain’s stores in Alpharetta, Georgia.

Police said Thursday a barista spotted the device underneath a baby changing station – the exact same location of the first camera, found by a customer on April 17.

"We're not sure if it's the person, or if it's a copycat," Alpharetta Police spokesman Howard Miller told Fox 5 Atlanta.

Police have also been investigating other businesses at the strip mall where the Starbucks is located to see if there are more hidden cameras, the station added.

It was not immediately clear how long the second camera was there before it was discovered. Police said the first camera had recorded around 25 videos, including several that reportedly showed people using the restroom.  

“We’ve learned that the device had about an hour’s worth of recorded video on it and detectives found 8 to 10 men and women videotaped while in that restroom,” one officer had told Fox 5 Atlanta. He added that the video quality was poor and no “private parts” were seen.

No suspects have been identified. Police say whoever is responsible faces a charge of eavesdropping, which is a felony.

"Since the original incident, we’ve increased [the] rate of bathroom checks to prevent any foul play,” Starbucks said in a statement in mid-April. “Our partners (employees) moved swiftly once they found the device and called law enforcement."
