GENERAL SAN MARTIN, Argentina - Another animal was found mutilated this weekend, this time in a field adjacent to the community of General San Martin, belonging to Julio Zurbirgk, who believes the perpetrators are not human.

The bovine, a black Aberdeen Angus cow, showing the tell-tale signs of mutilation, was found over the weekend in a ranch some 15 kilometers south of the town by the property's owner.

According to Zurbrigk, the animal was missing its anus, tongue, eyes and jaws, displaying perfectly cauterized incisions. It was a cow about to give birth and in perfect health. The fetus remained inside it.

According to the livestock farmer: "Aliens were involved, without a doubt. This has been going for over 20 years and no one has offered any solutions. They must remove the organs aboard the spacecraft, because there was nothing strange to be found around the animal. One can also see that they must throw the animals from their craft, because they land with their legs backward."

He added that other animals avoid coming within 50 meters of the mutilated cow. "These cases are classic. I don't know how dogs are aware of them and come no closer."

He expressed surprise that no serious investigation had been conducted in this regard. "It's better that no investigation is performed than to do what they did years ago: put the blame on the red-muzzled mouse. Mice don't eat meat, for starters, and they don't exist. We have no doubt here that extraterrestrial beings are involved."

The summer of 2017 has been particularly active as regards aerial mysteries and unknown phenomena. The UFOs of yesterday remain as current as ever and materialize yet again to fill us with wonder and disbelief.

This is precisely how the protagonist of a UFO encounter in the locality of Brenes felt on the morning of August 2nd. It was something so incredible and unknown that she could hardly credit what he was seeing. Her name is Sandra and she witnessed something astonishing at 8:30 a.m.: "I was on my way to work and took my daughter over to my mother. It was then when I saw a light-emitting source in the sky. I can almost tell you that it was oval; issuing bright flashes even though it was daylight. The light was irregular and was in view for nearly a minute. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I watched it carefully and saw how its size decreased and became smaller until it disappeared."

Sandra, visibly excited, recalls every second of this sighting. "I'm not easily shocked. My partner and I love these subjects, and a while ago, we spent some time in Gibraltar and saw three lights that left our jaws hanging. But this morning's event has been truly impressive." The witness called another person - Jesús, a worker at a nearby bar, who jokingly said: "They're here!" but when he saw the luminous form, realized they were both looking at a truly extraordinary phenomenon.

Fernando Romero, driving from Tocina to Seville around the same time, also saw the mysterious object: "It was a large luminous form, a point of light that stood out in the sky, having the apparent size of a large marble. The object, or whatever it was, flew parallel to the horizon, slowly. I thought it was an airplane approaching Seville with its lights on, but when I looked more closely, I saw this wasn't the case. The light grew and shrank intermittently and stopped. It was very odd. Then, some thirty seconds later, it disappeared and left me stunned. I don't believe in this UFO and alien stuff, but I can tell you that was something very strange."

Confirmation of the nature of the sighting was sought with Seville Flight Control, which confirmed having no air traffic matching what was seen by the witnesses. The same happened with military flight controllers. No astronomical phenomenon matches the nature of this UFO sighting. Nor is the passage of International Space Station (ISS) a valid explanation. By strict definition, these witnesses saw a UFO.

The astronomical phenomena for the month of August will be the traditional "Lágrimas de San Lorenzo" (St. Lawrence's Tears) around the 12th (Perseids), also bearing in mind the partial lunar eclipse on the 7th of this month. The UFO phenomenon remains present in the heavens over Seville. It is a timeless phenomenon that appears before witnesses at any time of day and which can shatter preconceived notions about "things seen in the sky whose real nature we do not know". The Brenes UFO almost surely marks the start of other sightings in Seville.

Several lights were seen in the skies over Salto during the massive blackout that affected - and affects - a considerable part of northern Uruguay's territory, according to statements made by residents of Salto, Constitución, Belén, and part of Bella Unión as well as Paysandú.

Strange lights were seen forming the shape of a triangle, holding their position for far longer than a helicopter or aircraft would, adding to this the fact that the lights were considerably bright and were separated from each other by a broad distance, according to eyewitness statements.

The Uruguayan Air Force was the first in Latin America to create a UFO research commission 32 years ago. Several factors must be discounted when confirming an object as a UFO. The Uruguayan Air Force (FAU) created the Comisión Receptora e Investigadora de Denuncias de Objetos Voladores No Identificados (CRIDOVNI), making it the first in Latin America to have an office devoted to investigating this phenomenon. Its creation stemmed from the number of sighting reports received during the 1970s. Currently, with new technologies, the commission receives images and reports such as the one that recently occurred in Durazno.

Ufologists still remember one of the most widely known UFO events to have occurred in the country, known as the Argentinean Roswell. It was given that name by its similarities with the 1947 incident in New Mexico, U.S.A.

In the early hours of August 18, 1995, the domestic press reported the collision of an allegedly alien spacecraft in the department of Anta.

At the time, private pilot Antonio Galvagno witnessed a "confusing plot", as he would describe it, which kept the event from ever being solved. He said that he was having lunch on the day that the object fell and heard a loud explosion around 13:50 hours, which caused the entire community of Joaquin V. Gonzalez to shake. His initial sensation was one of fear, he told El Tribuno, thinking it was an earthquake, which cause the province to shake every so often. To his surprise, he took to the streets a few minutes later and saw a large column of smoke that made him think that an airplane or meteorite had crashed. The dense white trail was seen by dozens of local residence.

Curiosity motivated Galvagno to fly over the area in his two-seat aircraft. He concentrated on the area where the crash had apparently occurred, known as Serranía Colorada. The flyer saw a column of smoke which he described as "a cloud of soot with metallic particles. The search turned up nothing new. I found nothing."

Galvagno devoted the next two weeks to finding clues as to what could have happened, but without any positive results. According to his story, he met with a group from the Gendarmería Nacional (national police) who forbid him to continue the search, pursue the investigation or fly over the area.

However, the pilot decided to continue along with a group of locals motivated by curiosity. The news also reached the national television, print and radio media. It was brought up on programs such as the one by Susana Giménez and the late Jorge Guinzburg. Telenoche, Cronica and magazines like Gente dispatched correspondents to the area. There was never any official word as to what occurred and all that remained was a burned area measuring some 500 meters wide by five kilometers long.

The hypothesis by the pilot from Anta is that a craft - regardless of its origin - slid along the path. "Vegetation never grew in the site again and the area was closed off. Gendarmería and the Air Force invoked reasons of national security," Galvagno said. He and many other residents of Anta always believed it had been a UFO.

On November 27, 2009, a considerable part of the Department of Anta was left in the dark after midnight following a blackout which occurred at the same time dozens of witnesses reported seeing a UFO over the city of Joaquin V. Gonzalez.

In that instance, Daniel Barbosa, director of Radio Uno, told El Tribuno "that according to eyewitness accounts, the craft was gigantic, sausage-shaped and fully illuminated."

Citizens stated that the object flew over the power station for some minutes. "We were surprised that people from all over the city coincided in the description. Even stranger is that a blackout occurred."

The event occurred in 1995 at Serranía Colorada in the municipality of Joaquin V. Gonzalez. The details were never officially disclosed. Vegetation never again grew at the location and it remained closed off. The national police and the Argentinean Air Force invoked "reasons of national security."

The Argentinean Navy published a series of documents pertaining to a UFO sighting in Necochea in 1962. The documents present the eyewitness account of a truck driver pursued by a flying saucer in the vicinity of La Dulce.

CEFORA (Commission for the Study of the UFO Phenomenon in the Republic of Argentina) recently published an Argentinean Navy file disclosing the details of an important UFO sighting event that took place in our city some 55 years ago.

On August 29, 1962, Osman Alberto Simonini told his story of a UFO encounter in the vicinity of Km 28 of Route 86. Simonini was in his truck, driving out of La Dulce from the "Malabrigo" mink farm, property of Ernesto Arias. The case become widely known through an article in Ecos Diarios: the Navy commission launched its investigation through Capt. Omar Pagani and the files now form part of the private archive of researcher Roberto Banchs.

The incident took place at around 20:10 hours as Simonini drove at slow speed and noticed - to his left and following a parallel trajectory, at a distance of 3 meters and an elevation of 2 meters - an "artifact" resembling two plates linked by their widest sides, the color of gunmetal, having an approximate diameter of 5 meters.

The object projected red-and-blue beams similar to headlights from its lower section. The beams had a diameter of two meters, according to the description.

Simonini said that the artifact accompanied his truck for some 200 meters. As it did so, the driver noticed that the grass moved as well, proof of its low altitude and some sort of "air or energy" expelled from its lower section.

The object overtook the truck after the 200 hundred meters, racing ahead some 600 meters along the shoulder at low altitude. Upon reaching Km 26, it made a sharp right-angle turn into a seedbed. Simonini followed it and saw the object had stopped at an altitude lower than one meter. He stopped his truck and got up, and tried to approach the fence separating the field from the road, placing his hands on the wire only to find that the material was hot. He removed his hands, set them down again, only to find that [the wire] was even hotter. He moved some meters along, ascertaining that the wire there was completely cold.

Two minutes later, the object took up at high speed and vanished into the sky.

The witness stated his case to the border superintendent, the head of the federal police delegation, and Air Force officers in Mar del Plata with the support of notary Juan José La Terza, who stated that the following verbatim response was received when the incident was brought up [with these authorities]:

"The officers specializing in these studies told me there was nothing extraordinary about the event, as this kind of phenomenon was already accepted as real, and that the scientific world was waiting for the next stage: making contact with these artifacts."

During the course of a recent investigation carried out by members of the Asociacion Peruana de Ufologia (APU), contact was made with the new owners of strange archaeological relics of supposedly alien origin, who have been given the pseudonym "Guardians of Atok Marka" in

order to safeguard the identities of these people who live in the southern mountains of Peru, where they have over 2000 of these strange relics in their possession.

As will be recalled, in late 2016, two characters from the city of Cuzco - "Luis Quispe" or "Krawix" as well as Dante Rios, brought some of these remains to light, which added up to a dozen, and which included small mummified beings, skulls of extraterrestrial (sic) appearance, as well as giant hands with metallic incrustations. But in this case, the "Guardians of Atok Marka" have a much larger number of pieces, some of them similar to those held by the collectors in Cuzco, along with many other relics, each more intriguing than the previous one.

The "Guardians of Atok Marka" have over 2000 pieces in their possession, as was mentioned earlier. Among these are the mummified remains of entities ranging from 7 centimeters to 3 meters tall (3 inches to 9 feet). Upon detailed observation and contact by APU researchers, everything pointed to these objects being bones and soft tissue mummified with the passing of time and the conditions in which they were found.

When the existence of these remains in the hands of the collectors from Cuzco became known, all of these parts had been removed in a clandestine manner from a subterranean gallery located under the Ica Desert, specifically the Nazca Area, a province located to the south of the region.

According to the story offered by the "Guardians of Atok Marka", these remains were removed from a sacred site, protected by ancestral tutelary spirits for thousands of years, and which had never been located by the archaeological work being carried out at various locations of Nazca Province.

The Asociación Peruana de Ufología awaits the results of scientific tests that have already been commissioned by the "Guardians of Atok Marka" from a specialized organization with a view toward reaching a more satisfactory conclusion as to the origin and authenticity of these enigmatic relics. However, everything seems to suggest that we could be facing evidence of transcendental importance that would definitely change the course of humanity.

Dr. Anthony Choy, APU's director, and Lic. Rafael Mercado, e representatives of the Asociación Peruana de Ufologia, are the first Peruvian researchers to reach the guardians of this priceless and impressive collection of over 2000 pieces of seemingly non-human origin. The completion of the scientific tests being performed on them is crucial. It is also necessary to keep this subject from being distorted or manipulated by shadowy political interests.

The Asociación Peruana de Ufología shall continue to pursue this case.

Residents of Segovia and Remedios were bewildered around 9 o'clock in the evening by a phenomenon looking like a static red fireball in the middle of the dark sky.

This region of Northeastern Antioquía is rich not only in gold, but also in stories of witchcraft and sorcerers, so local residents would find nothing odd in having a "supernatural" force making itself visible.

Yen Milea Bran, who took photos and made cellphone recordings like many others, said that her family and neighbors took to the streets - in the La Cruzada district in Remedios - to see a sort of "very bright star" that hung in the heavens for some three minutes before disappearing,.

"It looked like a very large, shining star, lighting everything around it. But when recorded with the cellphone, it wasn't captured the way one's eyes perceived it. It looked like a fireball and in some images it displayed hypnotic circles," added the young woman.

Many hypotheses have been put forth about the phenomenon, which had never been seen in the skies of northeastern Antioquía.

"Many say it could be a UFO. Others say it could be a portal to another world. Others say it is surely a sign that the end is near and that we should repent, and others say that it has something to do with astronomy, that a star had surely exploded into a fireball," Yen Milenia explained.

The images have already been inspected in the Planetarium of Antioquía’s capital city, and have yet to ascertain its true nature. Angela Perez, the astronomical coordinator, noted that the possibilities range from unidentified flying objects, to an optic phenomenon with the lens or a fire balloon.

"Objects that cannot be identified are UFOs. However, the term is generally associated with spaceships and other things, but this cannot be said to be the answer until any other possibility has been discarded. Let's say that given the image's brightness, it could be one of those little balloons that get sent aloft with a candle inside," Pérez explained.

The fact of the matter is that some residents intend to be vigilant these days to see if the mysterious phenomenon stages a return.

Nearly 40 sightings of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) reported in Argentina during 2016 were explained away as some natural phenomenon by those who took the photo or witnessed the event

The Comisión de Estudio de Fenómenos Aeroespaciales (CEFAE) is an agency attached to the Argentinean Air Force. It has operated since 2011 in an office shared by monitors that follow satellites in real time, along with the debris of the Soviet space station Salyut 7, which crashed in the Province of Entre Rios in February 1991.

Ruben Lianza, who is in charge of CEFAE, explained that they provide "an open public service that enables citizens to clarify UFO sightings they may have recorded. “We employ all the tools at our disposal to identify each case as precisely as possible. It isn't that we're looking for alien life in the photographs."

With 40 years' experience in his favor, the specialist explained that "many people manage to take photos when they see something in the heavens that they can't explain, and others notice objects they did not expect to see, seemingly in flight, in photos they've taken. In such cases, many get in touch with us in the hope that we will identify these flying objects."

"There are thousands of other objects having a commonplace origin that cause people to become confused. For that reason, this commission employs the term 'aerospace phenomena' rather than the ill-used acronym UFO."

Lianza pointed out that "at least seven different kinds of explanations can be identified. Some are of an optical nature, being external or internal lens flares, particles or drops on the lens or sensor errors. Others are biological, birds or insects flying across the camera or creating optical illusions by having been taken at very low shutter speeds. There are also astronomical causes, such as the moon in broad daylight, for instance, or a star, planet or even the occasional shooting star, the sun reflecting off communication satellite mirrors, aircraft flying during daytime or nighttime hours or experimental balloons," he added.

For the moment, 40 per cent of the cases present in the report are attributable to biological causes, 37.1 per cent to causes linked to camera effects, while 5.7 per cent corresponds to astronomical causes and 2.9 per cent are attributable to satellites.

The commission makes use of three satellite and astronomical tracking software programs - Orbitron, Satflare and Stellarium - in analyzing cases. These record the exact orbit in real time with the possibility of delayed mode simulation for satellites and heavenly bodies. This allows reproduction of the conditions existing in the skies at the exact time and date at which the phenomenon was reported.

"When people see things at the edge of their visual field, the brain completes the missing information by resorting to the imagination. This can happen to a person with no aeronautical experience as well as to the most experienced pilot. It is for this reason that all the cases we receive must be accompanied perforce by photo, video or material evidence."

The recent death of Cuban leader Fidel Castro opens new doors to any UFO information that may have come about on the island. It has been learned that Cuba censored all matters related to the UFO phenomenon for over 37 years.

One of these cases involves the peasant Adolfo Zarate, who was pursued by a "wave" of UFO reports throughout the island of Cuba in October 1995, at which time the Cuban government was forced to admit the existence of UFO documentation in this regard.

This documentation acquires special meaning after Castro's death, particularly on a subject whose censorship was mandated on the island.

A UFO sighting was a cause for commotion among residents of the Alonso de Alvarado-Roque district, Provicne of Lamas. The object remained visible in the skies over this locality for several minutes, visible to a considerable number of townsfolk who had no idea what they were looking at.

identification, fearful of what may arise - and Miguel Palacios, visited the little town of Ronfe in the municipality of Sarria, Province of Lugo, to spend the weekend with their relatives. Both met to play cards at a tavern owned by the former's parents.

Around ten o'clock Saturday evening, Carlos noticed brightness "very similar to one he had seen at the TV retransmitting station at Paramo. I didn't pay much attention to it aside from an anecdotal remark to my family." We learned that one of Carlos's children wanted to go outside for a look, but his parents forbid it, as it was "foolish to do so, kid."

In the early hours of the morning, around 2 a.m., Carlos had to go outside the tavern and was stunned: in an empty field, some three hundred meters and at the other side of the river, he saw something he would have never imagined: a large, shell-shaped object, both on its upper and lower section, with numerous portholes around it. it gave the impression of having touched the ground, although no ground impressions were ever found. Standing close to this vehicle were three very strange humanoid entities, issuing a bright light "as if they were stuck in a block of ice and wore white coveralls." Most surprising yet was that they carried light sources in their hands which put forth a dim red light.

Carlos made sure he wasn't dreaming and called to those inside the place of business to come outside. Miguel Palacios was the first one out, and was able to see the brightness, the object and one of the occupants. He agrees with his friend on the description.

However, José Díaz López, a resident of Ronfe, who also went outside to see what was going on, was only able to see "brightness toward Sarria, but my eyes aren't too good, and I'd been discussing the need to visit the optometrist at that very moment."

According to experts in the subject of UFOs, the fact that the ship or object did not leave prints does not mean it wasn't there, as it wasn't necessary for the object to land.

The powerful light given off by the vessel was yellowish and lambent, illuminating nearly three hundred meters around. As far as noise was concerned, the witnesses were unable to provide details, suggesting that it was not very intense. "Since a river runs nearby, we were only able to hear a very muted whistling sound."

That Saturday afternoon, Carlos had covered 90 kilometers with his car and when he parked in front of the tavern it had been in perfect shape. Shortly after the sighting, he was unable to get the car started. "This car always turns over immediately - it's a brand new Ford Fiesta." Once the craft took off at high speed, he was able to start the car without further complications.

Carlos will not be gainsaid. "I saw it with my very own eyes. I know nothing about UFOs and have never read anything about them." He doesn't believe or disbelieve in the existence of creatures from another world. Doesn't know whether these were aliens or not. "It matters not at all to me. I can only tell you what I saw."

One of these cases -- on page 83 -- discusses a sighting by Fidel Castro before 1959, when the Cuban Revolution was up in the Sierra Maestra mountain range.

"I have seen one," Castro told Panamanian researcher Jose Luis Gil during an official event with Panamanian president Martín Torrijos.

"There we were, in the middle of the night," Fidel explained, "with our rifles on our knees. Then we suddenly saw a light darting among the stars. The light approached the group of commanders and poured over us like a bucket. It was round and enormous. The countryside and the mountains became illuminated as though it was daylight." This statement has caught the attention of the UFO community worldwide, given that it is a high credibility report from one of the century's most emblematic characters.

"Solo para Tus Ojos is the first installment of a trilogy. The second is written and the third is yet to be written, “says J.J. Benitez. "My intention was to collect a thousand cases from all over the world which caught my attention for some reason at the time, and which are unpublished events."

Benítez, who has sold almost nine million copies worldwide, added that "this book is an acknowledgement to all of the people who have followed me since 1972, forty-four years of uninterrupted research all over the world."

Juanjo, as he likes his friends to call him, is considered a living legend in UFO research and dissemination worldwide. An author who has gone around the world a hundred times, always after mysteries, enigmas and anomalous flying objects.

When asked about the conclusions of his research, he said:

"First and foremost is that the UFO phenomenon is true, the phenomenon is real, there is no doubt at all by those who have certain information at their disposal or have seen them. Second, is that "they" are not human. They do not originate from the Earth. They hail from multiple points of origin, galaxies, unknown dimensions to which we still lack access. Third, they have been here always. When we research history, cave art, mythology, we realize that this is indeed the case. They were already here at the dawn of time, and before that as well."

Solo para Tus Ojos also makes reference to cases that have taken place in Mexico, researched directly by Benitez in the vicinity of Mexico City's Mount Ajusco; Metepec in the State of Mexico and Guadalajara, Jalisco.

The purpose of CEFAE is to research the possible causes of unidentified flying object sightings, and publish a report with the conclusions of cases that have been solved.

On September 15, the head of the Aerospace Phenomena Study Commission (CEFAE), Commodore (R) Ruben Lianza, held a talk on the subject of "aerospace phenomena research methods" at the Centro Cultural de la Ciencia in Buenos Aires's Palermo district.

The purpose of CEFAE is to research the possible causes of unidentified flying object sightings, and publish a report with the conclusions of cases that have been solved.

During his presentation, Commodore Lianza described how he developed an interest in aerospace observations and mentioned that upon entering the Air Force, he devoted himself to unusual air traffic phenomena. He personally looked into cases involving ground marks, photographing a circle in the grass of a ranch and a "spot" on the Pajarillo Mountains.

According to the expert, Air Force files on the study of phenomena go back to 1968, and research fell under the Aeronautical Intelligence Service. Subsequently, in 1979, the National Space Investigation Commission was created with the aim of investing cases involving space junk. This commission operated until 1987. In 2011, the Air Force General High Command Created the Aerospace Phenomena Study Commission (CEFAE)

"CEFAE's problem consists in identifying an initially unidentified phenomenon. A case cannot be investigated if its two components are not present: the eyewitness report and the proof. This vital, because many ufologists have devoted their lives and millions of dollars to study cases only with eyewitness accounts and no evidence," he explained.

The importance of distinguishing between unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and identified flying objects (IFOs) was also stressed duirng the session. According to the official, identifying an object is due to the experience of the researchers who look into similar cases, along with the application of new computer tools.

"Research is absolutely necessary. The scientific method seeks to operate with relevant operation. If it is historic, it describes what it was; if it is descriptive, it interprets what it is, and if it is experimental, it describes what will be," explained Commodore Lianza.

He stated that research into the UFO phenomenon is descriptive, as it requires identifying the cause of the sighting.

Photos and videos go through an initial filter, in which the evidence is immediately identified as "an optical phenomenon, a camera effect, an astronomical, aeronautical, astronautical, meteorological or geological cause, or even a biological cause such as birds or insects, although there can also be unusual aerial phenomena that we are not aware of."

CEFAE's director explained that the method he recommends in finding an answer to these phenomena is composed of a hypothesis, initial causes, suspected causes and a conclusion. These reports are published at the official website of the Argentinean Air Force every year during the first week of December.

"Research is of critical importance, as it allows us to make contact with reality in order to understand it better," Commodore Lianza stated, adding: "Out of thousands of cases researched throughout the world, less than 5% remain unidentified."

"The research methodology causes us to make a double effort to ascertain not only what the UFO was, but also to find out what it wasn't. Therefore, a thorough knowledge of the identifiables, the IFOs, is essential to dismiss them," explained the officer, adding: "To be a good ufologist, you must first be a good ifologist."

He went on to add that human emotions, erroneous identification and optical illusions also come into play in the UFO phenomenon.

"To me, progress consists in going from UFO to IFO, even if it's an alien spaceship, because now it's identified with a name. What's regrettable about the past 69 years is that people use the acronym UFO as EFO (Extraordianry Flying Object). They use it as a synonym, when it isn't."

CEFAE has two areas of research that are pivot around intramural investigation (desk research) and extramural (field research). "Desk research involves a review of data, processing of eyewitness interviews and photographic analysis. This is what CEFAE does practically every day." In turn, the Commodore declared that several methods are employed in determining the cause of the object. In some cases, the distance between the object to the camera is computed, or its trajectory, or whether it is an internal optical reflection. Delivery of the original image, uncropped and without post-production is an indispensable requirement.

"The true challenge in observing space phenomena is to see what it was, whether or not it was extraterrestrial," remarks the expert. "We are obligated to give a sensible answer to the people. The idea is that CEFAE should not be perceived as a mere explainer, because explaining is the final stage of a process. It should be perceived as a clarifying organization."

Throughout the length of the presentation, he stressed the importance to make government officials and society at large aware of the need to create a contingency plan for cases involving falls of radioactive space junk.

Finally, he highlighted the importance of pursuing research into aerospace phenomena to facilitate its recognition and case analysis. In this regard, CEFAE is engaged in the inescapable task of training human resources, an initiative that is being achieved through Air Force courses under the Curso de Transcendencia del Poder Aeroespacial Nacional (CTPAN).

"To date, there exists no scientifically validated evidence that there are spaceships flying over our planet (...) but what we do have are the eyewitness accounts of UFOs, eyewitness reports that are real and deserve as factual and accurate a response as possible," concluded Commodore Lianza, adding: "Let us remember that when people see something at the far end of their visual field, the brain completes the information by resorting to imagination."

The chat ended with a round of questions in which those present indicated their interest in the subject, and went into detail about the work carried out by the Aerospace Phenomena Study Commission.

1991 seems so long ago that the details of what took place so long ago have been erased from the minds of most people, but this is surely not the case with the pilots of a Boeing 727 flight from Barcelona to Madrid. The Iberia airliner was at an altitude of 30,000

feet when it encountered some unexpected and unwelcome company. An object, described by the flight crew as a metallic balloon with a black emblem of some sort, kept pace with the airliner for approximately three minutes before pulling away with explosive force, vanishing into the horizon.

No less startling was the experience involving another airliner covering the Luanda (Angola) to Lisboa (Portugal). The crew of the TAAG (Angolan Airlines) craft was flying over the Sahara Desert when they became aware of an object shaped like "a chain of lights" whose size was far greater than that of their Boeing 707-200, one of five flown by the company. The object’s presence was confirmed by the on-board radar.

Things weren't much better elsewhere in Europe. In April 1991, an Alitalia airliner flying between Milan and London almost collided with an unidentified flying object over Kent. The brownish, "projectile-shaped" object sped past the plane to the consternation of the pilot and copilot. Subsequent investigation discarded the possibility that a stray missile, a weather balloon or space debris could have been involved. This near-miss with the unknown brought to mind the tragic end of another Italian airliner: at 10:00 pm on the night of July 27, 1980, a DC-9 flying between Bologna and Palermo crashed and killed 81 passengers aboard it what would become known as the Ustica Tragedy. At the time, some Italian publications attributed the collision to the DC-9's proximity to a UFO prior to crashing, and even that the airliner exploded in mid-air. The Italian military denied everything, insisting that it had merely been an accident.

According to the March 13, 1992 issue of Mexico's reputable El Universal newspaper, a sudden encounter with a UFO on March 6 of that year caused an airliner to become invisible.

The staff-written article provides no flight number, but the Aeroméxico airliner allegedly departed from Mexico City at 11:30 p.m. enroute to Monterrey. The pilot dimmed the cabin lights and passenger began falling asleep for the short flight, until they suddenly found themselves staring into the night sky and the bright stars in the heavens above...as if the entire fuselage had been lifted away. "We were flying in space, seeing the skies and stars without the barrier of cabin walls, which were still there and detectable to the touch, but completely invisible," said a witness to this sudden phenomenon. "We could even see the pilots in the cabin, at the controls of an aircraft that none of us could see, only touch."

More surprising is that panic did not spread throughout the aircraft: the startled passengers tried to make sense of the phenomenon until they suddenly became aware of a glowing object shaped like two "inverted bowls" stuck together flying alongside the aircraft.

The newspaper account states that the broadcast media reported the disappearance of the Aeroméxico airliner from radar screens in both Monterrey and Mexico City for ten minutes, along with the corresponding gap in communications.


Beginning with the “Stendek" affair in the 1960's - a case involving the disappearance of a British South American Airways plane in 1947, solved in recent years when the wreckage of the aircraft was found in an Andean valley - the UFO phenomenon has evinced considerable interest in commercial aviation and has even jeopardized the safety of some flights.

Chile's El Mercurio newspaper ran an interesting story in its Friday 17, 2001 edition showing that this fascination with our means of passenger transportation has not been relegated to old cases. At 11:30 a.m., the crew of LAN Chile Flight 560 established visual contact with a shining ovoid object "of considerable size" which prompted the pilot to report it to the National Air Traffic Control Center in Santiago de Chile. Although civilian radars reported that the contact was not on their screens, the 5th Air Brigade in Cerro Moreno (Antofagasta) and the regional airport of Calama in northern Chile managed to track it.

The event was confirmed by an airliner from the Avant carrier which had just taken off from the Calama airfield. Its crew was able to corroborate the information provided by LAN Chile 560, further noting that the object was motionless and within view up to ten minutes after the initial sighting.

The military radar facility at Cerro Moreno placed the object 40 miles over the town of Mejillones and at an altitude of 60,000 feet, thus ruling out the possibility that the strange object could have been a weather balloon -- the classic "culprit" in these cases-- since the Cerro Moreno facility sent its weather balloons aloft every day in the morning.


In January 1977, a Boeing 727 airliner belonging to Colombia's Avianca airline, piloted by Gustavo Ferreira, was approaching Ibagué, a community west of Bogotá, when the crew suddenly became aware of a strong white light. Believing that another airliner had strayed into their path, Captain Ferreira promptly radioed the air traffic controllers at Bogota International Airport. They assured him that they had picked up the intruder on their radar and were tracking it.

There was little that the Avianca crew could do as the intense light source made a beeline toward their jet. In a matter of seconds, the mysterious light had stopped in mid-air. Passengers and crew were treated to the sight of an unidentified flying object three times the size of the airliner they were in. Captain Ferreira flashed his landing lights at the vehicle, which responded by changing color from white to red. A second flash of the landing lights prompted the UFO to turn green. Three minutes later, the strange object sped off out of sight. The airport traffic controllers estimated the UFO's speed to be some 20,000 miles an hour at a 99-degree angle before vanishing off their screens.

A flurry of UFO sightings filled the summer months of 1977: on July 6 of that year, residents of the community of El Socorro witnessed the flight of a six UFO "squadron" across the night skies over their town. The UFOs flew fast and low over El Socorro amid heavy rainfall, giving off bursts of red and white light. On July 20, shortly after 4 p.m., attorney Carlos Rangel, who was looking out the window of a doctors' office in downtown Bogotá, saw five UFOs engaging in maneuvers over the city. He promptly drew the attention of the nurses in the office as well as that of people walking on the street. The number of onlookers staring skyward, including those who got out of their cars to take a better look, caused a traffic jam that lasted well over an hour. Bogotá's El Liberal newspaper ran a photo taken by a staff photographer, depicting one of the UFOs in question. The photograph was accompanied by eyewitness testimony.


A landmark book, Los OVNIS y la Aviación Mexicana - UFOs and Mexican Aviation- by Carlos Guzmán Rojas and Alfonso Salazar Mendoza (whose reports have been featured regularly on INEXPLICATA for a number of years) includes an abstract from an article in the La Prensa newspaper (June 21, 1992), disclosing UFO sightings made by airline pilots during their flights. A senior aviator, Captain Jorge Lara, openly admitted that he and others had shared UFO sightings over the course of the years, but that the accepted response among those in the cockpit was simply to exchange looks and say: "We didn't see a thing," being mindful of the negative and possibly career-ending repercussions that such an admission could entail.

Captain Lara went on to recall a sighting by Capt. López Betanzos, whose airliner was intercepted as it was on final approach to Acapulco, an event that caused a stir in aeronautical circles. Lara himself went on to discuss sightings of his own over the Sonora Desert. Heading back to Mexico City from Hermosillo, Sonora, some passengers informed the crew that they had witnessed "a luminous object descending from the sky and landing on a nearby mountain". Lara and his officers did their best to ascertain the true nature of the light, but the object flew off the mountain with the same burst of speed that had brought it there initially, vanishing from sight (another veteran pilot, Capt. Alex Franz, has spoken openly of his own sightings over Mexico's Altar Desert).

Seeing these objects had also become commonplace for flights out of Mexico City to Europe over the Atlantic Ocean (the Mexico-Miami-Madrid route). Captain Lara described situations in which Aeroméxico DC-8s and DC-10s had seen luminous objects traveling at prodigious speeds and which could not be classified as either satellites or meteors. Nervous communication between air traffic controllers and pilots had also been overheard, singling out a particular case in which the pilot of a Braniff airliner advised the Idlewild Tower at John F. Kennedy Airport that a huge fireball was flying in a direction opposite to that of the jet, coming very close but without suffering any harm.

A memorable scene in Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind shows the moment when an air traffic controller asks two airliner captains who have just reported a UFO encounter if they wish to file a formal report--both men refuse, one of them saying unequivocally, "I don't want to report one of those!"

One can well imagine the penalties that a professional responsible for safety of hundreds of passengers and a multi-million dollar aircraft might face if he or she admits to seeing "flying saucers". Fortunately the silence imposed on airliner crews is now being broken as many pilots retire and no longer face being grounded for good. Juan Lorenzo Torres is one of them.

Torres, who retired from the Spanish carrier Iberia at the age of 65, had an illustrious career that included forty years of flying military and civilian aircraft. Born in Madrid and the son of an Air Force general, Torres served in the military with Spain's King Juan Carlos and is presently the director of an aviation academy. "The day I saw a UFO from my aircraft," he told interviewer Pedro Madueño, "I wasn't able to sleep, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it all this time."

But why would a man with such an illustrious background and career wish to enter the UFO fray? "I think many people would like to know that my crew and I saw something that no one has been able to explain to this very day."

On the fourth of November, 1968, at 18:23 hours, Torres was flying a Caravelle 6-R along the London to Alicante route (Iberia Flight 249). This routine flight proceeded normally until the Barcelona tower ordered the aircraft to descend from an altitude of thirty one thousand feet to twenty eight thousand feet, ostensibly to compensate for the transit of another aircraft on the same corridor. "Well, I had already ordered dinner and the trays were in the cabin," reminisces Captain Torres, "but at that altitude we were shaving the clouds, which produce a slight though uncomfortable turbulence. Having one's dinner that way was thoroughly disagreeable. I asked my co pilot to visually monitor if the opposing traffic could be seen, in order that we could return to our proper level to have a peaceful dinner."

Within seconds, the pilot said that the incoming aircraft was in sight, but it wasn't another airliner: instead, the Caravelle's crew saw a flash of light heading toward them at full speed and on a collision course.

"We dumped the trays and our jaws dropped, since that blinding light was nothing we'd seen before." he explained. "We called the stewardess to witness the thing. None of us knew what it could be."

The petrified crew witnessed how the object stayed some ten meters away from the Caravelle's nose cone, moving up and down and sideways, but always returning to its position in front of the aircraft. Torres made an effort to contact the object in English and Spanish with no success; contacting the Barcelona tower was fruitless, since area was beyond its radar coverage. The next thing he did was to initiate an emergency broadcast "on the 121.5 channel, so that all nearby aircraft could communicate with us."

Torres recalls turning on all of the aircraft's lights in an effort to begin a rudimentary form of communication with the object. "I told it in Spanish: "On and off twice means no, on and
off once means yes." When asked by the interviewer if there had been any success, he replied that "there had been logic" in the intruder's movements.

"That night we all slept poorly, as my crew told me the next day. We all made a pact of silence, but lieutenant colonel Abreu of the Barcelona tower, called me when I landed at El Prat and told me that the radar coverage for eastern Spain had recorded those "UFOs". I asked for a copy of these records and he gave me one." This valuable bit of evidence would be lost later on in a series of events.

"Four months later, another Caravelle piloted by commander Ordovas had another sighting in the area, flying with the same flight engineer, Jose Cuenca! The news made it into the media because one of the flight attendants had a boyfriend who was a journalist. Journalists began calling and four months later Lt. Col Ugarte and a lawyer showed up and the copy was confiscated. After reporting the sighting, Lt. Col Ugarte concluded that what the co pilot, engineer, flight attendant and I had seen was in fact Venus! Venus was
stuck to my plane's nose, and I never realized it!"

Captain Torres' remarks go to show that unidentified flying objects have always shown an interest for our passenger airliners, and some have humorously suggested that the smaller unidentified objects may be attracted to jumbo jets like baby whales to surface ships in a misguided imprinting event. Nor was Captain Torres experience one-of-a-kind.

On January 6, 1995 a Boeing 737 carrying sixty passengers and piloted by Captain Roger Wills and flying between the northern Italian city of Milan and Manchester had a mid-air encounter with the unknown that almost ended in disaster. At 06:48 hours, as the airliner began its final descent into the Manchester area, it came across a triangular object with small white lights along its sides and a black band surrounding it.

Wills and his copilot, Mark Stuart, confirmed that according to the control tower they were the only object in the air at the time. Yet the unidentified would not make way for the swiftly oncoming airliner. A perilous nosedive was all that saved the 737 from a certain collision.

The flight crew would later state that UFO appeared not to have the slightest intention of deviating from its course, and eventually flew under the airliner's starboard wing.

Few cases in Spanish ufology have achieved the level of angry pro and con discourse that characterizes the so-called Manises Incident, in which a Mirage F-1 fighter pursued a UFO for an extended period of time with full authorization from ground control. The military component of the case often overshadows the civilian aspect, which is hair-raising enough, as we shall see.

On November 11, 1979, Captain Javier Lerdo de Tejada, a senior pilot with eight thousand hours of flight time under his belt, was flying a Super Caravelle belonging to the TAE airline on a flight between the Austrian city of Salzburg and the Canary Islands, where over a hundred passengers hoped to spend a sunny vacation. After having been aloft for less than half an hour, the Super Caravelle began to pick up an odd distress call on the emergency band, being informed by ground control that it emanated from a point 40 miles northwest of the coastal city of Valencia. Captain Tejada remarked that it was as if the party sending out the distress signal had no knowledge whatsoever of Morse code.

At 23:47 hours, flight engineer Francisco Rodriguez reported the presence of a pair of red lights at a lower elevation and to the left of the airliner. The Barcelona control tower insisted that their flight was alone in the night sky and that no other traffic was in the area.

The object began closing in on the Super Caravelle, causing consternation among the crew, since it was flying within less than the 10 mile safety range. The lights, spanning a diameter of two hundred meters, practically made a bee line for the airliner, coming within half a mile of its wing. Certain that a collision was imminent at this point, Tejada broke his flight plan and began an emergency descent to the Manises airport outside of Valencia; the pursuit ended only when the approach maneuvers were initiated. “This was the first time,” writes Spanish ufologist Javier García Blanco, “that a passenger airliner was forced to change it flight plan in order to avoid a collision.”

That pilots have taken an interest in these matters should come as no surprise. Dr. Rafael Lara Palmeros wrote the following in connection with the unusual UFO activity taking place over Veracruz, Mexico in 1995:“Onlookers at Lencero Airport near Jalapa witnessed a strange formation of UFOs which flew by the sun for a number of hours on October 31.

“They were apparently filmed by a cameraman from Universidad Veracruzana. In the words of the airport personnel, the phenomenon occurred during three successive days; pilots testified that the objects were oval in shape and made abrupt turns that cannot be made by an airplane. Carlos Kauffman, senior pilot at Lencero, added that he had not witnessed the phenomenon himself, but had heard comments about it among the personnel of his facility. The video taken by the U.V. cameraman was forwarded to Jaime Maussán's Copérnico-Galileo Group for public attention (the cameraman, Bernabé Castillo, has a B.A. in Visual Communications and works as a cameraman for the Audiovisual Dept. at the University.

“During an interview on November 3, Kauffman pointed out that "it's a hobby among airline pilots and ground personnel to look at a UFO that remains stationary at 12,000 feet above the runway." He added that a woman form Torre Animas (near Lencero) called the airport nearly 40 times to advise them that she could see a "V" shaped formation of objects, which remained stationary for a long time. However, no information was ever given to the caller since the nature of the phenomenon was never determined. Both Kauffman and Sánchez Camerino, another pilot, considered themselves "fans of this sort of event."


As new information begins to pour out of the former Soviet Union, more cases can be added to the list of commercial planes interfered with by UFOs. The March, 1993 issue of Aura magazine, published by mathematician Alexandr Avshamulov, contains a never-seen-before transcript of a radio exchange between civilian pilots and flight controllers in the Black Sea resort of Sochi on July 26, 1989. The crews of three separate flights reported seeing two objects "one oblong, the other cylindrical" some 50 miles away from their positions. Said transcript was one of a number of documents released by the KGB to independent UFO periodicals. The cache of information included three photos of a commercial Ilyushin 96/300 jet on a runway, shadowed by "unknown objects" resembling fireballs. "A thorough examination [has] established the authenticity of the prints," reads the Aura caption.

The reasons for this fascination that the phenomenon holds for our commercial carriers isn't clear, but there is speculation aplenty. If extraterrestrial, what better opportunity for alien zoologists to obtain a fair sampling of human variety than by the capture of an aircraft? To the alien military specialist, a state-of-the-art airliner would provide a quick assessment of our civilization's technological capability. If UFOs are creatures of our planet's upper atmosphere, as has been suggested by many authors since the '70's, perhaps their maneuvers could be interpreted as resembling the playful antics of dolphins with our own sea vessels.

On certain occasions, however, the phenomenon has demonstrated a slightly paranormal, plastic quality, as seen in the 1985 case which involved an Aeroflot airline on its way from the Caucasus to the Baltic Sea: the UFO tailed the passenger jet for 800 miles, changing its geometry several times as it flew--from a cone to a double cone, and finally into a mammoth needle-nosed aircraft -- a harmless enough activity, but nevertheless distressing to the passengers and crew.
